1. Pick Your Method
There are probably two dozen ways to track your cash, but they're all versions of one of the following:

The manual method You jot down everything you spend, ideally as you spend it.

Go this route if... you love lists and you think you'll be consistent about whipping out a notebook every time you pay for something. You can also keep receipts and tally them later, but you'll be more accurate if you do it on the spot.

At the time of the Boston bombing, I was flipping through the channels on TV. Being that I am a total multi-tasker, I also had my laptop open and was switching between the two mediums. Around 10pm (PST), posts began to pop up on my Twitter and Facebook feeds with short messages saying things like, "OMG what's happening in Boston?" I immediately clicked on CNN and then MSNBC on my TV to see, but there was nothing new there, no "breaking news," nada.

I went back to my Twitter feed, plugged in the search "Boston," and a flow of tweets flooded in. Details, reports and many, many assumptions were being made about what was happening. Original Ad for 5 Boro Bike Tour

The organization Bike New York is pulling the signs that had been promoting its popular Five Boro Bike Tour in New York City. Installed on bus shelters and in subways and commuter trains, the ads picture a packed crowd at the starting line flanked by two dramatic pyrotechnic displays shooting flames skyward. The signs use a photograph of last year's event. They are being removed in response to the Boston Marathon bombing tragedy. They were deemed too reminiscent of the explosions detonated near the race's finish line.
