    • Beauty Product Expiration Dates

      By Natalie Matthews, Lucky magazine

I'm not above sliding on an ancient Lip Smacker when sifting through the contents of my childhood bathroom. Ocassionally nostalgia for things that once called a Kaboodle home just gets the best of me.

Beyond that, though, I'm pretty diligent about replacing my lip glosses and nail polishes. It's a bit annoying that each beauty product lands somewhere dfferent on the expiration date spectrum, since I'd love to treat Sephora like Sam's Club and just replenish my stash of loyal favorites in one fell swoop.

But keeping track of those different shelf lives is worth it. Beauty products aren't only cleaner and safer to use when replaced regularly, they work better, too. And even if you're not afraid of a little bacteria, that's reason enough to restock them on schedule, right?

    • Crazy Nail Polish Age Limit?

Illustration by Lauren FriedmanIllustration by Lauren FriedmanQ: I'm in fashion, so my job is pretty creative, but I still wonder: Is there an age where crazy nail art starts to look wrong on you? -Lauren

      A: Dear Lauren,
I don't think this is an age question. If we're all lucky enough to make it to the nursing home, what are we going to do all day if we can't go crazy with our nails? I feel like our hair's not going to be so much fun to play with at that point.

It is, however, a work question. Clearly, if you've got a one-percenter job (investment banker, corporate lawyer, oil executive), one of the trade-offs is no nail art. (Except for pedicures, because we know you wear nothing but closed-toe shoes!) If your job is creative and you don't have a giant presentation/interview coming up, I say, carpe diem.

    • The Perfect Plus-Size Summer Dresses

Illustration by Lauren FriedmanIllustration by Lauren FriedmanBy Jean Godfrey-June, Lucky magazine

      Q:
      What's the best way for
plus-size people to enjoy cute summery dresses (if they hate showing off their arms)? -Amy

Read more: Spring's Must-Have Nail Colors

      A:
      Dear Amy,
I am not a plus size, but arm-related anything, especially sleeveless, sends me into a whirling maelstrom of insecurity. The worst problem is too-tightness: If a strap or a sleeve is going
to leave even the slightest impression or dent in the nearby skin, do not wear. Oozing arm/back/side skin is not just a plus-size issue; unless you are super-in-shape, it is worth thinking about when you try on summery sundresses.

So: Fit is essential. Beyond fit, I vote for
a fluttery (not tight) bit-of-a-sleeve kind of top. If the top has light-colored edging to
pop against skin (this works whatever your skin color), it will be even more flattering. Also, I think thick straps can be more attractive than spaghetti, if your arms are bugging

    • How Do I Keep My Makeup from Sweating Off?

      Q:
How do I keep my makeup from sweating off? -@_its-steph

Read more: Spring's Must-Have Nail Colors

      A:
      Dear @_its-steph,
Primer really helps makeup stay on. It's sort of the translucent powder of now; unless you're very young, powder can be aging, especially when caked over foundation and concealer. Primer under everything generally results in a dewier, more natural look. The exception to that rule would be mineral makeup, which is all powder and looks totally natural. Go figure.

There are eyeshadow primers, too. If you've got an elaborate eye look, it's worth the extra step. And powder blush lasts longer than cream or gel, as a rule. Well-placed concealer is always better than a ton of foundation. It lasts, looks more natural-and it's easier to touch up. Lastly, Urban Decay Big Fatty Mascara now comes in waterproof; you can't go wrong with that.

In my mind, the girl with a Crayola box selection of skinny jeans and the one doubling up her harem pants on hangers are two separate people.

One makes room for those stovepipes by pushing aside ballet flats and polka dot blouses; the other slides Comme des Garçons leather jackets and ripped Margiela t-shirts farther down the rack. They're two very different ladies-so I'm not quite sure how to envision the girl who'd wear these drop crotch skinny jeans, which are either the best-or the worst-of both worlds.

    • Best Closed-Toe Shoes for Summer

      By Elana Fishman, Lucky magazine

Maybe you're just one of those girls who isn't so crazy about showing off her feet. Maybe your pedicure happens to be a few days (OK, weeks) past its prime. Either way, we know that not everyone loves slipping on open-toed shoes come summertime.

But the higher temperatures climb, the less appealing constrictive boots and smelly sneakers seem. So what's a shoe lover to do? Pick up one of the below closed-toe footwear options, of course. Click through for our favorite warm-weather shoes that won't show your toes, but will keep you feeling (and looking) cool.

    • Would You Wear $1,800 Fish Skin Sneakers?

Photo courtesy of RayFishPhoto courtesy of RayFishBy Alison Syrett, Lucky magazine

Presumably inspired by all the designer sneakers we've been seeing lately, new footwear company RayFish is selling fancy kicks. Only instead of adding a wedge like Isabel Marant or mimicking Miu Miu's punky studs, this brand uses stingray skin harvested from individually genetically modified fish. In more basic terms: you pick a pattern and then a scientist will specially grow it on an animal. The animal's skin is then made into your shoes.

The label is currently holding a contest called "Grow Your Own Sneaker" to get people excited about the whole "bio-customization" process. The winner will receive a free pair of shoes, which are estimated to cost around $1,800, according to Fashionista.com.

    • How to Find a Good Tailor

Photo courtesy of Conde Nast ArchivePhoto courtesy of Conde Nast ArchiveBy Natalie Matthews, Lucky magazine

When it comes to choosing certain things- gyms, spas, tailors- I find reviews from strangers and friends equally problematic.

While mildly positive feedback from the girl next to me at work can be enough to send me marching to an organic juice press or Brazilian hard waxing salon, gushing Yelp posts only trigger my suspicion.

I'm disproportionately wary of the web and too trusting with 3D people, so I think it's important to go a different route sometimes, like with finding a tailor.

I don't want to bring all my stuff to a friend's beloved tailor only to feel kinda blah about the results and subconsciously resent her, or spend the better part of a TV-watching night trying to decipher the real Citysearch commenters from the owner's relatives. Instead, here's how I'd do it:

      Ask fancy boutiques for recommendations.

No matter where you live, there has to be at least one high-end clothing boutique nearby.
