Can You Literally Sue Someone for Wearing Too Much Perfume?

You know that coworker. The one who bathes in perfume? Leaves behind a wall of scent you slam into on your way to the coffee machine? Well here's some retribution to anonymously post on her cube wall...

A Detroit city worker says her coworker's too-strong perfume makes it too difficult for her to breathe and do her job. So she's suing!

Hey, I support smelling nice. So much that I'm always consumer-testing new deodorants to see which ones really work (and don't). And while it can be easy to sort through all the new perfumes to find the right one for me (this quiz helped), I still have to remember, there's a fine line between smelling good... and just smelling.

So is there somebody at your office who's guilty? (Or is it you?) Should perfume be banned at work?

I hope she wins! I hate walking into an elevator and getting knocked back by a cloud of perfume or having to sit next to someone in a public place and getting a headache from their perfume. Be considerate with your fragrance people!

I think that's a little drastic but whatever..Some people do go a little to far but to sue them?? I say pull them to the side in a friendly tone and keep it real:)

I don't agree with that! Why can't she just talk to her to change the perfume she's wearing...she might listen to her.

I worked temp with a woman who showered in her perfume. I always knew when she was near. I asked her one day if she could wear a little less perfume as I was sneezing like a madwoman. She simply said, "No." I went home with a headache every day.

my husband tells this story how he use to work with these older women and once a month they would come in to work reeking of perfume but only once a month.

Why is it that older women tend to bathe in perfume? I use to work with a cranky old 80 year old that would bathe in "Shalimar" she thought she smelled so good (but really smelled like the perfume was as old as she was) what use to piss me off was younger people would tell her she smelled nice just to be polite and she'd add another layer I finally quit.

but... I currently work with a lady that does tend to layer it on a little thick but because her perfumes smell so good noone is bothered by the smell kinda makes the place smell better

I was taking a art class at night after work and when I entered the class one of the students approached me and told me she was allergic to fragrances and she could smell mine as I walked in the door. She mentioned she had told the class of her allergy so nobody would wear a scent. It was wierd because I had put it on in the morning, one spritz and it had worn off during the day and into the evening. Nobody else but she could smell it. I got scared and stayed on the other side of the room for fear she might come after me and have me kicked out of class, or sue me I wasn't sure and I felt paranoid. It wasn't easy because I was coming in from 8 hours of work!

I don't think there should be an actual law against it, but I do think that individual offices should be within their rights to make a policy that no one employee has the right to scent the entire office . . . for the sake of all.

I get migraines from strong fragrances so yes. The only fragrances I keep around are novelty scents like "hay" or "cigar box" & they only get used when I am entertaining guests. I got hosed down this weekend in Neiman Marcus' perfume department & was ready to vomit on the drive home.

Thank you so much for surfacing this issue!! People should use more discretion when they wear strong-smelling perfume. It absolutely bugs me when people - men or women - wear strong fragrances to nice restaurants. A lot of times I would start sneezing; and the worst is that the smell interferes with the nice smell of the food! I would hate to see that we need laws to govern manners.... Please be considerate!
