How Training for a 5K is Just Like Our MarriageMy wife and I just completed a 5K together. It was a great experience and a great accomplishment. It was my 2 nd official 5K and her 1 st 5K ever. About a week after the run, I reflected on our training and the completion of the run. I came to the realization that training for a 5k is just like our marriage.
We didn't even know we would be running in the 5K until 4.5 weeks before the actual run. We were not prepared at all, and we had only 4.5 weeks to train. I actually felt I was in the worst shape of my life, due to my lack of activity and terrible eating habits I'd been practicing recently. But off we went! The beginning
The beginning of our marriage, we were clueless and didn't have any idea what we were getting into. In theory, training for a 5K didn't seem to difficult.

It's a jungle out there in the world of dating. Men prey on women, growling like kings to catch our attention. They court us. And we cave when they flash their dazzling and hypnotizing smiles. Or in a peacocks case, their fancy feathers. Soon we are enamored. And then, all of a sudden, they stop calling. This happened to me recently. I began dating a man that I met last year. We bumped into each other and sparks flew. He was so into me. He called every day and texted me throughout the day. He wanted to see me all the time. And then - poof! He was gone like Puff the Magic Dragon. Only this guy doesn't live by the sea. This just doesn't happen to me. Many single women experience this disappearing act. I've spoken to so many lovely ladies who tell me great things about a man they're dating one minute, and the next they say, "He went M.I.A." Well, we're not taking it anymore, Mr. Missing in Action! I recently met a friend so we could go running together. We pushed our babies around the local park and dissected the complexities of life and the myth of "having it all." We both do our best to balance our kids and our work, to support our husbands and our communities, to take time to enjoy friendships and to nurture ourselves. It's hard to do. But it is so much easier to find the energy to put into all those roles if we make the choice - every day - to be healthy. Whether that means an early morning run with a friend or making dinner at home instead of heading through the drive-thru, there are lots of little things we can do every day that can give us the strength to be all that we need to be. The celebrations for the 12th annual National Women's Health and Fitness Day on September 25 encouraged women to take control of their health so they can do just that. All over the country there were health and fitness events that were geared toward this year's theme of "Think Healthy, EatRead More »from She Works Hard for Her Body: 7 Inspiring Ways for Women to Take Control of Their Health

There is a special place in hell for people who abuse the most vulnerable of our children, those with special needs.
I know you don't want to read this. And when I post this story to my Facebook page, there will be comments like "I can't read this. I can't handle it."
God knows I don't want to write it. I don't want to write these posts about abuse of children in schools, but I have to. Because it is happening, and people need to know it. And people need to know that this is a real fear that parents of special needs kids in particular live with every day.

Walking Dead fans are chomping at the bit (gross) waiting for this month's premiere on October 13th. It's the kind of show you need a break from for a while because of the violent and gruesome intensity of it, but the summer hiatus is just about the right amount of time to get over any lingering PTSD from last season's Walking Dead finale. We're ready for more. With an influx of people at the prison, the close-knit community dynamic will be changing big time. I can't wait to see how it plays out for Rick and his crew. I miss Rick. I need to see Daryl. I'm curious whether Carl has had a growth spurt. I want. I need. These 7 radical prints inspired by The Walking Dead are just the ticket. Take a look!
