The Daily Green's senior editor, Dan Shapley, asked Roger Doiron, a 2009 Heart of Green Award winner and founder of Kitchen Gardeners International, some questions about gardening for beginners and gardening for politicians. Doiron and Kitchen Gardeners International were a big part of the movement that convinced Michelle Obama to plant that organic garden at the White House. So he knows a thing or two about not only gardening, but also politics and inspiration.
Meet all the 2009 Heart of Green winners
Here's what he had to say:
Michelle Obama planted the White House garden, as you and KGI had pushed for. What do you think the biggest successes have been to come out of that project?

The White House garden has been the backdrop for prime-time TV shows like the Biggest

Getty ImagesThe only difference between a brown and white egg is the color of the shell. Despite what you may have heard, one isn't healthier, more "natural," or more eco-friendly than the other. And there aren't any differences in nutritional quality, flavor, or cooking characteristics.
The color of the shell is merely a reflection of the breed of the hen. In general, but not always, hens with white feathers and earlobes lay white eggs and those with dark feathers and red earlobes lay brown eggs.

There's one difference between brown and white eggs that you may notice at the grocery store. Chicken breeds that produce brown eggs, such as the Rhode Island Red, are larger and cost more to feed than hens that produce white eggs. So brown eggs may be aRead More »from What’s the difference between brown eggs and white?

Way to change it up. Sweet red beets are a good substitute for tomatoes, since they're likely still in season locally and don't have far to ship.

According to a post on the technology blog TechCrunch, two companies have developed platforms that allow vendors--for example, Whole Foods (see above)--to add a storefront to their Faceboook page. Take BigCommerce, a company that builds eCommerce sites and today announced a new Facebook app called SocialShop. Companies can use SocialShop (at a monthly fee) to add a "shop" link to their Facebook fan page, then load in their eCommerce store's URL (the eCommerce store is also powered by BigCommerce). Then Facebook visitors can browse the company's products and share products with friends (viral spread!), but the transaction itself happens on company's eCommerce website.

I'm hijacking the beauty blog today to give a shout out to the awesome green initiative that Avon just launched, called Hello Green Tomorrow. Their plan is to restore South America's Atlantic Rainforest, which is already 93% gone (and will cause serious life-altering damage worldwide unless it's replanted - you can check out the full story here).
They've kicked off the program with a one million dollar donation that'll plant one million trees, and now it's our turn. Donate $1, and 1 more tree will be planted. It really couldn't be easier! Just click on hellogreentomorrow.com to give.
