    • How to Make Top Pastry Chefs' Desserts at Home

Recreate this berry dessert in your own kitchen

On Monday June 3rd, Dessert Professional Magazine hosted a gala to honor 2013's Top 10 Pastry Chefs in America, and I was lucky enough to snatch a spot on the guest list. The event was held at The Institute of Culinary Education in New York City. Each of the 10 chefs who were honored whipped up desserts at the party to feed the hungry guests. Noticeable trends in the award-winning desserts were the mix of sweet and savory, the use of seasonal produce, and the much-adored chocolate and peanut butter combo. Below are quick and simple ways for you to recreate these top chefs' desserts in your kitchen.

    • New Tricks to Handle Every Kind of Stress

Whatever pushes your buttons, disarm your tension with these targeted strategies.

Remember when summertime meant the livin' was easy? Yeah, neither does anyone else. Stress is a year-round reality, though the source may vary. "For some women, it's family issues, while others can't escape the pressures that work puts on their lives," says Regina Mendoza, Psy.D., a clinical psychologist in Miami. And the trigger can shift, too: Today, it may be your credit card balance; tomorrow, your mother's health problems.

Experts like Mendoza say you can fine-tune relief so it fits as well as your favorite summer capris, matching the most effective stress-buster to your particular hot button. Figure out what really sets you off - and the solution - so you can finally put your feet up and waggle your toes in those balmy breezes.

      1. When it comes to money, you are…

      A. paralyzed with worry, wondering how you'll pay for the new roof or your kids' college tuition

      B. sometimes tense as you mull over your retirement savings

      C. pretty sure no one at your house will starve

Try some of our favorite festival snacks!Try some of our favorite festival snacks!

The foodies at Good Housekeeping and our sister site, Delish.com, have seen it all when it comes to good eats. From unconventional fried foods to childhood classics, these festival snacks from state fairs across the country will whet your appetite.

      Nostalgic Foods
"People love fried food, and a fair or another big public celebration feels, I suppose, like a good time to indulge. What I think has become trendier during the past couple of years are fried sweets and nostalgic food items, things like jelly beans and Kool-Aid that people really enjoyed as kids. The jelly beans first appeared at the Massachusetts State Fair, also known as the Big E, in 2011 - the jelly beans were first dipped in funnel cake batter before being fried, and look almost like little doughnuts or fritters."
      - Lauren Haslett, Editor, Delish.com

      Funnel Cake
"My favorite treat at any fair is always a hot fried funnel cake completely covered in a snowstorm of powdered sugar!"

    • The Real Health Benefits of Chia Seeds

Our nutritionist analyzes the health benefits of chia seeds

A quick Google, Bing, or Yahoo search on chia might have you convinced that chia seeds - infamous for forming an impressive green coat of fur on Chia Pets - have some seriously awesome health benefits. The seeds are credited with everything from improving cardiovascular health and stabilizing blood sugar to aiding with weight loss, making it ever more tempting to delve into the growing market of foods made with chia. But is it worth it? I asked my intern, Ann Lokuta, Masters of Public Health degree candidate from the University of Michigan School of Public Health (who is also studying to become a registered dietitian) to wade through the claims. Here's what she found.

Weight loss: Chia is loaded with fiber (1 oz. has 11g!) and contains more veggie protein than an equivalent serving size of soybeans. Fiber- and protein-rich foods take longer to digest, giving your brain time to register that you've eaten-potentially before you've overeaten. Still, studies on the weight loss benefits

    • Insanely Easy Two-Ingredient Ice Cream Bread

      Lemon Blueberry Ice Cream Bread

Want to give new meaning to the term quick bread? Recently there's been a lot of buzz on the web about 2-ingredient ice cream bread. Could ice cream and self-rising flour turn into something tasty, without eggs or butter? As a "serious baker" I was skeptical.

One of the things I love about my job is that we can test concepts like this on the spot. I wondered: Is it a fluke? Does it only work with super-premium ice cream? What if you don't have self-rising flour?... you get the idea. So off we went. Laura Arnold, from Davidson College, who is interning with us this summer, enthusiastically helped me with testing. We plotted pan treatment, ice cream brands, ice cream flavors, extra add-ins, and more.

Our first tests were the basics: self-rising flour and vanilla ice cream. I thought premium would be best as it has less air and more fat and solids. The first brand of ice cream we used was Haagen Dasz, trying it with both Gold Medal self-rising flour and our own self-rising flour

    • 4 New Uses for Mason Jars

Mason JarsFrom bell-bottoms to skinny jeans, from Led Zeppelin to Beyonce, what's hot is ever-changing. I'm very far from a trendsetter, but am a major trend-follower. I jumped on the bacon bandwagon (and my thighs paid for it). I'll proudly admit that I know every word to Britney Spears' "Hit Me Baby One More Time," and I cruised through the "Hunger Games" trilogy in two weeks flat. Recently, I've been hooked on all things Mason jar.

You can see these antique-looking jars decorating every Pottery Barn catalog, lining the shelves at Walmart, and holding drinks in bars throughout the country. But did you know that John Landis Mason invented the Mason jar in 1858 for preserving foods? Did you also know that the Mason jar was popular well into the 1950's when processed food became a big hit? Me neither. Trends come and go, and 60 years later the Mason jar is making a comeback. One big difference: Now you'll find these jars holding everything from pencils to

Everything you need to save your skin is sitting in your pantry or fridge right now.

      1. The problem: Dry, aging skin

The fix: A decadent, antioxidant-packed cocoa mask replenishes moisture and gives skin a restored, youthful appearance. "As skin ages, the moisture barrier begins to break down leading to dryness; the immunity layer of the skin weakens," says Jasmina Aganovic, founder of Bona Clara skincare line. "Hydration is the most important skin saver at this stage!"

Recipe: Combine 1 tablespoon cocoa powder, 1 tablespoon sour cream, 1 tablespoon honey, and one egg white. Apply to face and let dry before rinsing. The powerful ingredients make this a multi-tasking wonder-cream: Sour cream is a form of lactic acid that hydrates as it gently exfoliates; honey is a humectant that also boosts hydration while the protein in the egg white tightens and firms skin.

For extra wrinkle-fighting power, try Neutrogena Rapid Wrinkle Repair ($20, amazon.com) or RoC Retinol Correxion Deep Wrinkle Night Cream ($17, amazon.com).
