On a blistering morning last June, Danelle Stoppel, a mental-health volunteer with the American Red Cross, spotted a man standing in front of a smoldering structure in Waldo Canyon, CO. It was his home, one of hundreds lost to the wildfires that scorched 18,000 acres. He was holding a burned gas cap in his hand. Something about the way he looked at it, turning it over and over, drew Danelle to him. "I asked him about it," she says. "He told me the cap was the only thing left from an old Datsun he and his 10-year-old son were rehabbing together. He was planning on giving the car to his son when he was old enough to drive," says Danelle.

      Talking it Through
Danelle offered him what she says all disaster victims need: a chance to tell his story. "It's the first step in healing," she says. "They need you to hear it. It makes it real for them. And they need you to bear witness to all that they've lost," she says. The man explained that the fire had hit on his son's

Learn which tips to dismiss so you can really live longerBy Anne Roderique-Jones

      Extend Your Life
"Stop drinking coffee and alcohol." "Take an aspirin daily." How many times have you heard that advice for adding years to your life? Turns out, lots of long-held wisdom just isn't true. Read on to see which suggestions you should ignore and what actually ups longevity. Photo by Getty Images.

      1. Lay off the java.
You've probably read that multiple cups of coffee a day can be bad for you (jitter city), but research published in the New England Journal of Medicine may prove the opposite. Male and female participants who had two or three cups a day and didn't smoke were 10% and 13% less likely, respectively, to have died during the 14-year-long study than those who never or rarely drank coffee. Men and women who drank a single daily cup were 6% and 5% less likely, respectively, to pass away. According to the researchers, more cups mean a lower risk of stroke, diabetes and heart and respiratory disease. But watch the cream and

Learn which questions and statements annoy unattached women mostBy Arricca Elin SanSone

The next time you're tempted to advise single friends, bite your tongue. "You may believe you're empathizing, but intrusive comments may offend your friend," says Helen Friedman, PhD, a clinical psychologist in St. Louis who specializes in relationships. "Before you open your mouth, ask yourself what's more important: your opinion or your friendship?" Here's what to avoid saying to your single friends, what you can sometimes say or do instead and when to simply zip your lips. Photo by Getty Images

      1. "Why aren't you married?"

This question almost universally pushes single people's buttons. "Perhaps the answer is 'none of your business,'" says *Grace from Detroit. In fact, it's rude to assume singles are looking for a relationship. "This question presumes that the single person is unhappily single," says Bella DePaulo, PhD, author of Singled Out and Singlism who blogs about singles. "Many unattached people live their best, most authentic

This loosens debris and removes surface tangles, allowing bathtime suds to be more effective.

      2. Place a mat or towel in the tub.
An uneasy dog is more likely to bolt during a bath, and this will help give her sure footing.

      3. Choose the right shampoo.
If she smells bad, try one with rosemary, peppermint, lavender or lemongrass-all natural deodorizers that fight odor-causing bacteria. If she is itchy, look for one made with colloidal oatmeal, and without sulfates (which can be harsh on skin).

Follow the journalist's journey from By Katie Couric

After a lifetime of battling clutter, Katie's declared that enough is enough. Left, Katie, eating dinner on the floor of her home office, amid her piles. Photo by Meredith Kennedy.

When I lived in Washington, DC, after college, my then-roommate called me "Pig-Pen." It was a well-deserved nickname: A few months prior, as a senior at the University of Virginia, I'd lived on The Lawn, a particularly picturesque area of campus. Outside my dorm room were pristine pavilions and lush, grassy courts. But inside my room was a mess of epic proportions. Three Mile Island was an easier cleanup.

On graduation day, my parents were driving down from our home in Arlington, VA. I figured I had about an hour to create some semblance of cleanliness-or at least an upgrade from biohazard status. I stowed clothes in drawers, stuffed papers and books in cubbies, and came up with what I thought was a really creative way to tackle my pile of dirty dishes: I hid them in the trunk of my

You jot down everything you spend, ideally as you spend it.

Go this route if... you love lists and you think you'll be consistent about whipping out a notebook every time you pay for something. You can also keep receipts and tally them later, but you'll be more accurate if you do it on the spot.

Discover the unexpected, off-the-wall things that can arouse your manBy Amanda Montell

      Unusual Aphrodisiacs
Obviously, wearing a body-hugging ensemble or watching a sexy flick together can get a man in the mood. But there are some surprising sights (and even scents!) guys find equally arousing. Here, experts share the top 10 most unexpected turn-ons for men, and how you can use them to spice things up in ways you won't believe. Photo by Thinkstock

      1. The Smell of Pumpkin Pie
Forget the Chanel No. 5, ladies. Chicago's Smell and Taste Research Center found the scent of pumpkin pie mixed with lavender increased men's penile blood flow more than 23 other fragrances. Why? The combination might conjure up memories of a pleasure-filled meal or simply make men feel extra-relaxed. Thanksgiving desserts and potpourri may seem innocent enough, but bake a pie next to a sprig of lavender, and your hubby may suddenly want to take a trip to the bedroom.

Up your work efficiency with these surprising ideasBy Samantha Toscano

      Get More Done
It happens to everyone. You start the work day knowing full well what you have to finish by quitting time, but at 5 P.M., you haven't achieved nearly as much as you'd planned. "Being productive is more than just checking off boxes on to-do lists," says Heidi Hanna, PhD, author of The Sharp Solution. "It's bringing our full and best energy to the time we have to do our work well." While we can't take tasks off your plate, these energizing tips will make you more efficient-and give you extra time to do the things you love.

      1. Bring your work to a coffee shop.

And not because of the caffeine-packed java on offer. According to a study published in the December 2012 Journal of Consumer Research, moderate noise, such as the mid-level buzz in bustling coffee shops, enhances performance on creative tasks more than soft or loud ambient noise. Plus, being with the other patrons pumps up oxytocin, which decreases the stress hormones that cause mental blocks, says Dr.
