    • Trend spotting – The peplum skirt appeal

Emma Stone color blocks in a red blouse and pink peplum skirt by Giambattista Valli

The peplum skirt trend can be traced all the way back to the 40s and has faded in and out of fashion for quite some time now. Usually attached to a sleek silhouette, the peplum skirt is a stylish contrast to a cinched waist and it plays off the shape of the hips beautifully.

Style tip: If you have a slender figure, you can get away with a dramatically flared peplum skirt, it'll give you the right amount of shape and curve without overwhelming your figure. If you are curvier or full-figured, you can still pull off this trend. Go with a more fitted peplum. This will allow you to show off your curves while emphasizing and accentuating a cinched waist.

      Test driving the trend

Test driving the trend - I guess I can't really say the peplum skirt is a trend in my wardrobe as I've had a couple of dresses and skirts in this style for quite some time. I've had the skirt above for about 3 yrs and it's served me well both in the summer and fall months. I think of it as a classic piece

    • Steal this look- Going casual with the polka dot trend

Kelly H asks: I've seen a lot of polka dots on the runways and in magazines. What's a chic way to wear this trend in real life without being too over the top?

W: I recently wrote about polka dot tights for fall and the polka dot trend in magazines and on the runway. The tights are a great way to try out this trend without investing too much. They're fun, light and whimsical and you can pair them with anything from dresses to skirts and trenches. Since dots come in different sizes, I would suggest going with smaller dots to start out. The dress below is a $15 find at Walmart (My theory is that you never know where you'll find a hidden gem). I love the one shoulder look because it allows you to show off just the right amount of skin and the layers and frills of the dress add to the fun and flirty feel that come with the polka dot print. I added a pop of color with a yellow bag and kept my shoes neutral so as not to take away from the print. Hope this helps!

    • Trend spotting - Summer gets a splash of yellow

Hilary Swank in yellow Tory Burch

Many would say yellow during the summer is a no brainer. The color itself is associated with so many positive things that the warm weather brings... the sun, lightness, fun, happiness and not to forget, the smiley face. So it comes as no surprise that this color has been a major staple this season. It's a very easy and uncomplicated color to wear and almost everyone can get away with wearing the right shade. Below are some favorite summer yellow looks that make us feel all bright and shiny...

Style Tip: Avoid looking like Big Bird by keeping things simple when it comes to this color. You can definitely take a risk and play with certain styles and get away with it but for most, we'd say - no frills, definitely no feathers and no complicated twists. Just a simple structured or streamlined look....well unless you're Rihanna (see below).

    • Look of the Day - Ginnifer Goodwin takes an edgy risk in Roksanda Ilincic

Ginnifer Goodwin takes a fashionable risk in a gorgeous lemon Roksanda Ilincic dress

Roksanda Ilincic is fast becoming one of Hollywood's hottest go-to designers for elegant as well as statement making pieces. The Serbian-born, London-based designer has dressed Hollywood and royalty alike - the Duchess of Cambridge Catherine Middleton landed in Los Angeles in one of her creations.

Above, Ginnifer Goodwin who's not new to experimenting with fashion sported a lemon Ilincic number at this year's comic con. Below is the original runway look from Ilincic's 2011 resort collection.

As much as I appreciate that Ms. Goodwin rarely goes for cookie cutter fashion, I have to say that I prefer the the original runway look. The hemline and bubble skirt work better on the original and would have been killer on the actress...she still gets an A for effort.

What do you think of Ginnifer's look?

    • Trend spotting - The "mini" revival (How short can you go?)

      Jennifer Lopez in Brose mini
Jennifer Lopez in Brose mini and Alexandre Birman python peep-toe pumps

Summer is always a time to show off some skin especially those gorgeous gams that you've spent months laboring for at the gym unless you're genetically blessed, in which case, trotting around in a pair of stilletos is all you need.

Speaking of stilletos in relation to the topic du jour, the higher those Louboutins and Choos seem to get, the shorter the hemlines seem to recede. Although many argue that the miniskirt may have existed as long as civilization has (recently unearthed ancient figurines dating between 5400-4700 B.C show women in mini skirts) ; Thanks to the 60s, a politically charged era of liberation, revolution and change, the mini resurfaced again at the fore front of the fashion movement.

The skirt has seen so many variations of length from the lady like, full skirt of the 50s to the mid length cut of the 70s and the super short hemlines of the 80s and 90s respectively.
