    • The Best (and Worst!) Beauty Trends of 2010

The new year is a therapeutic time. It's a time when we get to look back at the previous year's mistakes, learn from them, and go forth in order to make a (mostly half-hearted) attempt at improving ourselves for the year to come. (See the 10 health and beauty resolutions real women are making for 2011.)

To help you have a beautiful 2011, I have rounded up the most popular hairstyles, makeup looks and nail trends from the past year in order to help you navigate which to keep and which to ditch come January 1st. These are some of the best and worst beauty trends of 2010:

      Best: Ballerina buns

Anna Pavlova would be proud as this elegant hairstyle graced both the runways and red carpets alike. It's any easy style that quickly adds glamor to any look on or off the Swan Lake stage … enough ballet references for you? … yeah us too, keep the look for next year and let's move on.

      Best/Worst: Nail art

This one's a toss up, but we have finally come to an executive

    • Totally Unnecessary Skin Care Products

I don't know about you, but I feel vulnerable walking the aisles of CVS or perusing the beauty counters at Macy's. With over 10,000 skin care companies trying to convince me that I need a different cream for every body part and that if I have a wrinkle here, or a stretch mark there then I am doomed to some sort of ugly-hell (friends stop calling, I get fired and my boyfriend cheats on me), it's easy to feel like a sitting duck. So how can I know what I actually need and which skin care products are totally useless?

To help us weed through the hype, I went to dermatologist Dr. Harold Lancer to figure out which skin care products (general product types, not necessarily specific ones) for our face or body are totally pointless.

Here are some of the 9 unnecessary products he says can be left on the shelf:

      1. Separate creams for the face, neck and chest

The skin care products you use on your face work for your neck and décolleté as well, says Lancer. So if

    • How to Get Kissed at a Holiday Party -- No Mistletoe Required

      My Holiday Party List:

      • Christmas tree bigger than my neighbors': Check.
      • Flowy top that will forgive my lack of control in buffet-table situations: Check.
      • Smokin' heels that will make up for my less-than-sexy flowy top: Check.
      • Great presents for all my friends thanks to this nifty gift guide that covers everyone on the list: Check.
      • Flawless hair and makeup that will get me smooched by the hot coworker I probably should not have invited: Check.

… Sorry if that last item was a bit too honest, but let's face it, the best way to keep warm this holiday season is to nuzzle up to your loved one. And the best way to do that is by looking hot, duh.

That's why I went to celebrity hairstylist Peter Lamas to get ideas for the and New York City-based makeup artist and founder of Cheek to Chic Raychel Wade for the sexiest makeup looks. Below is the no-fail makeup and hair combo I picked to look my holiday best.

    • Kate Middleton's Beauty Secrets -- Revealed

Crikey! I've finally figured it out.

Ever since Prince William and Kate Middleton announced their royal engagement, I have been strangely fascinated with Kate the Great. Although it could be because the 7-year-old in me fantasizes about what it would be like to be a Princess (Disney is partly to blame for this cuddly-forest-creatures-can-be-your-BFFs and happily-ever-afters-actually-exist obsession -- I'm convinced).

My obsession may also stem from the fact that I get sucked into media hype and therefore "tricked" into caring. Once I care, I then brilliantly reserve the right to judge Kate Middleton's cocktail of choice, which allegedly is "the 'crack baby,' a fresh passion fruit mix with vodka and champagne," according to "Radar." Then I get to cheekily suggest to readers that she better watch this Makeup Tricks To Hide a Hangover Video before the big day. Fun, right?

My fascination, I think, is really due to the fact that she is breathtakingly gorgeous. Middleton's

    • Eye Firming Products That Actually Work

I just had a birthday last month, which officially marks the end of a decade. Upon looking in the mirror, I swear I have aged in the last year. I don't smoke and I wear sunscreen on my face every day (check out the best facial sunscreens), yet my smile lines and crow's feet seem more pronounced than I remember, so perhaps the culprit is stress and the good ol' passage of time.

Now the idea of "anti-aging" skin care products is piquing my interest more than ever before. I think that I'm going to pick a gel, serum or cream from this roundup of the best eye firming products and start using it -- stat! See the glowing reviews from TotalBeauty.com readers:

No. 9: Clinique Anti-Gravity Firming Eye Lift Cream, $34.50

One woman says this is "Botox in a bottle without injections." She "started using this cream a long time ago and haven't gotten any additional wrinkles. It also moisturizes the area around my eyes really well. And did I mention that it truly lifts and

    • The Best and Worst Dry Shampoos

Every week I embark on a dirty hair throwdown with myself where I try to go as long as I can without washing it. And for the most part, unless I have a super sweaty workout (which has not been happening lately) or an event to go to (ditto), I top out at about two times a week. And, while you might be thinking that I must be into that greasy, "grunge" look, I'd be willing to bet that if you saw me right now, you wouldn't be able to tell that I'm on day five without a proper shampoo. That's right. After nearly an entire week, my hair doesn't look one bit greasy and I owe it all to dry shampoo. (Speaking of hair care ... enter The Hair Dare Sweepstakes for your chance to win a $500 grand prize package of hair tools and products from John Frieda.)

Jealous? Check out this round up of the best and worst dry shampoos to find your hair's new best friend. Because, honestly, who wants to take the time to wash and dry their hair every day (especially when it's cold outside)?

    • The Best Classic Beauty Products

Fine wines get more expensive and appreciated the longer they sit collecting dust on your shelf. Cheese gets praise for mold. Classic cars are worth more than anyone in their right mind would have ever paid for them when they were new. So, what's the trend here? Well, unlike people and celebrities, aged products are valued. And beauty products are no exception. Any product that women continue to love and pass on to their daughter's daughter because they work so darn well, should be appreciated, celebrated and well, on this list of the 14 best classic beauty products.

These products have been around for ages and have become staples in our makeup bags and bathroom cabinets. And since you, like us, tend to get a little nostalgic when it comes to beauty products -- whether you use them religiously or run back to them with open arms when your newer beauty products don't deliver -- we rounded up a list of the ones our readers say are the best. Here are six of the 14:

    • Our Editors' Favorite Foundations

Around the holidays, lists are absolutely necessary to make sure you don't forget everyone on your "must gift" list (see the best beauty products to gift here). Remember the uproar it caused when you forget ol' mom-in-law's assorted candied fruit basket? Nightmare -- and she still hasn't forgiven you. The point is, lists can be fun. Especially when they are "favorite" lists … like Oprah's. Unfortunately we won't be giving you any of the foundations at the end of this article like O would, maybe next year … if you're good. Anywho, I decided to make a list of the 12 foundations our editors think are the best.

I made the list. I checked it twice. Here are five of the foundations that made it:

L'Oreal Paris Visible Lift Serum Absolute, $12.50

Tester: Sarah Carrillo, Senior Associate Editor

      Rating: 8

What she thought: "While I can't speak to the anti-aging benefits (I haven't tried it long enough to really see an effect), I do love this foundation. The liquid formula

    • Best Beauty Products for Mommies-to-Be

I kid you not, last month in about one week's time, four of my friends told me they were pregnant. Two of them are having their second child, but for the other two, who are having their first baby, I can imagine that they're being smothered with everyone's opinions about what they should and shouldn't do while preggers (here are 8 no-nos to follow when you're preg-o). But instead of being the bearer of bad gestational news, I'm going to share with you the best beauty products for moms-to-be. The following products are not only safe for moms-to-be, but will also help with pregnancy-related woes like stretch marks and acne, so say TotalBeauty.com readers anyway. Check 'em out …
