I come here for the fashion. In an open letter, a reader sounds off on what irks her about the Shine articles, and what she thinks readers like her would like to read.
Dear Shine,
I remember reading your fashion+beauty section every morning before breakfast and every evening after school. Back then, there were interesting articles, with cool and relevant stuff I was actually interested in. I gleaned so many helpful tips and tricks from reading these articles. I felt like a well rounded fashionista with enough practical knowledge to navigate online shopping successfully.
But Shine, you've changed! The articles have certainly gone downhill....it's been two years since Shine was truly at it's best in the fashion department, and I am finally going to say something about it.
Here are some things that irk me about the current system:
Everything is endorsed.
I get that the editors may be trying to monetize Shine by bringing in contributors from other magazines and websites, but it seems like this is affecting the

By Richárde | Fashion – Thu, May 10, 2012 5:09 PM EDTThe next time you happen upon Nikko Japanese Steakhouse, don't be surprised when you see an excited young guy enjoying himself, just returning from a tennis match. "I go there every trip when I come back to celebrate. I had my birthday there. It's a really nice place. I order the Nikko Special. It has a fillet, lobster and shrimp with double fried rice," Donald Young said during our interview this spring.

It hasn't all been a fun ride. 22-year old Young began playing tennis as a toddler and more seriously at 14, when he had to decide between baseball and the former as a career choice, though he encountered ups and downs on the ATP rollercoaster. "I've gone from top 100 to 40th in the world. It happens when you play on the tour one year and don't win any matches," he said, recollecting memories of his career so far.
"It's new territory. I am getting into a bunch of tournaments I was never in before. Hopefully, the Olympics later this year. The whole month of August, that's all

crochet swimsuitMy love affair with crochet doesn't have to end when it comes to bathing suits. And just because it has holes all over it doesn't mean it can be properly sewn into a swimsuit to give you the right amount of coverage and support, and a whole lot of style. And yes, you can even swim in them.
Behold the Robin Piccone 'Penelope' Crochet Overlay One-Piece Swimsuit ($130) from Nordstrom perfectly named after my daughter. So cute, don't you think? The one-piece (I think my daughter is too, of course). And sure, it's expensive, so if you aren't prepared to splurge, I found some more crochet swimsuits, including a bikini, at a fraction of the cost.

This Mossimo Women's Crochet One-Piece Swimdress ($29.99) from Target is adorable and I love the color plum. It's modest and still very flattering and feminine.

Also from Target is the Halterkini Swim Top (22.99) shown with Crochet Hipster Swim Bottom

Designers including Celine, Carven, Jil Sander Navy, and Yves Saint Laurent had a vertical fixation this season, showing pleated knee length skirts and button-down blouses that drew the eye up and down. Sharp, strong, and structured uniform fabrics formed the basis of these looks, with classic white shirting accented in neutral tones.
This trend's uniform inspiration makes it an obvious choice for your schoolday wardrobe. A pleated skirt cinched at the waist is one option-accent its youthfulness with a sturdy, wide-band belt like those shown at Celine. A shrunken blazer and button-up blouse will take the look into full academic mode, or try mixing things up with a denim shirt or patterned blouse.

sunglassesPeople always consider buying toilet paper, gummy bears, and mustard in bulk, but rarely do they consider purchasing one of summer's greatest necessities in large, bargain-priced quantities. Nope, not talking about relish (although I like where your head's at), I'm talking about sunglasses.

I'm of the belief that expensive sunglasses are for IDIOTS. I learned that lesson the hard way after I left hundreds of dollars worth of eye wear at the gym, at the pool, in the ocean, and on tops of cars that have been driven off. And if I'm being honest, I've also left 'em at a Popeyes or two. Pricey sunnies are not worth the money. Now, I solely buy cheap pairs and use 'em til I lose 'em. Even after all is said and done, I'll only have spent about $30 all summer, which is way better than $300.
So! To get the ball rolling, I've pulled 10 awesome pairs of shades under $20 that you should buy asap.

White House Black MarketIt's time once again for one of my summer style secrets that never gets old -- Behold, the versatility (and affordability) of the swimsuit cover-up!
Every year, I buy a few and end up wearing them all summer long, whether I'm headed for the beach or the supermarket. Swimsuit cover-ups often can do double duty as summer dresses or tunic tops over shorts. They're breezy and cool for summer and best of all, they keep you from having to suck in your stomach all day as you would in a tank top and shorts.

For example, check out this V-neck cover-up (White House Black Market, $39.99). It works poolside on its own, or you can wear it out and about over a cute pair of shorts or skinny capris.
Check out more of my favorite cover-ups of this season -- then tell me in the comments if your cover-ups do double duty.
