4 Sneaky Ways to Stretch Your Beauty Dollars

Saving money is an absolute must right now, but that doesn’t mean the side effects have to show up on your face…or hair or skin. In the June issue we pumped experts for thrifty strategies that will keep you looking as gorgeous as ever (like how to make your highlights last, the trick to giving your mani-pedi staying power, and ways to max out your acne treatments). Well, just in case you missed that fabulous article, here are 4 super-sneaky tips to keep in mind the next time your stock up on the following beauty products:

1. Lipstick
Conserve product by coating only your lower lip. Press your mouth together to transfer color to the top. You’ll get twice as many applications from one tube.

2. Foundation
A moisturizing mousse formula (like Maybelline Dream Liquid Mousse, $10) smooths dry skin and goes on the most evenly so you can apply less overall.

3. Mascara
Go for a waterproof formula that won’t rub off or smudge (so you won’t need to redo). Screw on the cap tightly to prevent air from drying it out.

4. Body Wash
Buy a larger size (which will end up saving you a few bucks), and get a formula that lathers up easily (I’m obsessed with Dove Go Fresh Burst Body Wash, $6.69) so you only need a little.

Now it’s your turn to share your savvy money-saving secrets. If you’ve got a great tip for stretching your beauty dollars tell me in the comments!

I have been using drug store foundation instead of MAC, don't get me wrong I love my MAC, but I can't justify spending that much on makeup right now. I've been using the Maybelline line.

OMG! I LOVE St. Ives Whipped Silk body wash. It makes my skin sooooo soft and lathers up like none other. I think it's like 3 dollars for a pretty big bottle. Worth a try. That's all my daughter and I use.

I only buy the essentials, like lotion and shampoo. The other stuff I can stretch or go without.

I get dollar store makeup for the most part. I splurge on foundation, but things like eyeliner and eyeshadow and lipstick... our dollar store has the same colors that the bigger stores do. We use Dial bodywash, I think it's Honey and Almond. The Aloe Vera is also very good. It lathers up just great, and it's fine for the kids' sensitive skin. Plus, $2.50 for a pretty good sized bottle is a deal!

try to use multi-tasking products...like a tinted moisturizer with sunscreen in it or a bronzer that can double as eyeshadow. A handful of white sugar makes for a great and super cheap dermabrasion. Buy a less expensive shampoo to go with your conditioner. buy a gentle body wash, like Ivory, to use for yourself and your children.
