The Soapbox: Actually, Katie Roiphe, Feminists Are Not Perplexed About Submissive Sex
Bondage/dominance/sadomasochism (BDSM) erotica novel Fifty Shades Of Grey has swept the nation, landing itself on many a Kindle and launching a feeding frenzy for the movie rights. More digital ink has been spilled on What Does This All Mean? for women and our sexual desires than will ever be spilled on the people killed by a tornado in Oklahoma this weekend. So naturally, Newsweek/The Daily Beast hired Katie Roiphe, who both loathes contemporary feminism and does not understand BDSM in the slightest, to write about it. What's initially galling about Katie Roiphe's lack of understanding is her broad brush strokes on BDSM, which frame the piece inaccurately from the outset. First of all, she doesn't even mention male sexual fantasies of submission. Second of all, she conflates spanking and undefined submissive behavior with rape fantasies/forced sex, as if all three are just interchangeable in the grab bag of kinky sex. Plenty of individuals enjoy a spanking, either giving or receiving

The Soapbox: Actually, Katie Roiphe, Feminists Are Not Perplexed About Submissive Sex
By The Frisky | Love + Sex – Tue, Apr 17, 2012 12:38 PM EDTI'm fully convinced that Michael Lohan's headline-making domestic violence arrest yesterday was copied straight out of Mel Gibson's playbook. Of course, Mel's famed blowouts were uniquely terrible because some of them were directed towards the teenage son of ex-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva. Last month, Mel paid $100,000 to Oksana's 14-year-old for the guarantee that he wouldn't sue the once-respected actor for reportedly "terrorizing" him during altercations with his mother. That's low, even for Mel Gibson. Additionally, his own toddler daughter with Grigorieva bore witness to a number of her father's detonations.
It's hard to top this sh**ty parenting, but surprise, surprise, more than a few celebs come come! After the jump, six more celebrities who I definitely wouldn't want for a dad.

I came late to appreciating chivalry. For most of my life, chivalry made me uncomfortable. I've always identified as a feminist and Third Wave feminism generally is pretty frosty towards traditional gender roles. But more so than being a feminist, I felt the same way a lot of modern women (who may or may not identify as feminists) do in that I felt pride of my ability to take care of myself better than my mother can take care of herself. I pay my own bills, I know how to change a tire on a car, I buy my own technology, etc. etc.

However, as I grew older and had more life experiences and more serious relationships, I realized that I liked being treated chivalrously. Some of it is that I like the outward displays of both respect and affection; as a person whose job entails the reading of many nasty Internet comments about my beliefs/life choices/appearance, those little loving moments are golden.

By The Frisky | Fashion – Wed, Oct 19, 2011 8:43 PM EDT"Making fun of the fat girl" is the oldest and most cliché gag in TV history. And when Tatyana Ali's show "Love That Girl" made fun of a fat girl in a recent episode, they were downright cruel. Instead of using a stock image or say, not mocking a plus-sized woman's body at all, the show used an image of a real, plus-size woman.
And she just happened to be my friend, the actress, comedian and gorgeous plus-size woman Erica Watson.

My first bourbon experience was at a dark bar in New Orleans, where I ordered "bourbon, on the rocks" because I thought it would make me sound cool. I took one sip and started retching, so the bartender put a sympathetic shot of cola in my glass. "Try it like this," he said, and I did, and started coughing and retching again. "Maybe a little more…" he said, and we continued on like this until finally he just gave me a Coke on the rocks. My dreams of being cool died that day, but now that I'm older and wiser I'd like to try this whole bourbon thing again.
I asked my friends Patrick and Rachel, who run ThereWillBeBourbon.net, to compile a list of ways to enjoy this classic spirit. Whether you're a seasoned sipper or a bourbon newbie like me, there's sure to be a suggestion for you (the bourbon chocolate chip cookies sound like just my style). By The Frisky | Love + Sex – Fri, Sep 30, 2011 7:00 PM EDTKelly Clarkson is a smartie when it comes to matters of the heart. I mean, she did sing "Since U Been Gone." But now she has more wisdom to pass on to us. "[Dating is] like an 'American Idol' audition," she said in a recent interview. "The worst ones are the most confident … And the same thing goes for my dating life. The worst guys are the most confident with me." Everyone loves an unexpected analogy, right? Kelly's words have inspired me to round up other celebrities who've made great analogies about love, dating, and relationships.

Taylor Armstrong Talks In Detail About Being Abused
By The Frisky | Love + Sex – Thu, Sep 22, 2011 8:04 PM EDT
After the suicide of her estranged husband, Russell Armstrong, Taylor Armstrong of "The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills" largely laid low. Then last week, a photo of Taylor with a black eye surfaced-apparently, she gave the evidence of the fact that she was abused by Russell to "Entertainment Tonight." Last night, the show aired its segment with Taylor. In it, she talks in detail about being beaten. "The first time he ever really harmed me physically, I was pregnant with Kennedy and he grabbed me by the throat and held me up against a wall. Nothing had really happened to set him off, so I saw his ability to go from zero to 60 that quickly," Taylor explained. "I had made pizza for his children before he got home from work, and he came into the master bedroom and grabbed me by the neck and shoved me against the wall and he said, `If you ever make my children a pizza without a vegetable again, I'll kill you.'"
How terrifying.
Taylor explains that she lived in a state of fear
