Cindy Crawford on why models of the ‘80s and ‘90s were better

This week my favorite supermodel of all time, Cindy Crawford, has been ranting about how she had to quit the business because she felt she was losing it and couldn't keep up with pretty younger models. This is obviously B.S., just like when she complained that she had cellulite. But then Crawford started to make sense when comparing the models of today to those of her time, and how she really couldn't make it in modeling nowadays.

"I would not have become a supermodel in 2009. I look too healthy," says Crawford. "A body like mine with big breasts, normal thighs and toned upper arms" is not the standard anymore, or what the industry is looking for. "That's why I like being in my 40s so much--being at peace with yourself, knowing about your strengths beyond being pretty."

As a teenager, my friends and I were always critical and dissatisfied with how we looked no matter what. Now in my 20s, everyone says you don't really come into your own as a woman until your 30s. Now that 40s are the new 30s, I actually feel sort of excited about aging. Cindy Crawford has always looked fantastic, but it looks like it's taken her a long time to really embrace her body, flaws and all.

Do you miss the curvier models of the '80s and '90s?

Yes, I think models from the 80s and 90s were some of the most beautiful women ever! Some of the newer models seem too thin and just strange looking to me. I don't like to judge by appearance, but that's sort of what modeling is all about. I think models reflect our society's standard of beauty. The one plus I see in today's industry is that there are more opportunities for women of different races and ethnicities.

The models of the past were bigger and bolder-- they strut their stuff, claimed space, didn't apologize for having boobs and were shaped like real women. You couldn't ignore or dismiss them

Today's models look like teenage boys. They're beyond skinny, look like children (and often are), don't smile or have any real presence. You can knock them over with a feather.

It makes me wonder why we as women don't boycott those promoting the look. Why do we keep buying the magazines and wearing the designers who not only do nothing to embrace what we are as women, but try to trivialize our very essence?

I agree with you The Mims....Im trying to raise my teenage daughter in a society that glamorizes females that aspire to look like little boys. We were made to have curves and some meat on our bones. Why the two extremes of gaunt or obese? Can we as a society find some happy middle ground?

I agree, The Mims!!! I don't buy magazines or popular clothes, because I think it's a joke, and those people that support that industry are sad and pathetic, and they need real things to worry about.

And occasionally I get drawn into ANTM shows - only because I'm disgusted and amazed. Those girls, without any make-up on, are h-o-m-e-l-y. No personality, until you add the make-up and tell them what expression to put on their face. YUCK.

Besides a few handful of models, the models of now you don't know by name. In the 80's and 90's we all knew Cindy, Naomi, Christy, Linda, Claudia and all the others.

The "super" models of today look like they've been clubbed upside the head - the same vacant, irritating expression seems to be on all of them. A woman should NOT look like she's fresh out of a concentration camp!

Yes, I could look at Claudia or Cindy and feel good about being a woman-- proud. I'm the same age as Cindy and I can still appreciate her as a woman. Now I see these silly 14 year old girls, thin as rails (whoever they are) and I just can't relate.

I wonder if the fashion industry is really run by misogynists

The 80's and 90's models were better! The ones today are skinny, ugly boys. I also think that the models today look more assymetrical *however you spell it* and not as pretty. They look more angular.

that is so true. Back then models had personality and looked you know, almost like an average sized woman and still looked beautiful. You can actually tell them apart. I browse through collections sometimes and all I see are pale zombies that look like when they sneeze they'll fall backwards. I can only truly recognize one modern model, chanel iman
