    • The Top 10 Most Nutrient-Dense Foods (Can You Guess Them?)

http://media.zenfs.com/en-US/blogs/partner/kale.jpgLast week at Whole Foods, a poster caught my eye. It listed the top 50 or so most "nutrient dense" foods, according to a compilation of past scientific research. Could you guess the top 10?

Joel Fuhrman, M.D., author of Eat for Health, created rankings of foods according the nutrients they pack--vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, etc. According to Fuhrman, here are the top "superfoods", along with their Aggregate Nutrient Density Index (ANDI) scores:

Important to note: Researchers are learning more about specific antioxidants and nutrients every day, so just because your favorite fruit or veggies isn't on this list, doesn't mean it's not a good choice. Instead, let this list guide you to eat more of a variety of fruits and veggies, but don't let it steer you away. For instance, I love kiwi fruit, and I don't see it here. Oddly, studies have shown that kiwi--ounce for ounce--is a highly nutrient dense fruit. So, go figure. This list, like most research, is an opinion. But I

    • Have You Ever Heard of Sexual Anorexia?

http://media.zenfs.com/en-US/blogs/partner/070312_PB_Bed.gifI will admit, in my years of reporting about health, I have never come across the term "sexual anorexia"--until last week, when I was doing some research for a story about sex addiction (which has been in the news a lot lately--hello Tiger!). The details on this surprising and often misunderstood condition ...

Related: 5 shocking things many women don't know about sex ...

According to the experts at SexHelp.com, the official site of psychologist and sexual health expert Patrick J. Carnes, sexual anorexia is "an obsessive state in which the physical, mental, and emotional task of avoiding sex dominates one's life. Like self-starvation with food or compulsive dieting or hoarding with money, deprivation with sex can make one feel powerful and defended against all hurts."

Like any other addiction, Carnes writes, in sexual anorexia the "preoccupation with the avoidance of sex can seem to obliterate one's life problems. The obsession can then become a way to cope with all stress and

    • Do You Wash Bagged Lettuce and Salad Mixes Before Using Them? (News on Why You Probably Should)

http://media.zenfs.com/en-US/blogs/partner/organic-salad.jpgDo you wash your bagged lettuce and spinach before tossing up your favorite salad? I know, I know, the bag does say "triple washed," but here's a compelling reason to wash your greens a FOURTH time at home ...

A recent Consumer Reports study found that nearly 40 percent of pre-washed salads (bagged or in clamshells) may be "contaminated with bacteria that could be harmful to your health."

Related: Beware of these 6 calorie bomb salads!

"They did a small study, just over 200 samples, and they found that 39 percent of those samples contained a family of bacteria known as coliform, which is a general indicator for contamination," said "The Early Show" medical correspondent Dr. Jennifer Ashton. "Twenty-three percent of them contained a bacteria known as enterococcus, which is usually associated with fecal contamination. Not what you want to hear in your produce."

The worst offender among greens, according to the research? Spinach.

Keep eating your greens, of course, but

    • The Girl's Guide to Running: 7 Surprising Things I've Learned About Jogging This Month

http://media.zenfs.com/en-US/blogs/partner/running_shoes.jpgI've told you guys about my new commitment to running--just got back from a jog today, in fact!--and it's funny, I've had so many unusual realizations about running this month--things I never knew or thought of ...

      1. People seem to run faster, longer when they run in groups or with a friend. I've been watching people run while I'm out huffing and puffing on my three-times-per-week jogs, and I've noticed something (unscientific) about runners: They run faster when running together. Weird, right? But, without fail, the groups of runners who run together--or just in a pair--pass me far more often than solo joggers, who seem to take a more leisurely pace.

      2. Dogs aren't always a runner's best friend. I love my pooch, but she's constantly stopping to sniff things, having to do her business, and frequently wants to sit down and take a rest. While I love giving her lots of exercise, I've realized that she's not the best idea for my exercise.

    • Swimming Is So Healthy, But Public Pools? Researchers Say Maybe Not So Much

http://media.zenfs.com/en-US/blogs/partner/90medlarge.jpgIf you love to swim--or just enjoy an occasional splash in the summer--researchers have some interesting, if not a tad disturbing, news for you. We've talked about the germ-factor of public pools and hot tubs in the past, but the research on the subject isn't making us any more confident about it.

According to a large new study from Australian researchers, a dip in the public pool or local lake could increase your odds of catching the stomach flu.

The scientists found that more than 2,800 adults and children they followed for 15 months, participants were somewhat more likely to develop gastroenteritis (aka, a stomach bug) in the week or two following a public swim.

The study seems to show a correlation between swimming and a bunch of nasty bugs--including viral, bacterial or parasitic infections, all leading to stomach pain, vomiting, diarrhea and fever.

Yeah, a little gross. Still, I'm not convinced that swimming is the evil one--yet. Just practice good hygiene, of

    • But Baby It's Cold Outside! I Know, But Here Are 3 Reasons Why Outdoor Exercise Is So Healthy

http://yourfitnessguru.files.wordpress.com/2009/02/running2.jpgOf course, any form of exercise is healthy and great, but lately I've noticed a trend: fitness experts encouraging people to do their calorie-burning outside. Here are the top reasons why they may be right ...

A trainer I know begs her clients to take their fitness outside as much as possible--and she's not alone. Detox and natural health guru Natalia Rose is a big fan of outdoor exercise (in fact, she's said before that she only works out outdoors!). So what's the big deal? I think it boils down to these three factors:

      1. Fresh air is so good for us. You've heard the news about the quality of indoor air, right? In short, the air in our homes is a lot dirtier than we think. So if you can't get outside for a fresh-air workout, at least open a window while you're on the treadmill.

    • Kelly Rowland Says Once She Got Rid of This One Thing in Her Diet, Weight Loss Was "Easy"

Click to view full size imageNewly slimmed-down Kelly Rowland is dishing on her simple weight loss plan that involved ditching just one thing ...

When Kelly Rowland arrived at the party for celebrity makeup artist Scott Barnes's new book, About Face this week, she looked svelte in her black sequined Herve Leger gown.

Her healthy 10-pound weight loss, she says, was due to one thing: cutting added sugar out of her diet.

"I'm telling you, I'm not eating sugar," she said. "I didn't even try to lose weight," Rowland said at the party. "I read this book, called You Are What You Eat. [The author, Gillian McKeith,] is talking about sugar, she's talking about meat, she's talking about cheese. I did some of those things for a month, but for the most part, it is just sugar that is gone from my diet."

We've talked about the benefits of reducing sugar in our diets before here on Vitamin G, and I think it's an interesting reminder that whether it's sugar or anything else, sometimes a small change can make a big

    • The FDA Warns That BPA Could Be a Health Threat--Here How to Avoid It

http://media.zenfs.com/en-US/blogs/partner/Canned_Tomato_Paste.jpgHealth watchdogs have long worried about the chemical BPA (which is basically EVERYWHERE, gals) and how it could impact our health in negative ways. But now, after a long silence on the matter, the FDA has gotten on board, warning that BPA may actually be a health threat after all. So, what's a health-conscious gal to do? Here's my interpretation of this concerning news ...

I've written about BPA here in the past (Bisphenol A, commonly known as BPA)--first about water bottles, then about canned foods. Truth is, I've been suspicious of this chemical for a long time. So it's not exactly surprising to hear, via a CBS News report, that the FDA is now acknowledging that BPA could be bad for us--most notably bad for pregnant women, babies and kids.

Related: BPA and water bottles: What you need to know.

According to the report: "The FDA announced, on the basis of new studies that can test for 'subtle effects' that, while BPA is still considered safe, it now has 'some concern' about

    • 7 Things You Can Do to Be Healthier (and Happier!) in 2010

http://media.zenfs.com/en-US/blogs/partner/black-tea.jpgIf you're a little late on making a New Year's resolution, no worries. Here are seven easy things you can do this year to be a little healthier and happier. See if you can do one--or all seven!

      1. Three words: Let it go. (It will mean a different thing to every woman, but we all have something toxic (a person, a job, a worry) that we need to say goodbye to--right now.)

      2. Buy a new fitness DVD. I love fitness DVDs, because you can spend $9.99 or $14.99 and get some brand new exercise inspiration. Need some ideas? Here's a Vitamin G reader fave to try, and some yoga DVDs you might like, too.

      3. Go shopping--for house plants. I tend to think houseplants are a little tacky looking, but I swallowed my pride and bought four this week because the research about their air-purifying qualities is really convincing. P.S. Indoor air is way more polluted than outdoor air, and a humble little houseplant can help!
