Are Celebrity Fragrances On the Way Out? Plus, What are Your Favorites?

To combat the tough economic times, Coty Inc. intends to “stick with what works,” according to Cosmetic News, which in this case means continuing to throw its weight behind celebrity fragrances. The company plans to roll out five star-backed scents this fall. On offer will be new installments of the Beckhams’ successful Signature men’s and women’s franchise, a second fragrance from Tim McGraw, and an olfactory debut from his wife, Faith Hill. The fifth new Coty launch, Kate Moss’ third fragrance, a fruity floriental called Vintage, will also roll out in September, although its global launch does not include the U.S., where Moss presumably doesn’t sell well at the mass level (she’s not exactly Wal-Mart material—which is a good thing). As for future collaborative efforts, Kylie Minogue has been encouraged to try her hand at men’s fragrances, which should be…interesting, to say the least. We’re legitimate fans of the original Britney perfume from Elizabeth Arden (it smells surprisingly good on the skin), so we definitely see the appeal of celebrity fragrances but wonder if perhaps it’s time to leave well enough alone? Thoughts on the trend and any personal favorites you’d like to call out?

I have found that most celebrity fragrances all smell the same. Oh, they start out with a distinctive scent but then turn to the same, generic smell that I can't wait to wash off. I think Britney's perfume smells of cotton candy. Too sweet for me. The only celebrity fragrance I like is Stella McCartney's original. It's perfect for cool crisp autumn days. Otherwise, I stick to my Estee Lauder Private Collection for summer and Burberry's , "The Beat" for winter. My perfume choices are seasonal for me.

Celebrities faces in front of a certain perfume counter actually scare me off. I think, "this perfume is going to be cheesy." What does a celebrity know anyways?

I love my Clinique Happy and my Estee Lauder Sensuous!

Indeed. I generally avoid the celebrity fragrances, particularly because I am not a fan of any of the celebrities who are putting them out. But who knows? Maybe I am missing some fabulous scent simply because I balk at seeing Britney or J-Lo or whoever attached to it. My one wish is that Victoria's Secret will put out the Essences de Voyage line that they had years ago. Best vanilla scents EVER and impossible to replace. Believe me, I have been trying to find a replacement for over 10 years. If they would re-release them I would stock up, even if they did it as Paris Hilton celebrity scents.

I have to admit, I do like the paris hilton fragrance. The one in the pink bottle with black pin stripes. Its nice during the summer. During the winter I stick with Fuel for Life by diesel or Seventy-seven by American Eagle. Another nice, non-celebrity fragrance for summertime is Ed Hardy.

Although I agree that most celebrity fragrances are not much to speak of, I happen to really like Jessica Simpson's Fancy. It has a nice sweet scent to it, more of a spring/summer scent rather than a winter one.. but I do like it.

I recently came across this great fragrance site, FragranceNet.com. It's a site to purchase fragrances, but their prices are so much better than retail prices, I was in shock when I saw their prices! Thought I would pass it along, to all you fragrance lovers. :o)
