18 Backstage Beauty Tips You Can Steal!

After being backstage at Fashion Week, I learned something: models are not as pretty as you might think they are. Sure, they've got great bone structure and most are above average in the looks department, but if it weren't for the hair and makeup artists' magic you would not be all that impressed (no offense to any models out there).

So while you may think hair and makeup tricks from fashion week aren't useful, I heartily disagree. If these tips can take above-average models and transform them into bombshells, then they can at least turn us average Janes into something extra special. Check out a few of my favorites below, and click here for tons more.

Trick No. 1

Battling dark circles? Makeup artist Polly Osmond recommends using a full coverage concealer that has a bit of an orangey tone to make your eyes look alive again. She recommends Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage, $28, which contains two shades of concealer, one that matches your skin tone exactly and one that's slightly more orange.

Trick No. 2

If you want to create curls that are full of volume, hold your curling iron horizontally instead of vertically as you roll your hair up. It will help lift your roots to add more oomph. -- John Rudiant for Redken

Trick No. 3

To make your eyes look bigger and more open, apply three to four individual false lashes (try ModelCo Lash Out Individual Lashes & Glue, $16) to the middle of your top lash line. -- Gianpaolo Ceciliato, makeup artist

Trick No. 4

To make curls last longer, prep hair with mousse (try Nexxus Mousse Plus, $9.99) before blow drying. Mousse locks in curl without making it look or feel like you've applied a ton of product. -- Kevin Mancuso, hairstylist

Trick No. 5

If your skin is crepey or wrinkled, avoid putting shimmer on your cheekbones to add a glow to your skin -- it will only accentuate lines. Instead, dab your moisturizer on top of your foundation to get a youthful glow. -- Chantel Miller, MAC senior artist

I have such a mental block when I try to put on fake lashes (tip 3). Love the way they look, but thanks, I don't want to glue my top and bottom lids together (again). :)

Your comment holds some truth and also some "mistakenly painful assumptions". You see, (TRUTH HERE)I agree with you on the women should not wear make-up thing...all the time that is. Only because it is not as healthy as going au'naturale', even if you opt for a "healthier brand". There is nothing better for your skin then well, "nothing." I see nothing ( I must like that word tonight) wrong with a woman wanting to "enhance" her beauty or highlight a few features here and there. It makes us feel a bit more beautiful on the days we feel a bit down (for whatever that reason is), IE: PMS, Kids ran you down this week, showing yourself that "you still got it", a night out with the girls, whatever. Each woman's decision to wear make-up is just that... her choice.

Now to your "Mistakenly Painful assumptions" when you say that "I don't wear make-up and in return I met the most wonderfulest guy who actuals likes me for who I am." I really doubt it had anything to do with your make-up or lack there of. I firmly believe that your comment not only relayed a message of NO make-up = boyfriend to those you tried to teach "TRUE BEAUTY" too, but also portrayed a biased opinion about wearing make-up in general, and instead you just implied that because you don't wear make-up, it landed you a man. It was just YOUR TIME to meet "Mr. Right". I have a problem with women relating make-up to finding a man. You finding your boyfriend has nothing to do with the fact you wear or don't wear make-up, because in reality, men could care less if you do /don't. When a woman meets a man, do you think his first thought is " oh my, she is not/wearing make-up"? Absolutely not, unless he is a Gay make-up artist looking for his next project to beautify.

(and what a fantastic job some of them accomplish *wink*) When a man meets a woman, the truth is, yes they see physical first, we all do. There has to be some attraction there, but make-up is the last thing on their minds. Trust me =)

However one of our first thoughts might be... "I hope I look good enought to land this guy" "Is my lip gloss still on?" I hope my foundation didn't run" etc. I do believe that women wear make-up to feel better about theirselves, for a little pick-me-up, and because of societies reactions. You also said ..."People usually make fun of me for the way I look. But,my boyfriend will ignore what they say." The truth here is.... if your boyfriend didn't exist, what would YOU ignore? I think the big picture/problem here with your post is. Deep down inside your version of true beauty depends only on the fact that you "think" you found a man because of your lack of make-up. Wearing make-up does not mean you aren't beautiful without it, or even that you NEED it to feel confident about yourself, it's about having enough confidence in yourself to make the choice on whether you need it or not. There is a saying that beauty is in the eye of the beholder... there is only one true beholder "Yourself", and unfortuantly, we are our own worst critics. I hope that this post not only brings about some light to the horrible relation between men and make-up, but also reassures a few women out there that it is ok to wear make-up, and it is ok not too. Women weren't always so "free", so be thankful that you have a choice on "what's right for YOU".

I would love to learn to put make up on like the model's make up artist do for them. I have long eyelashes and I sometime's wear mascara to make them look fuller and add definition to them. I like Avon eye liner and I just use it on the bottom of the eye lids, as far as eye shadow I like soft hue's that match with my skin tone since I am dark, as far as lip stick I wear soft pink lip gloss or soft pale pink lip stick, sometime's I go bright red. It's not what other people think and or like I just like to use what I like on my self as foundation goes I like tan just to blend out blemishes. But over all I wear barely any make up every once in awhile if I am going out with my husband. But I am happy with going natural all the time since I just had a little 3 month old I barely take time to do make up trick's but I love reading all the tricks of the trade.
