Just Say No to Too Much Stuff

Stuff. For many of us it's worse than any four-letter word. That's because "stuff" can weigh you down and hold you back, says Gail Blanke, author of Throw Out Fifty Things. And, in the end, much of what we accumulate in life isn't all that important. As Marilyn Bohn, author of Go Organize!, points out, "No one ever says, 'I wish I'd kept more stuff.'"

Still, getting rid of our discards can be a challenge. Carla Eskelsen, a mom in Farmington, Utah, admits she had trouble letting go of stuff until she figured out how to manage her "pioneer DNA." Once she figured out that donating and recycling "honored" her pioneer ancestors, she found it much easier. "It's about sharing and blessing others instead of keeping it all for yourself," she says. Here's how you can share and bless others with all of your stuff-and end up with a cleaner, more peaceful

Ready for a new year and a new you? It's as easy as these 11 Motherboard Mom-tested tips.

      By Leslie Goldman

      1. Cut Yourself Some Slack

That's the resolution New York City-based writer and mom to 7-year-old twin girls Stephanie Dolgoff makes every year-and sometimes manages to keep. "Most of my angst, whether it's about motherhood, the life/family balance thing, or work, has to do with holding myself to too-high expectations and then falling short," she says. Lowering her standards in a healthy way-like not stressing over a less-than-perfect afternoon at the museum-allows her to actually get things done without driving herself nutty.

It's a good goal, says New York psychologist Susan Bartell, Ph.D.: "Guilt that you're not doing something perfectly or as well as the next mom, or that you're not devoting enough time or effort to home, kids, or work will not make you feel better." Let it go, knowing you're doing the best you can for your family and yourself. If that means serving

Holiday snacks can be your best friend or your worst enemy. Here's how to indulge in delicious party appetizers -- and still save calories for dessert.

      By Marie Elizabeth Oliver

      Less Is More

Take a lesson from the French and trade a tableful of heavy snacks for a more refined selection of what are known as amuse-bouche. The name for these flavor-packed bites literally translates to "amuse the mouth." Of course, the theory here is that less is more.

"My advice is to rethink the snack course," says Joy Manning, who shares her passion for food and smart approach to mindful eating on her blog, OysterEvangelist.com. "Don't serve anything before a holiday meal that's not special, and go for something people will remember." (Read: No potato chips.) Manning suggests appetizers that are light but luxurious, such as jumbo wild-shrimp cocktail with a homemade relish, high-quality smoked salmon with red onions and créme fraiche on pumpernickel squares, or just-shucked oysters on

Make your holidays happier and healthier (and calmer) with these 15 sneaky strategies. Instant peace!

      By Dorothy Foltz-Gray

      Skip the family tug-of-war

You want to be thankful. Really. But, sometimes the stress of the holiday catches up with you. Instead of succumbing to that third piece of pie for solace, try these tips for a healthier, happier way to bless-and save-the day.

For starters, refuse to argue about whose family-his or yours-gets you this year. Simply make a two-year plan-alternating households or meals-tell everyone, stick with it, and focus on what matters. "Make spending some time with each family during the holiday the goal, not seeing who gets you for the main event," says family therapist Carleton Kendrick, Ed.M., LCSW, co-author of Take Out Your Nose Ring, Honey, We're Going to Grandma's.

You don't need a pricey gym membership to lose weight and build strength. All it takes is 3 pieces of equipment (a fitness ball, resistance bands and an exercise mat) and this workout program designed by Gregory Florez, a spokesperson for the American Council on Exercise and CEO of personal coaching company www.FitAdvisor.com. To get the most bang for your buck, do 2 sets of the moves 3 days a week, with at least 1 rest day in between. You'll see results in 4 to 6 weeks.

      Fitness Ball Move: Modified Superman

Tones: Abs, back, shoulders, buttocks, and hamstrings

One Set: 15 to 20 repetitions

Starting Position: Lie facedown on the ball so that it's between your chest and your belly. Your arms should hang down perpendicular to the floor. Your legs should be shoulder-width apart, stretched out diagonally, with your toes touching the floor to keep your body stable.

One Rep: Lift and extend your left arm out in front of you so it's parallel to the floor-and at the same time

      The Sleek Fishtail

A braid like Dianna Agron's is the perfect way to stay-and look-cool on hot summer days. Keep it sleek and polished to go seamlessly from poolside to nighttime party.

How to do it: Blow-dry hair using fingers until it's three-quarters of the way dry, then work in mousse from root to end. Try TRESemmé Naturals Lightweight mousse, $4.50. Use a paddle brush to finish blow-drying and smoothing strands. Make a deep side part and swoop the rest of your hair over to the opposite side, slightly behind your ear. "If you're doing it yourself, you may want to secure into a low pony to hold in place, then undo at the end," says NYC stylist Jay Palaniuk. To start the fishtail braid, divide hair into two sections. Work your way down by taking a thin piece from the
