Be a Picture-Perfect Bride (or Bridesmaid) with these Makeup Tips

If you're getting married, you have enough to stress about between the food, flowers and you're nagging future in-laws. That's why we wanted to share these tips for perfect wedding-day makeup, so at least there will be one item on your to-do list that doesn't raise your blood pressure when you think about it:

1. Whether you're doing your makeup yourself or hiring a makeup artist, remember to strike a balance between natural and photo-ready makeup. Keep these tips in mind to look your best in photos:
  • Use oil-blotting sheets to cut down on shine (don't want the flash bouncing off your forehead, right?). Have a bridesmaid carry them around so you all can touch up before photos.
  • Go light on the concealer, too much will look cakey in pictures.
  • Use a foundation that's a tiny bit darker than your natural skin tone (but be sure to blend well!), this will help you from looking too pale or washed out in pictures.

2. Although this is a special occasion, you still want to look like yourself (just the best possible version!). So if you don't normally wear red lipstick or tons of eyeliner, don't wear it on your wedding day. After all, you want to feel comfortable -- and you want the groom to be able to recognize you!

3. Always do a trial run (either with yourself or your makeup artist) before the big day. It'll help you figure out exactly what you want, and determine how much time it'll take to get your look.

4. Use primer. You'll want your makeup to last from the walk down the aisle to the final farewell and a good primer can help with that. Find the best one for you here.

5. Go waterproof! Odds are you'll shed a tear or two, which is fine as long as you don't have black streaks running down your face. Go easy on the eye makeup and be sure to use a waterproof mascara (our readers love these ones).

6. Don't forget your bridesmaids! You'll want these ladies to look their best too, so go over their looks for the day together. That way you can prevent any makeup disasters (like these.) Try having them show you celebrity makeup looks for you to pre-approve.

7. And speaking of bridesmaids, nominate one of them to carry around a makeup touch-up bag for the day. Include those oil-blotting sheets mentioned above (these ones are good), your lip color and blush for touch up, plus makeup remover and q-tips in case of smudges.

I am a professional make up artist and it amazes me how many brides...A) "don't have time for a consultation, B) Have no idea what they want to look like on their special day, and C) think they can get their make up professionally done for less than $50.00. Good luck with that. Inexpensive isn't always the route to go. People will pay thousands for a dress but complain about $125 to look flawless in their pics.

Bronzegoddess, can't u even try to understand if brides want their makeup done under $50? Yes a dress costs much more, cos its a dress for god's sake! Makeup should cost under $50, there is no way anyone should pay more than that, cos most of the less makeup brings out the best results!

I'll admit that $125 for makeup is a little high for my tastes, but I can certainly understand a professional charging far more than $50. Professional quality cosmetics are expensive, and that artist will be working on the bride for a while to apply everything needed for a flawless look. $100+ for professional, HD perfect makeup shouldn't be that shocking.

I'm honestly more surprised that brides wanting professional makeup wouldn't make time for a consultation (although "surprised" might be a bit of an overstatement--I don't have a lot of faith in people). You can't just walk in the morning of the wedding, hand the artist $20, let her slap any old stuff on your face, and come out looking great.

I say NO MAKE-UP! Don't put any on! You're supposed to be yourself and you don't need make-up to make you beautiful. I do not like make-up.

I was married 34 years ago & everyone did their own makeup back then. I look back at my photos and I'm so glad I chose subtle, natural, classic colors. There's no way you'll look back after that many years without the photos looking "dated", but I'm still very happy with how I looked and the "dated" effect is really the dress style. I used a low-shimmer grey eyeshadow which brought out the blue in my eyes + light foundation, gel blush, black mascara, lip gloss (NO ONE in their 20's wore lipstick back then). I would strongly, recommend that everyone have a "dress rehearsal" of makeup/hair/dress/veil, whether you're doing it yourself or having a professional do it. If, like BEAUTIFUL, you don't like makeup, I'd still recommend a light dusting of powder to prevent shine in the photos.

Great tips! I have to disagree a bit with #2 though. My cousin, who is a beautiful woman, doesn't wear much makeup in her everyday life as a school teacher. However, she had her makeup professionally done for her big day and it was absolutely beautiful. It wasn't "natural" like her every day look, but she still looked like herself...just a much more glammed up version of herself. I think it's ok to do something different for a special occasion, especially if you're letting a pro do your make up. There's nothing wrong with wanting to glam it up for your big day!

I agree that a pro is the way to go. I am a makeup artist and stylist and also wonder how many brides and those in the bridal party will spend $1,000s on a dress, shoes, and a cake and plan to do their own hair. I don't do trendy looks other than in rare occasions when a bride is really having a unique wedding and really wants it. Classic and beautiful is the way to go, depending on you, the location of the wedding and time of year etc. A beachy soft look is great for summer or outdoors, a red lip or more glam look is better for indoors and evenings typically. Find some hair and makeup looks you like to show the stylist-then go to the tryout appointment or before to the stylist to show them what you usually look like and how you normally wear your hair & makeup. With the ideas and pics plus what you normally do the artist can come up with a look that is still you only perfect for your special day. I advise the entire bridal party have hair and makeup professionally done to look uniform and be a lovely background to the bride. No one wants to look at their cousin's fushia eyeshadow in the wedding pics for the next 60 years. It's worth the money. Just like anything else. Covergirl, some hot rollers and your best friend ain't cutting it for your wedding I'am sorry.
