    • Two Mascaras, One Big Purpose

I've never met a mascara I didn't want to try, presumably because few other things feel so instantly transformative. I tend to collect these slim tubes, in fact, and seeing as how you're supposed to toss them every few months or so, stockpiling doesn't necessarily make you a hoarder-although there have been plenty of reasons to hoard of late. Two new mascaras lured me to Duane Reade recently: Revlon's Grow Luscious by Fabulash and L'Oréal Paris' Voluminous Million Lashes Mascara, both of which are designed with a common goal in mind-making your lashes bigger.

Grow Luscious boasts a bushy brush and a formula that is fortified with phytopeptides, wheat protein, and panthenol to condition, strengthen, and moisturize with every swipe. My lashes looked instantly longer when I first happened upon this green tube, as its pigment is extremely buildable but not too slick; it doesn't transfer to your lids during application. The huge brush is slightly cumbersome, though, an issue I didn't

    • Willow Smith: Beauty Icon?

We're not going to pretend to know why Willow Smith-daughter of Will and Jada-is turning up at a few of the bigger Milan shows with her frighteningly toned mother, but we can tell you that we have been intrigued and, yes, even a little impressed by her front-row beauty and fashion choices. The nine-year-old's most outlandish sartorial decision perhaps came on Saturday, in the form of a bold-shouldered snow leopard jacket that she wore to Ferragamo. But even that piece of exceptional outerwear came in a close third to two next-level hair looks that have really captivated our attention over the last 72 hours:

Exhibit A: Side-Swept With a Skunk Stripe at Emporio Armani

Having rocked the über-trendy side shave all summer long to support her brother Jayden's Karate Kid press junket, Willow is no stranger to experimenting with the asymmetrical 'do. At Emporio Armani, this meant adding frosted tips to a free-flowing coif that was brushed out and pulled to the side.

      Exhibit B:

    • MAC Lets Evil Reign Supreme

Since MAC fused its makeup know-how with the cuddly cute (and somehow psychedelic) world of Hello Kitty almost two years ago, their collaborative genius has yet to disappoint. The brand gave Liberty of London its first cosmetic cameo back in March, and a few short months later, MAC and Alice + Olivia's Stacey Bendet made sweet, neon yellow lip glosses and dark teal nail polishes together. Beginning today, the beauty giant unveils its latest launch, Venomous Villains, which came to fruition through a partnership with-wait for it-Disney. Rather than curate a collection around much-loved heroines, attention was turned to the bad guys-or the evil queens, as is most often the case. Eye shadows, Lipglasses, lipsticks, face powders, greasepaint sticks, and MAC's Penultimate Brow Marker (the better to draw those evil arches with, my dear) have been encased with compacts and tubes bearing illustrated cartoons of Snow White's wicked stepmother, The Princess and the Frog's voodoo king Dr.

    • A Seductive Chat With The New Guess Girl

When the name Guess? comes up in conversation, a few things immediately come to mind: First, the best high-waisted, curve-hugging, early-nineties jeans I've ever owned, immediately followed by a montage of nearly three decades' worth of sexed-up, black-and-white campaign images starring famous models like Naomi Campbell, Claudia Schiffer, Eva Herzigova and Laetitia Casta-not to mention the late, bodaciously blond Anna Nicole Smith. This month, California-born catwalker Alyssa Miller joins the Italian brand's illustrious spokesmodel roster, fronting ad images for its fashion and beauty arms, and starring as the lone face of its new fragrance, Seductive. The raven-haired Miller, who resembles the nineties supes that came before her insofar as she's been blessed with a glamazon body (and one serious set of brows), was lensed by photographer Vincent Peters in a sultry shoot intended to convey the black currant, orange flower, jasmine and Florentine iris root eau's coy femininity and,

    • Drugstore Discovery of The Week: Curél’s New Cure All

Ceramides-lipids that reinforce the skin's natural barrier and work like a shield to lock in moisture and keep out irritants-are a somewhat unsung hero when it comes to fighting eczema. (Eczema, for the non-afflicted, is an unfortunate itchy skin condition that can creep up on you for a variety of reasons, from a genetic predisposition to a stressful work environment.) But despite their skin-soothing power, ceramides are often are hard to come by-something Curél hopes to change. The popular drugstore brand recently revamped its entire skincare range with a ceramide complex that mimics the effect of natural moisturizers in the body. This ultra-soothing complex also stars in its newly released Sensitive Skin Remedy Lotion, which is designed to relieve irritation and strengthen skin so it's less susceptible to stressors of any nature (dry weather, three different smart phones for three different e-mail accounts, what have you). And for added protection, the lotion is enhanced with

    • Beyoncé Adds Skin Art To Her Growing Beauty Empire

Remember during NYFW when we were obsessed with the Temptu-created, Hope Gangloff-designed temporary tattoos backstage at Wayne? Well, while we were chatting up the skin artists backstage, they name-dropped a few high-profile fake-ink jobs they'd worked on in the past: De Niro in Cape Fear being one of them, and Beyoncé in those new sixties-pinup-girl-meets-futuristic-biker-chick House of Deréon ads-in which B sports a blond beehive and a host of chain-link tats-being the other. We should have put two and two together then, but our brain was clouded with thoughts of making it to the next show on time, whether or not our purple lipstick had smeared all over our face, and when, oh when, might there be time to grab a coffee, so somehow we missed the potential news byte. But with a clear, fully caffeinated head, we read the announcement today that House of Deréon and Temptu have teamed up to produce transfer sheets of the clothing company's signature fleur icon, rocker bolts and chains,

    • Boardwalk Empire, The Beauty Review

There were a number of reasons to be giddy with anticipation for Sunday night's premiere of HBO's latest miniseries, Boardwalk Empire. First, it's HBO, and the cable channel rarely disappoints. Second, the pilot was directed by Martin Scorsese, and, frankly, neither does he. Finally, it's set in the 1920's, which just so happens to be one of-if not the-richest decades from which to plunder beauty inspiration. Having already caught a sneak peek of a number of episodes (thanks, HBO PR department!), we're happy to report that the show does indeed hit a beauty high note. And that's thanks in large part to the efforts of lead makeup artist Michele Paris, whose résumé includes recent big-screen hits like Away We Go and Going the Distance. Paris, who is currently working on the new Will Arnett and Keri Russell TV comedy Running Wilde, took time away from her busy face-painting schedule to talk to us about Boardwalk Empire's flapper-era makeup, meeting Madonna, and how to differentiate between

    • Why You Should Keep Your Skin Cool for Fall

This column features weekly tips and advice from a revolving cast of industry leaders, on hand to discuss your beauty dilemmas, from blemishes to Botox.

Fall seems to have come early this year, and as temperatures drop, I'm wondering what you think is the most important skincare habit for keeping skin in good shape during the seasonal transition.

One thing I tell my patients is to keep their skin cool. Even though you might not be out in the sun as much, anything that raises your body temperature-be it spicy foods, hot showers, or drinking steamy beverages-can lead to inflammation and aggravate your skin. Unfortunately, this can cause problems like acne, wrinkles, and redness over time. My advice is to wash your face and body with lukewarm water and let piping hot coffee or tea sit for a few minutes before sipping it whenever possible. While you don't want to avoid exercising, working out does heat up the body for an extended period of time. I tell patients to run outside

    • The Barrette: It’s Ba-aaack

Not so long ago, we lived for barrettes. In seventh grade, it was plastic baby clips in the mold of ducks, birds, and other similarly infantile shapes, and then it was barrettes of the multicolored, mini-sized Goody variety, which have since been discontinued and which we buy in bulk should we happen upon them at an outdated pharmacy. So, you can understand why we're quite pleased to see the youthful hair accessory having a major moment for Spring. We've already mentioned the chunky plastic pieces Cynthia Rowley whipped up for her show last weekend and the plain silver metal bars hair stylist Odile Gilbert used to create a sleek, graphic silhouette at Prabal Gurung. And it just keeps getting better! Orlando Pita and his crack team of coif masters assembled barrettes covered in actual hair to hold and seamlessly blend into models' own tresses at Carolina Herrera last Monday, mimicking the silhouette of fluid, belted Korean robes. Then last week, Peter Gray strung up bejewled golden

    • Seven Days of Purple Lipstick

As previously mentioned on this blog (and every other beauty publication, be it digital or print) a strong, purple lip is a must-try for fall. Shades of deep eggplant and blackberry wowed at shows like Peter Som, Antonio Berardi, and Missoni back in February, causing a host of cosmetics companies to add the dramatic hue to their seasonal color offerings. There are so many bullets to sort through, in fact, I thought I'd take the liberty of test-driving seven choice selections during fashion week-a new lipstick every day-to help you better choose your perfect pigment and maybe even be crowned "that dark-haired girl with the purple lipstick"(fingers crossed!). Here, seven days of the great purple-lip experiment of 2010.
