    • 5 Reasons Moms Shouldn't Be Shy About Nursing in Public

By April Daniels Hussar, SELF magazine

Beyonce fed her baby! In public! This might not seem like earth-shattering news, but since the superstar was spotted breastfeeding 7-week-old Blue Ivy Carter at New York City restaurant Sant Ambroeus, she has generated praise from moms and experts alike.

"It's really important to normalize breastfeeding," says Jill Wodnick, M.A., breastfeeding educator and Community Doula Coordinator for the Hudson Perinatal Consortium in N.J., who believes that every woman should feel comfortable feeding her baby in public

When you have a newborn, it can feel like they're constantly hungry, and that's because they are! "A baby's digestive system is considered immature; a newborn baby's stomach is the size of a marble," says Wodnick. So, if you're taking your baby out of the house -- to a restaurant or wherever -- you're going to have to feed her at some point, because she digests the small amount of nourishment she can take in at a

    • Hand Sanitizers Vs. Hand Washing

      By Shannon R., SELF magazine

While this winter has been pretty mild and there is a spring-like feeling in the air, we are still in the midst of cold and flu season, so keeping your hands clean is as important as ever. Hand sanitizers are a hugely popular way to keep the germs away-- let's take a closer work at how they work.

      How do hand sanitizers work?
Hand sanitizers are very basic formulas with few ingredients. Most hand sanitizers are simply alcohol thickened to a gel with color and fragrance added to make them more appealing. This isn't the kind of alcohol you'd find in your local tavern however, it is ethanol or isopropanol. Some formulas contain moisturizing ingredients, which can help to slightly offset the drying effects of the alcohol. The rest of the ingredients, like vitamins and extracts, are used at very small amounts and don't do much of anything. The way that these products work is simple: you put them on your hands and most living bacteria are

    • 6 Grab-and-Go Breakfasts

      By Sarah-Jane Bedwell, SELF magazine

We all know that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. But knowing that doesn't prevent obstacles to eating breakfast (alarm didn't go off, bad hair day) from getting in the way on a regular basis. In a perfect world, we'd all have time to sit down each more and eat a leisurely, balanced breakfast but sometimes it's an accomplishment to just get out the door! That's why I thought it might be helpful to create a list of grab-and-go breakfasts that are easy, but also balanced. All these breakfasts follow an easy pattern to keep them nutritionally sound and filling: a serving of protein, a serving of whole grains, a serving of fruit/veggie, and a little fat. No cooking required! Keep this list handy (I printed it out and put it on my fridge) for mornings when you need to get out of the door quickly.

    • The Science Behind Magnetic Nail Polish

Courtesy of SephoraCourtesy of SephoraBy Shannon R., SELF magazine

Nail art is one of the hottest trends of 2011 and magnetic polish is the latest newcomer to join the polish party! I recently picked some up and did a little research to figure out what made magnetic polish work.

      What is magnetic nail polish?
Magnetic polish gives your nails a textured effect by using metallic particles in the polish that can be "activated" by a magnet that is included in the cap of the nail polish.

      How it works?
This is actually a pretty cool example of using simple science to create a really new innovation in nail care. The nail polish formula contains really small metal particles that are attracted to magnets. Remember elementary school when you had one magnet with a positive charge and one with a negative charge and they stuck together? Well, that is how this polish works! When you place the magnet over the wet nail polish (the polish must still be wet to work),

    • How to Pick the Best Body Wash for Your Skin Type

CN Digital StudioBy Shannon R., SELF magazine

Body washes are a great way to suds up and get clean but did you know that some body washes have additional benefits, too? There are two basic types of formulas, so lets take a look and see what body wash is best for your skin!

Shower Gels: These formulas are usually clear, brightly colored and labeled as either body wash or shower gel. They are actually very similar to shampoos. The main function of these body wash formulas is to clean, which means they are made of mostly water and detergent (sodium laureth sulfate is commonly used). Surfactants do a great job of removing oil and grime from hair and skin! However, surfactants can almost work too well (especially on skin), so companies usually add some conditioning ingredients to keep skin from drying out. Since body wash formulas are designed specifically for skin, detergent levels tend to be lower than shampoos. Also, body washes are a super fun way to play with different scents as they usually
