      Samantha Egan, Glamour magazine

    • 2 Simple Words that Could Save Your Relationship

      Gena Kaufman, Glamour magazine

There's a very simple thing you can say to boost the happiness in your relationship, but you may be saying it more frequently to your barista than to your boyfriend.

Yep, it's a simple "thank you." New research out of the University of California, Berkeley says that feeling appreciated influences how you act in a relationship, and how much you want to stay in that relationship.

Researchers asked 50 undergraduates, who had been in relationships for approximately 15 months, to fill out nightly questionnaires for a week about their relationship. The questionnaires focused on appreciation--how appreciated they felt and how appreciative they were toward their partner. On days when people felt more appreciated, they were more likely to report feeling more appreciative toward their partner the next day.

Between my action-heavy role in The Avengers, my beer-drinking "dude" of a character on How I Met Your Mother, and my tomboy background, you could say I'm definitely one of the boys. Now in my old age (yes-I just turned 30), I have more female friends than male friends, but they're all like me. We're girl bros. Here's what I've learned from my years as a guys' girl, both in real life and in character.

DON'T try too hard to be "what men want"

I have so many single girlfriends who fit themselves into the mold of what they think a guy's looking for. But being comfortable around men is about being comfortable with yourself. They gravitate toward confidence.

    • What Guys Are REALLY Trying to Tell You, Part I

      Jeff Wilser, Glamour magazine

Sheesh! Guys-why can't they straight-up say what they mean? Jeff Wilser decodes the secret language of men, and their weird texts too. Keep this handbook close!

Guys want to say one thing, but we end up saying, or doing, another. So how can you learn to read us right? I consulted a few experts to help unscramble some common scenarios.

You're talking to him-but he won't stop watching TV
      What it means:
Probably nothing. (How could what you're saying compete with The Walking Dead? I mean, zombies!) As annoying as this common male behavior may be, "we all need a little zone-out time when we get home," says Carol Kinsey Goman, Ph.D., an authority on body language and communication. "Some women take bubble baths, do yoga. Men need to unwind too and often do it in front of the TV-or even in the car. I had a client whose commute went from 20 minutes to five minutes. He was miserable. He had lost his decompression time."
      How to deal:
Does he do this every night? If

"Also, if you have a round face, don't ask for a short bob. Rather, grow your hair long-all one layer-to elongate your facial structure and body type. Is chlorine bad for my ladyparts? What about salt water?

Chlorine's job is to kill bacteria, so despite rumors to the contrary, it's not likely to give you an infection like vaginitis, says Katharine O'Connell White, M.D., chief of the division of general obstetrics and gynecology at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, Massachusetts. Same goes for salt water. Both may irritate sensitive skin, though, so be sure to rinse off after you swim, she says.

I sweat a lot in summer. Normal?

"If you've always dripped sweat in hot weather, probably," says Pamela Peeke, M.D., author of Body for Life for Women. Consider an Rx antiperspirant, and stay away from sweat-inducing spicy foods. But if it's a new thing, talk to your M.D. Certain conditions and meds can increase sweat.

      Step 1: File Nails

"Shape your nails into a soft square using a thin file," says celebrity manicurist Jin Soon Choi. "If the grain is rough, go in only one direction to avoid making ridges." A great fine-grain option: Sephora Collection Glass Nail File in Purple ($12, sephora.com).

      Step 2: Clean Up

Push back cuticles with an orange stick (metal is OK but not stone-that's best left for the pros). Then use either that little nipper tool or-less scary-a cuticle eraser. We like Sally Hansen Salon Manicure Cuticle Eraser + Balm ($8, at drugstores).

    • What a Guy's Place Says About Him

Photo: Courtesy of bestbuy.comJake, Glamour magazine

Take a good look around, advises Jake. His stuff reveals more than 10 dates could.

"Jake, are these your yellow socks?" It was a Wednesday night and Inez,* whom I'd been seeing for a few weeks, had come back to my apartment after a romantic dinner out. And she'd found Natalie's socks. (From our tennis date, for the record.) Inez was amazingly laid-back about it-we hadn't had any talks about exclusivity-but still: dumb, Jake! And then I wondered, what other clues are lying around here, or around most guys' places? I asked the experts to decode a few. Consider yourself warned.
