It would have been fashion ecstasy to watch Carla Bruni curtsy in some overly embellished, sexy Galliano number on her first jaunt to England as First Lady of France, but sadly, the model/singer-songwriter/former flame of Sir Mick Jagger chose not to indulge me.
Instead, Haute Schoolmarm was the order of the day. Bruni was snug as a bug in her gray, belted, knee-length Dior coat and gloves. (OK, so the coat was designed by Galliano, but it lacked the va va va voom I was craving.) Her hair was pulled half-up/half-down and capped with a tiny pillbox hat, which could have looked very Camelot-ere Jackie O but somehow ended up looking really austere.
But just before I wrote her look off as cold and stern, I saw her flats. How kind, I thought. Bruni, who typically towers over President Sarkozy, shelved her sex-bomb heels and let her husband stand tall for his moment.
