Creating a cool mom uniform: How to dress around spit-up, tantrums and trips to the little league field

Elisabeth, one of my oldest and dearest friends in the world (we were born on the same day, three blocks apart, went to the same high school, were college roommates, DJ'd a college radio show together, liked the same boys, fought like we were in a relationship, made up—you know one of those best friends), is now a full-time mom of two living in Philly. She sent me this request the other day, which I am trying to make good on:

"You know what I really want? A cool mother uniform that involves style and durability. One that I can have six of, in different colors and prints, and it's refreshing every time. This is my request for a post."

I've been wracking my brain over this. I want to find things for Elisabeth that are comfortable, but also make her feel stylish (while not being too trendy). The kinds of items that she can just throw on, but that are a step up from a hoodie and sneakers. And I don't want her to have to spend a billion dollars on these clothes.

In addition to the items pictured above (straight-leg jeans, a comfortable, summery peasant blouse, a soft cardigan, the perfect flats), here's what I think she needs (I am not sure I can fulfill the "refreshing" part—sorry Elis!):

1. A versatile mid-length skirt

This button front one from Boden ($68) is crisp
and preppy, but it also reminds me of something
French actress Charlotte Gainsbourg wore in
I'm Not There. The A-line cut is roomy and
flattering to wider hips and you could
wear this with lots of different types of tops
and comfortable summer shoes. It also comes
in a dark denim and various colored khakis.
Other options:
Gap, $23 (I like it light brown heather)
Banana Republic, $69 (comes in white, brown and blue)

2. Flattering, non-boring, non-belly-flab revealing tees

I personally like t-shirts extra-long, with a little
detail—if not they can feel boring. This one
from Alternative Apparel ($32) has a scoop neck
and great little flutter sleeves to cover up upper-arm
stuff. The company also sells tons of tighter options,
organic cotton shirts and tees with stripes.

3. A throw-it-on jersey dress that looks chic, but
feels as comfortable as a nightgown

There comes a point in the summer when all I want
to wear is dresses. And while I love my polyester vintage
styles, cotton jersey is really the ideal warm-weather fabric.
The only downfall to this long, airy American Apparel dress
($39, comes in 7 colors) is the criss-cross back. But listen,
if your bra straps are pretty enough you can let them show,
Carrie Bradshaw-style, or you could also layer a bright tank
underneath. If this whole situation makes you mad, you can
try the excellent styles at Old Navy.

4. Comfy/funky (maybe you'd call them ugly?) summer sandals

Even though they're weird, when I first came across the German orthopedic sandals Worishofer ($50) three years ago, I thought they were basically the
awesomest thing ever—and I bought three pair. Then, last year, they became
really, REALLY popular in New York and I felt like I should try to find another perfect
summer shoe. But you know what, who cares? These are the best sandals
I've ever had. They're a little old lady from the 50s, but in a fun way. You can
get them in a million colors and styles, they don't cost a ton, they really last
and they look great with almost anything (in a casual way, they're not like, the
best evening shoes).

here, here! This is a post I can relate to. The stylish mom uniform is so important because there is NO time to get ready in the morning...no time to think about an outfit. Please make the "cool mom uniform" a regular posting...for this section and parenting! thanks in advance!

I'm a mom and I dress pretty trendy and your ideas were great but the sandals gotta go, just a little to grandma for me. How about replacing them with a cute ballet slipper. Also if your children are five and older (younger children trend to grab at things) you might want to take a trip to your local fashion jewelry store and pick up some long neutral necklaces you can layer. They always update and outfit.

I'd like to see this be a regular feature too. I appreciate that the price points are reasonable, the items easy to purchase in most locales, the fabrics easy care, and the fashion sense accessible for most body types.

The tip vrs gave on updating with jewelry is so true. It's an inexpensive and easy way to take an outfit up a few notches and create a trademark look.

I'm always looking for comfortable, updated classics with a modern sensibility. I like the suggestions here, plus J.Jill and Eddie Bauer are favorite brands of mine.

sorry - the button down skirt is hideous. The sandals = my mom would wear them. Jersey dress was cute - just not in black.

Nice try for the cool mom clothes! But even at 51, I prefer more of a sophisticated look. The sandals and the button down skirt are matrony, something I am trying to avoid. I like to wear the same skirts younger women wear, except minis. Comfortable shoes don't have to be dumpy, there are plenty of cute shoes that you can actually walk in like wedges, ballet shoes, or flashy flip flops.

It's true once women have children, their bodies change forever. Since I started working out a little over a year ago and lost weight, I can wear fitted clothes. No more oversized clothes that hide my shape as in years past or the dumpy "mom jeans" that I thought was in style, but wasn't.

I agree with the others - that skirt would be better without the buttons down the front. A second longer skirt - perhaps broomstick - in a peasant print. Florals are big right now, and embroidered tone on tone anything. As for jewelry, much as I love long necklaces, a couple chunky bangles - one in clear Lucite and one pop of color - is really funky and fresh. And I never go anywhere without matching my dangle earrings to either the other jewelry or the outfit. A bright handbag in a woven material like bamboo or tencel, and if you really want comfort in sandals, Birki's are the way to go and come in all prices, colors, and many hot patent leather styles. Maybe I'm old school but you can't go wrong coordinating your accessories. And one more essential not mentioned - a great belt to change up the look.

I like the mom uniform except that I am a plus size mom and those clothes don't come any bigger than a large.
