Dear Michelle Obama, maybe it’s time to give up the belts

    • Yesterday Michelle Obama wore a tweed J. Crew coat with awesome black patent boots and, sigh, yet another belt. Over a wool coat? Really?! This has got to stop.
    • February 18 - Obama taught us a clever fashion lesson with this patent belt--placing it high on her waist made her legs look a mile long and kept the otherwise conservative look fresh.
    • March 20 - This belted navy sweater dress is so chic it's almost too nice for gardening.
    • March 31 - While we love the golden Jason Wu dress, the Azzedine Alaia belt cheapens the look a bit, don't you think?
    • April 5 - We love black and white ensembles, but the large bow on her blouse is enough of an accessory without the Azzedine Alaia belt.
    • April 21 - The cool color palette comes together nicely with a belt.
    • April 23 - Know what a hectic argyle cardigan doesn't need? A studded belt laid across the middle. This Secai belt becomes one of Michelle's favorites.

Earlier this year, Michelle Obama developed a fashion trademark--wearing a belt. While this sounds fairly normal over a blouse or dress, the first lady often chose to cinch her cardigans and jackets, wearing the belt high on her waist over the garments. Sometimes the resulting outfits were creative and worked beautifully, other times yielded an awful fashion misstep.

As the year has gone by and seasons have changed, Obama was spotted yesterday wearing a thick rubber-looking belt over a winter coat, and we thought, "enough already!" Michelle, we know you love your belts, but perhaps it's time to retire them in the new year.

Check out some of the first lady's best and worst belted ensembles.

I do have to agree. I love her style but some of the outfits really don't need the belts.

Less belts - - then perhaps more of being referred to as "The First Lady". The Ft. Hood memorial service was the first time, in my opinion

that she actually looked like The First Lady, and NO BELT!!! Bravo to

    her dresser that day.

I am so with you on this one. I though a belt was to hold something up or keep something closed. They look horrible. I am seeing this more and more each day. Now Oprah is doing it and she looks about two feet tall and 4 feet wide.

It is an awful look even for the skinniest of women.

Calm down, Iamhome. She's not "attacking" the first lady. You honestly think she's writing an article about a bad choice of belts because Michelle Obama is black? Come on, get a reality check. And you're not reading The New York Times last time I checked, this is a fun, online blog/mag.

hmmmm I think I might have to agree with "Lamhome"-- or lets just say more research may be needed-- I really hope that isn't the case otherwise I need to know where do I sign....

PS. Everyone don't have the waist for the belts.

OMG relax people! It's an article about fashion. Now we Americans can't have our own opinions? The belts look terrible, and would looks terrible on a white woman, too. Give it a rest. Not everything is about race!

Perhaps the First Lady wears belts because they make her look slim. She has a small waist and large hips and apparently she is accentuating her positive attribute. Why must everything abou a public person be open for criticism??????

For the record, on her last post, it was about being sick of Lady Gaga so, no she doesn't attack only black women.
