• Coconut oil

Joining the ranks of my favorite multi-tasking pantry dwellers is coconut oil ($9.99 for 15 oz. at vitaminshoppe.com). Lately, it seems I can't read a health or cooking article without coming across a new genius use for coconut oil and for good reason; coconut oil can do more than replace butter and vegetable oil in recipes. Save time and money by using these tips for coconut oil in these DIY beauty remedies.

Drugstore Beauty: 5 Simple Steps to Restore Your Hair

    1. DIY Body Scrub: Quit buying that expensive department store body scrub and make your own. Slough off dead skin by mixing coconut oil with sugar for a moisturizing body scrub that smells as good as it works.

    2. Make-Up Remover: It sounds crazy, but trust me, use a little bit of coconut oil on your fingers and dab it on your eyelid. Then, with a tissue or cotton round (I like Swisspers Cotton Rounds, $2.89 at drugstore.com), go back over the eyelid and voila! Everything from waterproof mascara to eyeshadow

  • As we transition our clothing from summer to fall, beauty experts say our makeup should change as well. And because Shine readers love to stay on top of the latest beauty ideas, The Shine’s enlisted the help of Erik Soto, Sephora PRO Lead Artist to reveal the top fall makeup trends. Starting with the eyes. Erik says purple, smokey eyes will be a fall favorite. “It’s like the new nudes, because purple goes with brown eyes, it makes them look lighter. And then with blue or green, it’s on the opposite side of the color wheels, so it’s very complimentary”. Another trend to expect this season; well-defined eyes. For this, Erik says you’ll need a black liner in either a liquid or a pencil. For a liquid liner, Erik recommends the Christian Dior Style Liner. A great pencil eyeliner? Erik likes the Givenchy Kohl Eye Liner, because it’s “soft” and “smudgeable”. As far as skin goes, this fall matte skin is in, and according to Erik you get it by using medium to full coverage foundation.

  • Silver Initial Pendant by Brilliant EarthHow much do your values agree with your jewelry? Yes, this is one big, serious question I pose. Think about it.

You might have seen my original tidbit on Brilliant Earth recently. Take my word for a brief moment; I have a valid point here, so please listen as I channel my inner Leonardo DiCaprio on social awareness. I want to show you directly how a necklace I am wearing doesn't look like what "crazed hippies" wear. In my first short piece, I sort of talked about it. I know how different it is actually showing everyone, "This is how it looks in pictures and away from their set." I have heard people downplay the diamond/mining industry's "conflict free" label as something "them liberals talk about." I am not kidding. Whether Republicans or Democrats - no matter! - we all need to be aware of how much nothing is what it seems when we go out shopping. Those jewels in NYC's Diamond District? Yes, the necklace you bought over the holidays? Where did that come from? You don't know? Ah,

  • Gluten Free Beauty products I bravely sampled (gulp)Jennifer Lopez, rumor has it, swears by Creme de La Mer all over her face and body. Good for her. When I used it, my skin burned off. I looked like a beet red Spongebob Squarepants for a whole week under my makeup. It gets worse. When makeup artists apply primers and skin lotions on me, my skin - which is like a teenager's skin but with the tendency to develop acne that dries out into scraped knee type blemishes - starts getting the "about to break out" feeling no more than four hours after the makeup is applied. I have tried expensive and cheap makeup products. I only use about four makeup brands at the moment - MAC, Chanel, Almay and an ever alternating Whole Foods brand in my purse - and for quite a while, nothing on my face. I couldn't take it. Everyone loved using the word "fabulous" in describing their miracle products. I always wound up looking anything but fabulous. My guy friends hated Proactive, Walgreens witch hazel brands, Neutrogena, the pore strips… What was I to do? I

  • There's a new girl making a splash in the world of high fashion and, for once, she's not a Kate Moss doppelganger or some Victoria's Secret angel type. Sure, this girl is gorgeous and statuesque, but she's also a plus-size model.

Since she started modeling 7 years ago, Robyn Lawley has covered French Elle and Vogue Italia but has now catapulted to the big leagues. The 23-year-old Australian plus-size model has just landed a mega contact with Ralph Lauren.

Before you poo poo this pronouncement, let's get something straight. No, Mr. Lauren is not collaborating with Lane Bryant or some other larger woman brand. Lawley is the legitmate new face (and body) of the luxe label and she can be seen in all her glory in their latest glossy print ads.

Why is this news? For one, she's only the second plus-sized model to ever land a contract with a traditionally non plus-sized brand

  • We stopped by backstage before the Tracy Reese Spring 2013 runway show and totally fell for the tousled bedhead 'dos. Inspired by Rihanna's half-shaved strands, TRESemmeé stylist Jeanie Syfu dreamed up a faux undercut effect for the lovely ladies walking down the designer's runway. Follow these quick and easy steps to recreate this 80s-inspired style!

#1: Enhance your natural texture with a blow dry lotion and power dry for a loose wavy finish. Once your hair is dry, lightly brush through your locks with a paddle brush to soften up the product.

#2: Create a deep side part (trend alert!) continuing diagonally back to the nape of the opposite side and clip to section away.

#3: Using a firm hold gel, create a tight cornrow braid with the lower section of your hair starting behind your ear and fasten with an elastic.

#4: Release the top section of hair and spray with a volumizing dry shampoo throughout for that awesome matte texture (double trend alert!).

  • Source: 3 Quick and Easy Steps For Filling in Too-Sparse Brows

Overwaxing and overtweezing has happened to the best of us, but with the right techniques, filling in too-sparse brows is a snap. To get tips on how to quickly and easily plump up and shape eyebrows for natural-looking results, just keep reading.

    • Grab an eyebrow pen or eyeliner in a shade lighter than your natural hair. The trick to brows that look gamine and not garish is to use a light touch while filling them in. Starting on the bottom portion of your brows, apply the color in short, quick, flicking motions, following the natural curve of your brow bone as a guide. MAC Eye Brows ($15) is an easy-to-handle filler that will give your brows a boost of confidence.
    • Next, fill in the thin spots along the inner part of your brow, keeping your strokes short and slight. Avoid applying color to the upper part of your brow, however: it may make them seem overemphasized and fake.
