14 Secrets Your Hairstylist Won't Tell You

When you're sitting in the chair at the salon, and your stylist is listening to you gab away about your latest date, did you ever wonder what he or she is really thinking? Not to burst your bubble, but it's entirely possible that your stylist is debating how much interest she should take in your story based on how much you tipped on your last visit.

Stylists do love their customers, but they've also got bills to pay like the rest of us, which is why if you want the best service, it pays to be generous. Check out some more shocking secrets from the stylists below -- maybe it's time you learned to trim your hair at home?

The worst appointment times are …
Saturday mornings. Stylists vary a bit on this, but the general consensus is to avoid Saturdays (their busiest day), especially Saturday mornings. Fridays are also less than ideal, since it's the end of the week and your hairdresser is most likely tired and looking forward to the weekend (think of how focused you are on a Friday afternoon, makes sense, right?).
Other bad times: The first appointment of the day, since the stylist hasn't settled in yet and could also be a little late. The last appointment is also not the best since the stylist will be tired and ready to go home. Lunchtime can also be difficult, since stylists, like the rest of us, can get cranky when they're hungry.

If your hairdresser is promising the world …
Chances are they are not being totally honest. It's nearly impossible to exactly duplicate that photo of Jennifer Aniston you brought in (since everyone has different face shapes and hair textures), so if they're assuring you you'll be identical twins when the cut or color is done, be wary.
On the other hand, a good stylist will be honest about what they can realistically do and will work with you to find something that will be right for your face shape and hair type.

Get some celeb inspiration for your next hair cut here (of course, there's no guarantee you'll get the exact same results).

The WORST thing you can do is …
Be late. Not only does it show disrespect for the stylist's time, but also if you're late then you make her late for the rest of the day. If you want the best service, show up on time, especially if you're the last appointment of the day (our stylists say if you show up late for the last time slot of the day you can forget any special treatment).

Is your busy schedule making you stressed -- and late? Relax with these de-stressing recipes.

The BEST thing you can do is …
Tip well. If you want the best service (and a chance at scoring the ideal time slot or last-minute appointment), you'll need to tip well (20 percent is ideal). Stylists remember the customers who treat them well, and they'll go out of their way to do the same. Also, tip with cash whenever possible, credit card companies charge a fee for card tips, meaning the stylist actually gets less money than you intended.

See how much you should tip your hairstylist and all those other essential people in your life here.

$5 tip no matter how much I pay. Even if I have $15 for eyebrow wax, I give $5.

This is the dumbest thing I have read on Shine yet. Best times to avoid appointments- first thing in the morning, lunch, and the last appointment of the day? Any other times I should be wary of? How about mid-morning and afternoon?

This article basically says go into your appointment with low to no expectations, be grateful for the time you do get from the stylist, and don't forget the big tip.

I am lucky to have an amazing stylist and yes, I do tip very well. I worked for tips once and I appreciate her professionalism and I always love my hair when she's done. She gave me a quick trim to the back of my bob the other day when I stopped in for shampoo and conditioner. Was that because of my tipping? Maybe, maybe not. What matters is she does great hair, so I'll keep going back to her.

This is funny because my stylist always wants me to come in very early on Saturday mornings. She rarely schedules me at any other time or day of the week. Maybe the writer of this post shouldn't generalize this profession.

Oh, I forgot, she is often late starting with me, and other stylists that I've had over the years have been the same way also. I think that the respect thing cuts both ways. Clients have often busy lives too!

"This article basically says go into your appointment with low to no expectations, be grateful for the time you do get from the stylist, and don't forget the big tip." -right on Erin P.

This is rediculous - the sheer nature of this type of career warrants that a person work less conventional hours such as Saturday mornings, possibly late Fridays and during lunch hours so they are available when their clients, who have conventional schedules, can come in.

My stylist doesn't take appointments on Sundays and Mondays so that she still gets a 'weekend' - proper time management. One doesn't select this type of work with the expectation that their schedule would mimick an 8-5 M-F desk job.

Where is the part about the stylist hating and feeling inconvenienced about standing on their feet the entire time?

This is a very stupid article.

Wow! From the way you make it sound, it's never a good time to book an appointment!!! I don't know who your stylist is, but maybe you need to find a new one!

I'm very fortunate to have a great stylist who can always fit me in on a Friday afternoon. I have very high expectations, as does my stylist. And my hair always looks great!

You need to have a stylist who's very confident about her skills or she'll be afraid to do much of anything!!! And you'll be wearing the same old cut and color for the rest of your life! Honestly, I went to the same stylist for several years, and she'd always have an excuse for not giving me the cut that I wanted regardless of what it was. I finally got up the courage to go to another stylist who was highly recommended, and she gave me exactly what I wanted on my very first appointment with her! She started by telling me my facial shape is oval, my hair texture is fine and straight, but thick. I had taken a picture of Lisa Rinna with me in hopes she could give me that cut. And I left with exactly what I wanted, and super happy!

I've been with my stylist for eight years now, and wouldn't dream of going to anyone else.

    Nicole, you're the best!!!

Sure we are tired at the end of the day-but we professionals are ready to go for our 1st appt,3rd,or 5th!!We work hard to stay on schedule out of respect for our clients'time. Be prepared to hear that you forfeit your appt.if you are late. I would NEVER keep a client who is prompt waiting for someone who is late. That is rude and very bad for business.

i do LOVE how you talk for everyone. did you have a worldwide "stylist" meeting, or was it just the ones in your "grumpy salon owner's club"?

i'm so sorry, but i'm paying for a service. just because you're having a bad day or because it's the last appt or whatver DOES NOT give you the right to be a jerk. deal with it. (like everyone else has to)
