Come November 3rd, It's going to be two years since I've had weight-loss surgery. I stopped losing weight close to a year ago now, and I've bounced around the same three to five pounds for about that time. For the longest, I waited for the scale to really register some kind of change--it had been changing so precipitously for so long, it felt like it would not ever stop. Like I'd be losing weight forever, fascinated with the numbers on the scale forever, always changing every week, and having a real, palpable, measure of that change in the numbers there between my toes.

It's so easy to sleep in, shower fast and scoot out the door without considering whether it's smart to stop and pack a lunch (or eat a good breakfast, for that matter). The tips are for kids' lunches, true, but I think adults could stand to pick up a tip or two from their very good advice, and with a little tweaking, the sample menus at the end could work out

Of all things that I have grown in my vegetable beds this summer, the most successful HANDS DOWN are the herbs.

I planted a ton of basil (four different varieties) - and I will do the same next year. Basil is lovely in the garden, and indispensable in the kitchen. I've used my Genovese basil, 6 plants worth, consistently since April - in pastas, pestos, salads - it adds such a burst of yummy! My favorite discovery of this season is the basil variety 'Siam Queen' - a gorgeous Thai basil that has narrow leaves tinges with purple, and whose flowers are beautiful little mahogany bouquets. It is a great looking plant, but it wins the day on flavor - it has spicy overtones of licorice and hit of something else I can't quite identify - cinnamon maybe? The robust taste adds so much to any dish you can imagine basil in - and invites you to dream up other recipes. What a winner!

Dear Dr. Kate,
I just read an article that claims that binge drinking prevents birth control pills from metabolizing and working correctly. What are your thoughts on this? This is especially concerning to us college students!

Dear Party-er,
Short answer: even binge drinking shouldn't affect how the pill works. The theory, I suppose, is that liver damage brought on by drinking can affect the pill's metabolism. First, most collegians escape with their livers intact, despite nights of binging. It takes years of alcoholism to induce permanent liver damage (luckily for many of my friends from college). But even if you were to drink enough to damage your liver, the pill wouldn't be metabolized as well as usual, so there would actually be higher levels of hormone in your blood...so the pill's effectiveness should remain the same. The one thing, though, that could affect effectiveness is if you take your pill and commence drinking to the point of vomiting up the pill

I'm kind of addicted to fitness-y gadgets right now (and also, fell in love with my treadmill the moment I realized that it tracks my heart rate via the hand grip), so my eyes lit up when I saw the FitBit. It looks like a chip clip but this $99 gadget seems almost too good to be true. From the company's FAQ:

"The Fitbit Tracker contains a motion sensor like the ones found in the Nintendo Wii. The Tracker senses your motion in three dimensions and converts this into useful information about your daily activities. The Tracker measures the intensity and duration of your physical activities, calories burned, steps taken, distance traveled, how long it took you to fall asleep, the number of times you woke up throughout the night and how long you were actually asleep vs. just lying in bed.
