      Do you take vitamins? For as long as many of us can remember, we’ve been told to take vitamins for maintaining optimal health. But new research suggests that not all supplements are the golden ticket we’ve been led to believe.     • Shine Tries It: Dr. Oz 2- day cleanse

      The juice cleanse craze has many wondering, does a juice cleanse really work? In this episode of Shine Tries It, Shine editor Sarah Weir road tests the Dr. Oz 2- day cleanse. Dr. Oz’s detox cleanse incorporates some food into the diet. The cleanse consists of three light meals a day, with green juice in between. For breakfast, Sarah ate cooked grains with an apple or pear. Lunch was a smoothie of fresh and frozen fruit. And for dinner, a vegetable soup. The diet does allow for some snacking; juice and raw veggies only. No food is permitted after 7pm. Sarah gives a critical assessment of the diet and shares her surprising results.

    • Foods to protect your skin from the sun

      Doctors say sunscreen is essential in protecting your skin from the sun’s harmful rays, but eating certain foods can also help shield your skin from the sun. Eating Well Magazine’s Kerri-Ann Jennings has a list of these super foods with anti-aging benefits. For example, strawberries are not only a refreshing summer fruit, but they’re loaded with vitamin-C, and research suggests that eating vitamin-C rich foods may help to ward off wrinkles and age-related dryness. Check out the list of these super foods on today’s episode of “The Shine”.

       





    • Shine tries it: the mermaid trend



      Breaking news: Mermaids are real. Kind of.

      Discovery Channel’s recent faux documentary “Mermaids: The Body Found” convinced viewers nationwide of evidence of the mythological creature.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                            
      The “Blair Witch” style special, (which aired on Discovery this past Sunday after its May debut on Animal Planet) used CGI technology to create false proof of bones of a human-fish hybrid. Soon enough the Internet was ablaze with speculation, and government officials from the National Ocean and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) were forced to release a statement disproving the images’ validity.

      "The belief in mermaids may have arisen at the very dawn of our species," a statement from NOAA reads. "But are mermaids real?
