    • How To Get The Fall Flush

      February 26, 2011 3:31 pm

While we typically associate blush with Spring-when an onslaught of rosy pigments tend to hit shelves to help the pale masses ease their way out of winter and into the summer sun-the great cheek accentuator is making an uncharacteristic splash for Fall. As one of the trends we've noticed backstage this season, blush has come in a whole range of shades and, perhaps more interestingly, placements, providing an updated take on an age-old staple.

Most recently, models sported "a gorgeous rosy cheek" at Versace , where Pat McGrath finger blended Olay's Simply Ageless moisture-rich formula from the apples of models' cheeks toward their temples, only a day after making it the star product backstage at Prada . There, in accordance with Mrs. Prada's "innocent glamor" directive, McGrath placed the rosy pigment on cheeks, lids and lips for a uniform flush.

Before the fashion pack headed across the pond, rouge went rogue on countless occasions in New York,

In case you somehow missed it, what with all the fun-with-fonts prints, plastic charm necklaces, and sneakers with wedge heels (on the runway!), the theme at D&G for Fall was "street couture," according to Stefano Gabbana and Domenico Dolce's reigning makeup mistress, Pat McGrath. A requisite "graphic" eye followed suit, which McGrath drew onto models' upper lash lines in a thick stroke with a sixties flick at the outer corners using Dolce & Gabbana The Makeup Crayon Intense Eyeliner in #5 Black. To add depth and brightness, McGrath etched its Crayon Intense Eyeliner in #13 White along the inner rim of the lower lash line before turning to her trusty tube of mascara and her increasing, somewhat out-of-character reliance on brow pencils and powders (see Sui, Anna; Mendel, J.; and Prada for further evidence that the queen of the bleached brow may be changing her ways). Cheeks were lightly carved out with a soft swipe of blush along cheekbones, and lips

Rodarte's Kate and Laura Mulleavy have a thing for blondes. Their California gold rush collection for Spring necessitated a gaggle of tawny-haired catwalkers, and so, too, did their Days of Heaven-derived Fall offering . "She's a girl from the country," hairstylist Odile Gilbert said of the matte-textured manes she was coating with Aveda Air Control hair spray and its Phomollient Styling Foam mousse, which she worked into strands with her hands to get piece-y definition. "The spirit is a field of wheat," she continued of the mostly flaxen locks she was styling with side parts and "supernatural," sweeping half-up-half-downs, secured with a thin, loose braid and the occasional gilded fan-shaped hair clip designed by the Mulleavys. "It's a mess under control," Gilbert concluded of her handiwork. Discussing the "pastoral beauty" look, makeup artist James Kaliardos said, "It's the light at dawn and dusk"-those brief moments of the day that photographers

    • L.A.M.B. Backstage Preview: INOA Takes To The Runway

      February 17, 2011 12:49 pm

As anyone who watched the commercials during the Golden Globe Awards is well aware, Gwen Stefani recently signed on as the newest member of L'Oréal's celebrity spokesperson roster (they've got J. Lo and Beyoncé, too, for those of you counting). Stefani fronts ads for the beauty giant's Infallible Le Rouge lipstick collection, a good match considering her appreciation for a glossy, vibrant red pout. Her other beauty statement, of course, is the platinum blond 'do she's been dyeing since well before No Doubt lit up the garage rock scene back in the early nineties.

The songstress-turned-fashion designer clearly has a thing for hair dye. For her L.A.M.B. show tonight, Stefani requested that models get L'Oréal Professionnel INOA treatments courtesy of famed New York colorist Eva Scrivo. "Being a designer and a woman, Gwen saw the link between color and fabric and fashion," Scrivo told us last week when we sat in on an exclusive color session to prep

    • Sally Hershberger Takes A Blow To Her Ego

      February 1, 2011 3:44 pm

The blowdry-only salon is a genius idea: You walk in with unruly curls, sit down, and emerge an hour later looking like a Breck girl-it's sort of like drive-through fast food for hair. New York's Blow and L.A.'s Drybar pioneered the concept. Now famed celebrity stylist Sally Hershberger is getting into the game with her very own quick-fix outpost. Sally Hershberger Style Studio officially opens today at the Ciel Spa at the SLS Hotel in Beverly Hills. Unlike her mega salons in Manhattan and Los Angeles, the studio has but two options on the menu: blow-outs and chic updos. At $85 and $150, the prices are a far cry from the ones ringing up at her full-service locations, where a cut from SH herself goes for $800. Another bonus: The Style Studio is open until 9 p.m. seven days a week, should you require a last-minute, pre-event blow-out. Grammy and Oscars attendees, take note.

    • Fresh Debuts Brown Sugar, The Fragrance

      February 1, 2011 1:11 pm

Fans of Fresh's Brown Sugar Body Polish may want to sit down for this one. After line extensions that have included a Body Cream and a Hand Cream enhanced with the scrub's sweet and spicy scent, the brand has finally decided to give the people what they want: more brown sugar. The popular product range, which debuted way back in 1999, is getting its very own eau de parfum . Now you can spritz the Sicilian lemon, sugared magnolia, caramel, and cypress fragrance to your heart's content. For Brown Sugar novices, believe us when we tell you that, despite its name, the eau retains a certain effervescence that keeps it from being cloying. A brand-new candle and shower gel only help to further the Brown Sugar sensorial experience, allowing you to be enveloped by its aroma pretty much all day (the perfume's rollerball size should suffice for mid-afternoon touch-ups).

    • Sephora’s Salute To Skincare

What do you do when you have a lock on the makeup industry-not only stocking every big-name (and niche) brand at your black and white-tiled beauty emporiums, but hawking your own in-house line of face-painting products as well? You streamline your skincare collection, of course, which is exactly what Sephora has done this month with its new Sephora Collection . All 19 of the range's offerings-which are broken down into six categories, including Cleanse, Treat, Moisturize, Protect, Body, Makeup Removers, and Nail Care-are paraben-, sulfate-, and phthalate-free. They also feature an exclusive, plant-derived ingredient dubbed HydroSenn+ that functions like a supercharged version of hyaluronic acid to add moisture to the skin by forming a protective barrier on its surface and locking in water. After considerable combing through the line's extensive array of moisturizers and cleansers, we've picked out a few favorites to guide you in the selection process.

    • A Non-Surgical Boon To Age-Defying New Year’s Resolutions

What's the biggest breakthrough in cosmetic dermatology we can look forward to in the new year?

Non-surgical skin lifting and tightening using ultrasound technology, known as Ultherapy. Ultherapy allows doctors to visualize the layers of the skin and then deliver energy underneath the skin to tighten loose tissue. It provides a completely non-surgical option for lifting the jawline, cheeks, upper neck, and tired eyes-all without cutting, needles, or recovery time! Before this treatment, there was no way to reach these levels without facial plastic surgery. Since the results are typically not as dramatic as surgery, people with excessive loose skin are still advised to have a face-lift for the best results. But most patients do see significant results with Ultherapy in a single treatment, which usually starts at $1,500 per session depending on the number of areas that are treated. And the results last several years.

Elizabeth Tanzi, M.D., is a cosmetic dermatologist and

    • Natural Products for Dry Winter Skin

On a recent trip to Joshua Tree National Park for a hike among the yucca and jumbo rocks, I discovered just how much havoc desert conditions can wreak on your skin. My lips and hands were so dry and chapped after a few hours that I started to focus more on finding relief than taking in the splendors of nature. Nothing I had in my bag proved useful; my waxy lip balm and lightweight cream couldn't stand up to the arid air. Back in town, I did a little research and found a local remedy: Desert Sage Botanical Body Oil from the Body Deli , a purveyor of organic, food-based beauty goods based in nearby Palm Desert. The oil is loaded with extracts from the hardy white sage plant, which have been cold-pressed so that the molecules are small enough to absorb deeply into the skin and provide long-lasting hydration in seriously harsh surroundings-like, say, a similarly moisture-sucking radiator-heated New York City apartment. The body oil was a new discovery for me, but, in fact, it's part of

    • Dick Page and Shiseido Release a Limited-Edition Palette

As artistic director for Shiseido cosmetics, makeup artist Dick Page is no stranger to stellar product development. When the orange lip made its first big splash on the runway at the Fall 2009 shows (think: Karen Walker, Kinder Aggugini, Charles Anastase, Rag & Bone, and Zac Posen), Page released his Perfect Rouge Lipstick in Day Lily, which remains a go-to for crafting a tangerine pout nearly two years later. But oddly enough, the face painter has never released a complete set of his own products. Until now. With the holidays mandating specialized kits and compacts at the retail counter, Page's first limited-edition all-on-one palette with essentials for eyes, cheeks, lips, and face hits shelves this month and, no surprise, it's a real gem. The Essential Elegance Palette boasts universally flattering shades of pink and peach cream blush as well as a sheer red lip and cheek tint, but there are also some twists and turns-which are something of a Page signature (this is the man
