Conor Fitzpatrick, who grew up eating fresh from the garden in his native Ireland, didn't let city life dissuade him from turning his Los Angeles backyard into his own private farmers' market. "There's no better fruits and vegetables than from your own garden," Conor says. Grilled Artichokes
These artichokes can be cleaned and blanched ahead, then tossed on the grill next to your favorite summer chicken or rib recipe.
Recipe:
Ingredients- 6 artichokes
- 1 tablespoon plus 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 lemon
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 3 tablespoons olive oil
- 2 tablespoons lemon juice
- 1/4 teaspoon pepper
Slice tops off artichokes, pull off small leaves, trim stems, and snip off thorny tips. In a large pot, bring 1 to 2 inches of water to a boil. Add 1 tablespoon salt, the juice of 1 lemon, and artichokes; cover and steam until artichoke bottoms pierce easily, 20 to 40 minutes. Drain artichokes. When cool enough to handle, cut each in half lengthwise and scrape out fuzzy center. In a bowl, combine garlic, olive oil, 2 tablespoons lemon juice, 1/2 teaspoon salt, and pepper. Strawberry-Rhubarb Pie
Get all the flaky-juicy deliciousness of strawberry pie with this fuss-free single-crust galette.
Recipe:
Yield: Makes 8 to 10 servings
Ingredients
- About 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
- About 3/4 cup sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 3/4 cup (3/8 lb.) butter or margarine
- 2 cups sliced strawberries (1/2 in. thick)
- 2 cups sliced rhubarb (1/2 in. thick; about 2/3 lb.)
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cardamom
- In a food processor or a bowl, combine 2 cups flour, 1/4 cup sugar, and salt. Cut all but 2 teaspoons butter into small pieces and add to flour mixture. Whirl or rub in with your fingers until fine crumbs form. Add 1/4 cup water; whirl or stir with a fork just until dough holds together. Pat into a smooth 5-inch round. Wrap airtight and freeze until slightly firm, about 15 minutes.
