Tip #1: Belt Your Waist
We might be tempted to reach for a loose-fitting top or dress, aka maternity wear, when we’re feeling bloated. But that can actually make you look larger than you really are. Instead, cinch your waist to create the appearance of curves in all the right places. Any belt will do the trick, but we love metallic skinny belts positioned below the bust and above the belly for a trendy, tailored look.
Tip #2:
The diamond shapes in fishnets and argyle prints create a flattering optical illusion: They actually make legs appear more slender and toned! Lucky for us, textured tights abound this season and are an easy way to update any outfit. If you go for the netted look, opt for a pair with large cut-outs. The larger the diamonds are, the smaller the legs appear. The control top in most tights doesn’t hurt in creating a slim silhouette; just make sure you get a pair that won’t dig into your sides to create the unfortunate muffin top. And if you feel as if you need even more reinforcement, invest in a pair of body sculpting Spanx.
High waisted skirts make the legs look like they go on for days. Another upside: They conveniently smooth a lower-stomach pooch, no matter how many cookies you’ve sampled. Go for a pencil skirt for a timeless silhouette that is flattering on just about anyone.
Tip #4: Wear a V-Neck
The V-neck’s plunging neckline draws the eye down and in, creating the illusion of a slim waist. How low you go is up to you—even a slight “V” will accomplish the desired effect. Festive detailing around the neckline also helps to make you appear narrow.
Ever wonder why shoulder pads were so popular in the ‘80s? One reason is because broad shoulders make the waist look smaller! A tailored blazer accomplishes much the same effect, but is modern enough to remain on trend. And what could be easier than throwing on a crisp blazer or a military-style jacket!
