    • 4 Fitness & Weight Loss Myths (Don't Be Fooled By These)

http://www.stayhomeworkout.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/dumbbells.jpgWhat crazy thing did you once believe about health or fitness that turned out to be false? One of my favorite fitness bloggers shared a list of fitness and weight loss lies women tend to fall victim to, and I had to share them with you ...

For those of you who haven't checked out her blog, The Fitnessista, you really must--she's an amazing whirlwind of healthy living advice and ideas. I'm constantly inspired by her!)

      1. Restricting calories is the way to lose fat. Quite the contrary, says Gina: "It elicits an I'm starving response and causes the body to hold onto fat, in case it needs it for the winter. Your body is an engine that needs fuel to do its thang!"

      2. Crunches will give you a six pack. "Nope. You need a combo of healthy eats, cardio and minimal toning work for lovely abbies."

      3. You can make fat cells disappear. "While you can reduce the size of fat cells, they never actually go away." [Note from Sarah: This is a sort of depressing reality, but, eating

    • Researchers Say to Drink This With a Fatty Meal (It May Protect Your Heart)

http://media.zenfs.com/en-US/blogs/partner/orangejuice.jpgSay you slip up and down a burger, with bacon on top, and fries, then have some kind of gargantuan ice cream dessert afterward (hey, it happens!). OK, not so good, but, according to a new study, you can protect the damage that meal may do to your blood vessels and heart by drinking this beverage with dinner ...

      OJ!

Researchers from the University of Buffalo say that beverages containing flavonoids, like orange juice, may help "neutralize" the damaging effect a high-fat meal can have on your heart and blood vessels.

"Our data show, for the first time to our knowledge, that drinking orange juice with a meal high in fat and carbohydrates prevented the marked increases in reactive oxygen species and other inflammatory agents," says lead author Husam Ghanim, PhD.

Now, this doesn't mean that high-fat meals are suddenly healthy with the addition of orange juice (don't we wish), but, it's a great way to blunt the bad health

http://media.zenfs.com/en-US/blogs/partner/peppermints_brainfood.jpgI don't know about you, but when the clock strikes 8 p.m., my cravings go into high gear. You too? Here are four smart ways to keep your evening eating in check from wellness expert Melissa Cassera ...

Late night eating can sabotage a healthy eating regimen," says Melissa Cassera, a former community health educator who's now a spokesperson on health and fitness topics. "Some people even take in more calories in one late-night snack session than they did the entire day!" Hey, a healthy snack is always a good idea, but if your evening eating is getting out of control (been there, done that!), here's Melissa's advice on how to reign things in:

      1. Use your Tivo: "Set your Tivo to record all your favorite TV programs and start watching them 15 minutes late. That way you can skip through the commercial breaks as you watch them--and leave no time to get up for a snack!"

    • Question of the Day: I'm Working Out, So Why Am I Not Losing Weight?

http://media.zenfs.com/en-US/blogs/partner/exercise.jpgOne of the most frequent questions I hear from people about health has to do with exercise and weight loss. You kick it up into high gear at the gym, you eat right--so why the heck aren't you losing weight? Interesting answers, from this fitness expert ...

MSN's fitness expert by Martica Heaner, Ph.D., M.A., M.Ed., fielded the following question recently: "I've been doing cardio and weight training four to five times a week for about two months. My waist, hips and love handles have shrunk significantly, but my weight hasn't gone down much. I'm still nearly the same weight as when I started! What can I do to drop more pounds?"

Heaner's advice? Stop focusing on the scale (which is my standard advice, too!): "Scale or no scale," she says, "if your love handles are shrinking, your exercise routine is starting to work! To see bigger and better results, you just need to stick to it and be patient."

    • The Incredible Thing Exercise (Of Any Kind) Does for Your Mind

0324-running_vg.jpgYou guys know about my love of a good jog, and I've told you before about how it not only helps me clear my head, but it also does this amazing thing for me--the same thing my friend just wrote about in the new issue of Fitness magazine ...

Running--and exercise of all kind!--unlocks my creativity in a major way. I often bring my Blackberry on my jogs so that I can email myself all my ideas while I'm on my cool-down quarter mile. Is this nuts? Sort of, but while I'm out there pounding the pavement, my brain goes into overdrive mode--and it's sort of wonderful. I've reached conclusions on tough decisions and written the intros to articles and posts for this blog--in my head--while out on the road.

    • The Latest News on High Fructose Corn Syrup Isn't Good

http://media.zenfs.com/en-US/blogs/partner/soft+drink.jpgWe've talked about the high fructose corn syrup controversy before, and now it's in the news again, after a study from a major university says the ingredient may make you fatter than regular ol' sugar. The details ...

People who have come out in favor of high fructose corn syrup (HFCS), like this recent CBS News story, may be eating their words after the results of a new study from researchers at Princeton University find that HFCS may come with some serious health consequences.

Related: If You're Going to Eat Junk Food-Have This Kind!

The research team found that rats who consumed HFCS gained weight faster than the rats who ate sugar (same caloric intake). Worse, the rats who ate up the HFCS accumulated more belly fat. Lovely.

"When rats are drinking high-fructose corn syrup at levels well below those in soda pop, they're becoming obese--every single one, across the board," said researcher Bart Hoebel. "Even when rats are fed a high-fat diet, you don't see this; they

http://media.zenfs.com/en-US/blogs/partner/pd_sneezing_070425_ms.jpgIs it just me, or are more people sneezing and itching their eyes due to seasonal allergies these days than ever before? Here's what experts have to say about the increase in seasonal allergies and the little things you can do to control them ...

More people are sneezing this year, or so say researchers who note that seasonal allergies are hitting earlier than usual and are, in many cases, more intense for more people--due to greater pollution and pollen counts, ugh.

Seasonal allergy sufferers know just how bad it can get. A friend of mine told me that these kind of allergies (which I am so fortunate not to suffer from--but show me a cat, and my head swells up for hours!) make you feel like you have a head cold that you can not rid yourself of for months--sounds awful. What can you do? I liked these tips in a recent Women's Health piece:

      1. Close your windows: I know, we always talk about letting fresh air in,

http://media.zenfs.com/en-US/blogs/partner/glass-of-water.jpgNeed a little motivation in the weight management department? Whether you're trying to shed pounds or just happy with where you're at now and hoping to keep things status quo, here are a few smart ideas ...

I loved the slideshow on FitSugar recently with some good ideas about weight management. To see the full list, click here. Here are my faves, in a nutshell:

*Hydrate! The FitSugar ladies remind us that drinking plenty of water is important for overall health, but not getting enough may also mess with your metabolism--turns out, dehydration can do a number on your bod. (Hint: go take a water break--now!)

*Eat breakfast. It's a no-brainer, but we all can use a reminder to eat a high-fiber, high-protein meal in the a.m. hours, right? I eat breakfast regularly, but fall victim to occasional bad habits and forgetfulness.

*And, my favorite: Don't feel obliged to eat celebratory sweets. I love this, because how many times have we all been presented with a gross slice of

http://media.zenfs.com/en-US/blogs/partner/gabourey-sidibe.jpgOf course, he had to open his mouth and talk--it's what he does. But, some are saying that Howard Stern went too far when he made a remark about Oscar nominee Gabourey Sidibe's weight and how she'll never get another acting role again due to her size ...

During Howard Stern's Sirius satellite show earlier this week, co-host Robin Quivers mentioned that Sidibe should have, reports CNN, "looked around at the Oscars and noticed that none of the other working actresses looked like her."

Then Howard Stern added: "What movie could she play in? You feel bad because everyone pretends that she's part of show business, and she's never going to be in another movie."

Hollywood industry insider Jeffrey Wells added: "Gabby is a lovely person and a fine actress, but the hard fact is that she's way, way too fat." He also reportedly added that Sidibe will suffer from health problems as well as limited career opportunities if she

    • Pringles With a Side of Salmonella? I'm Frustrated With Food Safety in America

http://media.zenfs.com/en-US/blogs/partner/pringles.jpgAck! Are you guys as sick as I am of hearing about all the food recalls going on right now? First nuts, then soup mixes, and now some varieties of Pringles potato chips? (Big eye roll.) Let's play a little game: Which food product do you think will be contaminated next?

Don't get me wrong, I'm glad that the FDA and food makers are cooperating to yank any potentially contaminated products in effort to keep us safe, but I feel a tad cynical about all of this--cynical in that I'm frustrated that food makers can't seem to get things right from the get go.
