Creepy News: Average Woman Has 500+ Chemicals on Her Body

I guess I shouldn't be that shocked, but it's still pretty weird to think that on an average day, we've got more than 500 chemicals hanging out on our bodies, according to this research.

Where does it all come from? Think about it. We step out of the shower (likely with some lingering body wash on us) and apply deodorant, body lotion, perfume, moisturizer, makeup and who knows what else. It all adds up pretty quickly. The study found that fragrance alone can add 400 chemicals to your body! (So if you're going to use it, better make it a good one, like one of these.)

Now, to be fair, the study didn't specify how many of these chemicals are actually harmful to us, but as this article shows, there are plenty of common ingredients in beauty products that can really do a number on our health.

What do you think of this study: is it an eye opener or a yawn? Will you do anything different in your beauty routine? Maybe try some homemade products? (I swear it's not as hard as it sounds, especially with these recipes.)

while some chemicals are harmful, this isn't really too shocking.

of these 500ish chemicals, most of them are just scents and things

are are most likely totally harmless to our health

That may be true, Jade, but I, personally, would still like to see more research into this kind of thing. And more options.

We probably consume these chemicals by eating all of the processed food too. I think its scarier to know that they are in our bodys than knowing that we are just applying the chemicals in lotions perfumes, makeup and what not. The only chemical that I would not recommend would be hairspray, especially AQUA NET , believe it or not women still use it

I only wear makeup 2-3 times a week. I avoid it and try to go to school with a natural face ALWAYS-including an SPF moisturizer. My friends I have at University always tell me I look different on the days I actually try to dress up (which is only on Fridays or when I have the occasional job interview, date, or having lunch with my best friends after class). Every other day I just shower and wear deodorant, my clothes smell nice, and I smell clean, that's all that matters when you spend your butt in the library/in between classes every day of the week. As far as other information, it sucks that thye don't provide exactly what chemicals are harmful for you. They should really do more research so women can tone it down or straight out stop using them. I spoke about the makeup part because a friend of mine (who is a makeup artist) and a biology major told me a large % of MAC makeup contained harmful ingredients and chemicals. [Whether or not this is true, I guess there's some way to believe makeup can be harmful, which is why I try to buy mineral and wear as little makeup as possible]

There is TONS more research out there if you look. Those chemicals are NOT safe and will have adverse health effects. Whatever you put on your skin is absorbed into your blood stream in 20 minutes - think of birth control or other medication patches - and, these ingredients do not get passed through your digestive system to be filtered, just straight to your blood. Don't be fooled by glossy ads! Chemicals are cheap and plentiful, that's why companies use them. They do not have strict regulations, if any, by the FDA.

I have posted some of it on my blog: http://seibella.tumblr.com.

Also look here: http://www.preventcancer.com/index.htm and http://mercola.com

California has started a new program: http://www.cdph.ca.gov/programs/cosmetics/Pages/New.aspx#listupdate

"Currently only 11 percent of the ingredients used in cosmetic products have been tested for safety!

Because the U.S. lacks a pre-market screening program, shampoo, deodorant, make-up, lotions and other products that consumers use every day contain chemicals linked to cancer, birth defects and other serious health problems. Major loopholes in federal law allow the $50 billion cosmetics industry to put chemicals into personal care products with no required testing, no monitoring of health effects and woefully inadequate labeling requirements.

The cosmetics industry claims that small amounts of toxic chemicals don’t matter. But toxic chemicals are in many of the personal care products used daily by women and families and these exposures add up. As much as 70 percent of what consumers put on their skin ends up inside their bodies—a huge concern for women of childbearing age. Finally, cosmetics are only one of many sources of daily toxic exposures." From the BreastCancerFund.Org

Not only should we watch out for chemicals, but also animal by-products. If your bottle does not say VEGAN, then it contains animal ingredients. Just google - "rendering plants and cosmetics".

I have read alot about the harmful chemicals in skin care products and have written several articles here on shine about it. I like homemade skin care recipes and make my own toners, facial masks, etc. Toners out of green tea, chamomille, etc., whatever my skin feel like it needs. They are inexpensive and work just as effective if not more than expensive store bought brands. You can read more about the effect of chemicals in skin care to your health at the Environmental Working Group or read some of my posts, also get some great recipes such as an oatmeal mask, toner recipes, etc. If you get a chance there are more skin care recipes at Complete Skin Care Therapy.com too. Oh yeah, homemade skin care is so eco-friendly!
