Rooney Mania-a yen for skin the color of cream, and shiny, ink-black hair, preferably worn with short cropped bangs and a healthy dose of attitude-swept over the fall collections, with lookalikes popping up everywhere from Calvin Klein Collection and Antonio Berardi to Versace and Marni. The Oscars hit in the midst of the Milan collections, with Mara fanning the flames on the red carpet in white Givenchy Couture. Like the rest of the world, I had been enamored with the actress who played Stieg Larsson's menacingly alluring heroine-specifically, her hair. In the mood for change-I've worn the same shoulder-scraping cut for years-I decided to take a chance and really go for it. And when I say go for it, I mean with Danilo, the legendary hairstylist, and creator of Rooney's cut-on, and off-screen.

    Suds Up Safely
The cardinal post-coloring rule: "Wait at least two days to wash your hair," says Elizabeth Hiserodt, senior colorist at John Frieda at Serge Normant Salon in NYC. Washing right away can cause the cuticle (your hair's outermost layer) to lift, allowing the color to seep out.

To maintain the brightness of your Annie-like locks, Hiserodt recommends using a color-treated shampoo and conditioner when you do decide to suds up. "These formulas don't contain harsh sulfates, so they won't strip your strands of its gorgeous hue," she adds.

Colored mascara has always had pretty tacky associations. But the electric blue lashes at Stella McCartney's fall show last week in Paris were actually pretty gorgeous. "[Stella] said, 'I love when girls wear colored mascara,'" explained makeup artist Pat McGrath backstage. The striking purple-cobalt shade they came up with was fun and youthful and made the models' eyes look bigger and brighter than ever. Still, it's colored mascara-a look that takes some serious guts to pull off off the runway. A few tips from the pros:

  • sock bunsock bunIf you have medium-length or long hair, I have two words that are going to change your life: sock bun. I thought this was just something that a mom in my daughter's dance class had made up to get her little girl's hair into the best bun ever, but then I started hearing more and more murmurings about it. Soon, I realized that all of those celebrities I see with the perfectly coiffed dos I thought my thin hair could never hold really have a secret weapon -- a sock.

Just an ordinary, everyday sock -- and it makes all the difference in the world. Now, I've seen amazing techniques for beautiful buns before -- like this one Kate Middleton wore or this one that uses a faux hair clip -- but frankly, they overwhelm me, and I just go back to my boring ponytail. But there's no intimidation when it comes to socks, and you don't have to buy a single thing -- not even bobby pins. Just grab a sock from your drawer -- preferably one whose mate you've lost -- and get started.

  • fishtail braidfishtail braidBraided hair is so pretty -- and an easy style even if your hair isn't clean or it's a frizzy hair kind of day. And the fishtail braid (also known as herringbone braid) is a really pretty look. The problem is that it's harder to do than your standard braid ... or so I thought.

Farouk Systems Creative Artist Danielle Bucco-Regazzi shares with us the very simple steps on how to achieve the fishtail braid. It is the look actress Jennifer Lawrence will be wearing in the movie The Hunger Games, so we think it's going to be even more of a must-have style than it is now once it premieres.

  • Would You Go Gray?

When will you let your hair go naturally? When will you let your hair go naturally?Any woman who colors her hair knows that it often feels like a full-time job.

Whether you're adding highlights in your 20s or channeling your inner redhead in your 30s, the every-six-week appointments needed for hair color maintenance are a serious responsibility, and cost a pretty penny to boot.

MORE: The Best Hair Color for Your Skintone

Things get even trickier as your hair starts to gray-which happens sooner for some than others. Silver strands can take hold anywhere from our 20s to our 60s-and your chance of going gray increases 10-20 percent every decade after 30 years, according to the Library of Congress.

If you choose to continue coloring, you'll probably find that you have to hit the salon or the drugstore even more often to keep ahead of those grays.

While color is always an option, we love seeing women who embrace their naturally graying hair. It's a movement that's gained traction over that past few years, as more high profile women are embracing
