    • Why Summer Heat Make Us Grumpy

      Sarah Jio, Glamour magazine

Got a case of grumpypants? Well, it is Monday, but experts say the nationwide heatwave could have something to do with it. Here's why...

Hot weather not only takes a toll on our bodies, it can make tempers flair, say experts. MSNBC asked Northwestern's Nancy Molitor about how and why this happens, and she says that hot weather does lead to hotheadedness. In fact, according to past research, hot, and especially humid, weather has been associated with bad moods, aggression and violence.

And, "trouble sleeping, dehydration and restrictions on our daily actives--such as being cooped up inside all day to avoid the sweltering heat--may all [also] contribute to a worsening mood in warm weather," MSNBC reports.

Aha--so that explains my grumpy mood yesterday! It was almost 90 degrees in my bedroom upstairs.

      Lexi Petronis, Glamour magazine

If your problem area is your tummy, you may think you've tried every option to whittle away fat. But wait, have you considered this surprising advice?

"When stress is high, a hormone called cortisol shoots up," write the editors of Women's Health. "And high cortisol levels equal high belly fat." Here's the surprising advice that has nothing to do with exercise or diet: "Take at least 10 to 15 minutes a day to decompress and reduce your cortisol levels, and a flat stomach will be one less thing to worry about."

      Some de-stress ideas:
*Take a hot bubble bath with lavender

*Write each day in a journal
*Sip herbal tea while listening to soothing music (my fave)

    • Could Quitting Cigarettes Be Just a Vaccine Away?

      Lexi Petronis, Glamour magazine

Ask anyone who's ever given up--or tried to give up--smoking and odds are she'll tell you it's a hard habit to break. It may even feel impossible. So imagine this: a simple vaccine that could stop the smoking habit in its tracks. Pure fantasy, right? Not at all, according to this incredible research...

See more: 7 Signs of True Love

Researchers from Weill Cornell Medical College have developed an actual vaccine that makes the kidneys pump out antibodies that intercept nicotine before it goes anywhere--which means there's no possibility of the smoker getting that rush. That rush, of course, is one of the reasons smoking is so addicting... and what's the point of smoking if you don't get anything out of it?

So far, the vaccine has been tested solely on mice, but the researchers are hopeful: just one shot has been proven to keep the mice from jonesing for nicotine for the rest of

    • Pharmacist Refuses to Fill Birth Control Prescription Based on Religious Beliefs

      Lexi Petronis, Glamour magazine

So this just happened: a woman in New Mexico, Susanne Koestner, called the same Walgreens she's been going to for eight years to have her prescription for birth control pills refilled for same-day pickup. But this time, the pharmacist refused to do it--and here's why.

He said birth control pills were against his religious beliefs, and that Koestner could wait to get her prescription somewhere else, or the next day from a different Walgreens pharmacist.

Let's put aside the fact that she needed the pills for that day (skipping days could potentially make the pill less effective) for a moment and focus on a few points: 1) according to Walgreens, the company has a policy that allows pharmacists to refuse to fill prescriptions if it's against their beliefs (but the pharmacist must refer the customer to another pharmacist who's on duty); 2) in 2008, Sarah wrote about a pharmacy in Virginia

Eat your blueberries, girls! Really, they could be the ticket to glowing, gorgeous skin. Here's what you need to know:

"Blueberries are very nutritionally dense and contain powerful antioxidants, which protect our skin by neutralizing free radicals, which can damage skin cells," said dermatologist Dr. Howard Murad to Refinery 29. "Blueberries are vascular constrictors, which assist in reducing redness for those who suffer from sensitive skin conditions such as rosacea, as well as help neutralize acne-prone skin. In addition, if you have blotchy, dry, dull, or sun-damaged skin, eating blueberries on a regular basis can help leave skin looking clearer, firmer, and more youthful looking."

Scientists have reported that flowers boost mood before, and past studies have hinted that daffodils, particularly yellow-colored flowers, may have the power to improve happiness, but the latest research takes it a step further.

In a new study conducted by Danish researchers, daffodils were found to be able to penetrate a layer of the brain in a way that could someday be used to treat depression.

    • Pregnant and Drinking? Maybe

      Danica Lo, Glamour magazine

Contrary to conventional beliefs about alcohol intake during pregnancy, a new study suggests that alcohol, in moderation, may not be that big of a deal to a developing baby. But, will the findings be misinterpreted by some?

See more: 19 Cute Celebrity Hairstyles to Consider

We've gotten pretty used to thinking that zero alcohol in pregnancy is the only healthy way to go. Not so fast, say Danish researchers. In their study of more than 1,600 pregnancies, they found that light to moderate drinking (as many as 8 drinks per week) had no effect on attention, self-control, intelligence or general health of babies in their first five years.

Experts in the US are quick to point out that the standard glass of wine in Denmark is about two ounces smaller than in the US, and others say that larger-scale studies need to be conducted before these findings alter pregnant women's notions about drinking.

      Sarah Jio, Glamour magazine

Love salad? Good girl! But, did you know that most people make a mistake when it comes to their salads? And it has nothing to do with portion size. Want to take a guess?

Researchers at Purdue say that most people are dressing their salads the wrong way. In fact, they warn that fat-free and low-fat salad dressings may be short-changing you in the nutrition department.

Yes, we've talked about the dangers of calorie-laden salads and overly rich dressings, but people are so frightened by fat, it seems that we've missed the memo that a bit of healthy fat, especially on a salad, is actually good for your body.

The researchers say that most salad veggies and greens fall into a category of nutrients that require some amount of fat to help your body absorb the nutrients and antioxidants. In other words, without the drizzle of olive oil, you're less likely to retain all the nutrients of that
