A new trend is on the rise for expectant mothers…birth photography in the delivery room. No, we don’t mean dad with an iPhone snapping a picture when baby is born. We mean, a professional photographer, right inside the delivery room, capturing all the moments – sweat, tears, and all - of the birthing process.  Lori Richmond, editor of TheBump.com, says while this trend is not for everybody, it’s on the rise. “When you first hear about a birth photographer, I can see why some people might be skeptical. While it’s not mainstream, it’s definitely gaining in popularity.”

Why would you want a stranger in the delivery room, you might ask? Well, as Lori tells The Shine, “A Read More »from Professional photographers in the delivery room: Would you do it?

    • Peanut allergies on the rise

Peanut butter & jelly…once considered a lunchtime classic in school cafeterias everywhere, may soon be extinct! Some school districts are aiming to ban peanut products entirely to help protect kids with peanut allergies. And the reason may be justified. New research shows peanut allergies may have tripled over the last decade! The issue of banning nuts in schools has fueled a huge debate. When Shine covered this topic last week, the article generated thousands of comments, with many outraged and opposed to a school ban on peanuts. In fact, a big question that continued to resurface was: why are peanut allergies so prevalent today? So we took that question to “The Shine” to find out.

Dr. Clifford Bassett, a top allergy specialist at New York University Medical Center says no one really knows why nut allergies have risen so much. One theory is called a “hygiene hypothesis”. “Over-sanitizing the world the first couple of years of life and the immune system is not developing in a

    • What's buzzing on Shine

A ban on father-daughter dances creates huge controversy in one Rhode Island School district. Researchers find pacifiers may stunt emotional development in boys. And Shine viewers express outrage over Blake Lively’s engagement ring. Two million dollars! What??? Senior Editor, Piper Weiss, chats with The Shine’s Allison Fishman Task about what’s buzzing on Shine right now.

The Shine's Host Allison Fishman is wearing:
      Dress by Alice and Olivia
Ring and earrings by Ann Taylor
      Boots by Plenty Tracy Reese

A Rhode Island school district has banned father-daughter school dances after a single mom complained she was denied entrance to a dance. As Piper explains, the move by the school's superintendent was made in an effort to comply with the state gender discrimination law.  Some people are calling the ban too politically correct to be cancelling this tradition among parents and children. Many people are upset, saying,  “What’s next?” Shine viewers took the debate to

Did you know in some schools kids can't give hugs? How about a cupcake in class? Sorry, not allowed -- sweet treats are not healthy. • The fertility diet

For many women, getting pregnant can be a monumental challenge, but according to  women’s health and fertility expert Aimee Raupp, putting certain foods into your diet can actually increase your chances of conceiving. Raupp has extensively researched the link between foods and fertility, and in her new book, "Yes, You Can Get Pregnant" Aimee gives women a ‘fertility diet’ to follow. Things like protein, fat, and fruits and vegetable – which Aimee calls “The Three Big Yes’s” - are all essential to your diet if you’re trying to conceive.  Aimee walked us through her diet recommendations on “The Shine”.

In her latest film ("The Odd Life of Timothy Green") Jennifer Garner plays a mom faced with infertility.  Check out our interview with her about the scene that made her cry and why the making of the movie played a part in her decision to have another child.

    • Infertility and egg donor pitfalls

Egg donation has become a significant part of the fertility industry – there are over 100,000 IVF attempts a year and over 15,000 of them are through egg donation. The process of egg donation makes pregnancy possible for women who might not otherwise be able to get pregnant using their own eggs. But buyers beware: there are potential pitfalls.

Egg donations don’t often come cheap. Women's eggs can be bought and sold over the Internet and donors can charge whatever they want – the marketplace is anything but regulated. Simply put, there are no guarantees. Still, thousands are willing to jump into the
egg donor marketplace, because despite the risks, donor eggs have enabled many women to become mothers. Author of her award winning book “Grade A Baby Eggs” Victoria Hopewell (pen name) went through the egg
