    • Can You Pull Off Bangs?

      Jean Godfrey-June, Lucky magazine

Q: I'm thinking about getting bangs. Is there a way to figure out if they'll look good? -Laura

Read more: Secrets from Top Dermatologists

      A: Dear Laura,

Yes-in fact there are so many that you may never actually get the bangs, so fun is the researching part. On dailymakeover.com, you upload a photo of yourself (or use a picture of a model who shares your face shape) and try on different hairstyles. They have several bang options (though no glamorous Jane Birkin, above, who is the ultimate bangs-wearer of all time), and you can paste them right onto the image of your face. It also has a free mobile try-on app in the iTunes store (as do marykay.com and taaz.com) where you can change your hair and makeup on photos you've uploaded.

    • Why You Break Out when You're Sick

      Jean Godfrey-June, Lucky magazine

Q: Why do I break out when I'm sick? -@psun613

Read more: Secrets from Top Dermatologists

      A: Dear psun613,

Acne is a bacteria, and when you're sick, your immune system-your bacteria-fighting system-is down. If you feel any sort of illness coming on and you're at all prone to breakouts, step up your efforts. Here is my magic formula at the moment (tested on both ancient me and my 15-year-old daughter): Wipes-which exfoliate both physically and with salicylic acid-a killer, dual-formula leave-on lotion (kills bacteria, unclogs pores, smooths, perfects, doesn't irritate) and, if the breakout actually occurs, all-night spot treatments with the brilliant Umbrian clay, which is the emergency miracle killer of all time.

    • How to Tell Someone Her Lashes Look CRAZY

      Q
: What's a polite way to tell a person their lashes are too long? -Molly

Read more: Secrets from Top Dermatologists

      A: Dear Molly,

An overlong eyelash is somewhere between overlarge breast implants (which cost their owner significant time and money and would cost even more to remove) and, say, an over-enthusiastically applied slick of fuchsia lipstick: With the implants, the decent friend is obliged to bite her tongue, and with the lipstick, she's obliged to whisper, "Wait a sec, hon, you need to blot your lips a little." An eyelash is trimmed easily enough, but the effort required to make the eyelash too long in the first place (Latisse-which works so well people literally do have to trim their eyelashes, or eyelash extensions, or false lashes) usually involves enough effort and money that the person is probably intending them to look that way. Exclaiming over how long her lashes are will get you nowhere-it sounds like a rave, not a

      Q
: Going out when it's snowing: Do you wear snow boots and change into cute shoes? Or plan an outfit around chic leather boots? -@pjfeinste

I love a siege mentality; any sort of major weather is a good excuse to indulge in it! My personal strategy is to plan an outfit around clunky, crazy-looking snow boots; I think they allow for a shorter skirt than might normally be worn. The bigger the boots, the skinnier they make my legs look, or so I believe. But this is not your only option. The opposite-willfully ignoring snow, rain, etc.-is also very chic, like the pregnant, gorgeous socialite I once spied tottering down a snow-clogged street in spindly stilettoed sandals. Or people who wear white jeans when it pours outside: It's like, "My vision of the world is more powerful than ... reality!" I love this sort of attitude. Or, says

    • Girls: Shop the Show

      Natalie Matthews, Lucky magazine

Girls' costume designer, Jenn Rogien, just gets it. People no longer need television characters who collect $400 shoes like Chapsticks (despite their entry-level salaries) and consider tutus, crop tops and newsboy caps, like, totally normal (despite their good judgement). They've already seen that show.

What they haven't seen is a decent reflection of real-life dressing, with its should-have-had-this-tailored-but-whatever and don't-have-an-accessory-but-gonna-wear-the-dress-anyway moments. Of course, that casualness is meticulously planned-the ill-fitting outfits, the tattered lingerie, the repeat items, the bare-bones jewelry. It serves the show well, echoing the almost disturbing truthfulness of the plot lines, the dialogue, the characters.

Still, just because the Girls wardrobe isn't slick, glossy and fantastical doesn't mean it doesn't have its inspired moments-like in Season 2's premiere. We might not be dying to copy each look exactly, butRead More »from Girls: Shop the Show
    • Hair Straightening Options: Which is Right for You?

      Fairchild ArchiveElena Fishman, Lucky magazine

Read on to learn more about the Japanese straightening process-plus the other options that exist for us curly-haired girls who prefer to keep our hair on the straight and narrow.

      Thermal Reconditioning (aka Japanese Straightening)

What is it? This permanent process relies on a chemical that breaks down the protein bonds within hair, transforming its texture. After hair is saturated with the solution for a specific period of time, it's washed, dried and flat-ironed in teeny-tiny sections. This part is the most agonizing to sit through-you'll want to have a good book or stack of magazines handy, trust me. Post-ironing, a neutralizer is applied to "lock in" the hair's new shape.

What happens afterward? For 48 hours following your treatment, you cannot-under any circumstances-get your hair wet or even damp. No sweating, no washing, no romantic strolls in the rain. Bring an umbrella everywhere, even if

      1. Stave off the onset of "you look tired" (a.k.a. aging) with sunscreen and sunglasses. It's never too early to start, nor is it ever too late: The minute your skin is protected from the sun, it goes into repair mode, which it can't do as well when it's busy fending off UVA and UVB rays.

      2. Lines and crow's-feet are temporarily plumped and blurred with eye cream, which also helps concealer smooth on, making dark circles easier to minimize. Great creams are also packed with antiagers to combat puffiness, discoloration and lines long-term.

    • Dress like Malia Obama

photo credit: AFP/Getty Imagesphoto credit: AFP/Getty ImagesElena Fishman, Lucky magazine

Yesterday, First Daughter Malia Obama stepped out alongside her dad in one of the coolest coats we've seen recently. With its classic camel hue and black contrast sleeves, the topper's a perfect example of fuss-free color-blocking-and we love how Malia layered it with a casual hoodie, too. And while the stylish 14-year-old may have dressed down her outerwear with combat boots and skinny denim, we think the piece would look just as sharp over an office-appropriate black sheath or colorful pencil skirt.

See below to shop a few coats inspired by Malia's.
