    • Illnesses Doctors May Overlook in Babies

We consider our pediatricians to be experts when it comes to caring for our wee ones. We don't hesitate to call them in the middle of the night when our babies have unexplained fevers or aren't acting like themselves. Because children under the age of two cannot always communicate what is bothering them, the doctors can only treat the symptoms we can describe, often overlooking some serious, but treatable illnesses. Children's Health recently identified the most common medical conditions missed by pediatricians, and we have delved into them here.

      • Vision and Hearing Issues - Just because baby leaves the hospital with a passing grade on vision and hearing tests does not mean perfection forever. Watch where the toddler holds her books and where she sits when watching TV. If she tends to turn her head to hear things or tilt her head one way to see or hear things, raise the concern with her doctor.

If baby babble is music to a mother's ear, then full sentences are enough to send her screaming from a mountain top, especially if the tot is declaring his love for her. There are a few things that will render a mother speechless, breathless and often teary, too. Check out these phrases that will have mommy swooning.

      • I missed you. - Even if she's only gone for a couple of hours, it's still heartwarming for mommy to hear how much she's been missed during her excursion.
      • Thank You - Wee ones learn early on that their mommy has been caring for them non-stop since they arrived in this world. It is a wonderful thing to hear them verbalize their appreciation though their actions have certainly shown their gratitude much earlier.
      • I'm sorry. - ...
      • I love my family. - Parents can hope that their children will get along with their siblings but it's wonderful when they declare their affection for the rest of the clan.
      • I love school. - Parents worry

    • Reinventing the Afterbirth: Placenta Becomes Food or Toy

Chitchat about mucous plugs and episiotomies doesn't make most moms squeamish, but as a lady near the end of my third pregnancy, I just reached my limit in learning about the placenta teddy bear! Our friends over at Inhabitots are polling their green readers as to whether the toy made from the disposable organ to commemorate the birth is cute or creepy.

While some women believe in lotus birth and create a pouch in which to store the placenta until their child naturally separates from it, others like Matthew McConaughey and Camila Alves follow the Aboriginal tradition of planting their babe's placenta in an orchard. Then, there are parents who indulge in placentophagia, the eating of the placenta, which is rumored to curb postpartum depression and hemorrhage. Preoccupied with my new bundles of joy, I don't even remember delivering the afterbirth and never gave any thought to taking it home, perhaps because at the time, I was ignorant of all these options. Were you?

      • Swollen Hands and Pudgy Fingers - Waking up with fingers the size of sausages can affect more than your wedding rings. To help this

In 1970, the average American age of a woman becoming a mother was 21.7 and in 2006 it was 25. A recent report said that the statistic for the United States is still much younger than that of other countries like Britain and Switzerland where women are 30. Medical advancements in fertility have made putting off motherhood an option for many ladies. But, stories like that of Maria del Carmen Bousada who became the world's oldest mom at 66 when she got pregnant via in-vitro fertilization leave some people bewildered. She died last month leaving her 2-year-old twins, Pau and Christian behind. Do you think there should be a law discerning when a woman is too old to have kids? Regardless of how you decide to wean your tot from the paci, there will be good days and bad. Here are some techniques mamas have used.

      • A visit from the pacifier fairy. Have the pacifier fairy visit your home to collect the suckers for lil boys and girls who need them. Like the tooth fairy, this one leaves a gift as a thank you.
      • Make it unusable. Cut the silicone nipple vertically in half. Your tot's tongue won't like the feeling as much as the original.
      • Give it to the baby animals. At Stockholm's Skansen Zoo, wee ones donate their old pacifiers to the new baby animals and the binkies are hung from trees in the children's zoo.
      • Change the rules. Start curtailing the places the pacifier can be used until it
