I've come to terms with hearing my kids mimic certain iffy words they hear on the radio, but when my 8-year-old daughter asked me to download a few songs off iTunes for the first time, I was not prepared to deal with a song about oral sex. Yikes!

Here's how it started: Since this would be my daughter's first download, I wanted to be upbeat about the experience. Our family loves music, and I don't want to censor such an essential art form. I also knew I needed to quickly establish rules about how this music downloading process would work, so she and I would be on the same page.

So I told her she could choose three songs to download and that I needed to approve them first. The first was by Taylor Swift, whom I admire because she writes her own music and her songs are fairly innocent. The second was by Rihanna, who has a racy popular image, yet my daughter has zero knowledge of it.

Six weeks after sustaining a serious shrapnel wound and fearing that she had lost her mother in the horrific Boston Marathon bombings, Massachusetts teen Sydney Corcoran was crowned queen of her high school prom on Tuesday night.

I know they're not all girlie girls. Many of our girls march to their own drum, many have that cute tomboy thing going as well - and all define their own category, but it's always fun to notice the similarities in motherhood. As the mom of a hilariously witty, uber creative, sometimes tomboy, often girlie girl -- I thought I'd put this list together for all the other moms who live in a fog of glitter and have had their nails polished at a faux salon.

teethWhen you ask a mother how long she breastfed her child, you are generally relying on her memory. But scientists have discovered a way to tell the length of breastfeeding and they found their scientific solution with the assistance of the tooth fairy.

Manish Arora studies tooth chemistry at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York. He told NPR that, "you can almost visualize tooth development in terms of growth rings that you would see in a tree," says Arora. How? According to NPR, "like tree rings, the layers of enamel and dentin that accumulate day after day mark the passage of time. And the compounds in the enamel can tell scientists a lot about the tooth owner's early growth and development."

And in TV-land, I am a total sucker for old flames whose romances seem doomed to fail. In real life, the only reunions with old flames I've experienced have been friendly and a little awkward, so I'm pretty sure I learned this storyline from television.

Baby Sienna Grace was apparently in a big hurry to be born.
