Did you over-style your hair and makeup as a teenager?

Sixteen-year-old actress Taylor Momsen has been getting a lot of heat lately for wearing too much makeup and her stringy, dirty looking hair extensions. She started out as Dan Humphrey's innocent younger sister Jenny (Little J) on "Gossip Girl," but quickly morphed into a bad seed who disobeyed her father, moved away from home, dropped out of school, and took her clothes off for a photographer. Though Jenny has cleaned up her act a bit on the current season of "Gossip Girl," we can't help but notice that Momsen's life and style off camera has mirrored her transformation. As the singer for rock band Pretty Reckless, her clean cut look was ditched for a grungier one that includes loads of eye makeup and messy hair that looks like she just rolled out of bed. Yes she's only 16, but is this too much makeup? Especially for a celebrity?

Thinking back to my own teenage years, my friends all went overboard on the styling products. Lucky for me I missed the perm trend, but with natural curls, I had a strict regimen of blow drying my hair straight after evening showers. It took about an hour. I also clearly remember being in 7th grade and realizing that my best friends had started wearing makeup. Out of nowhere. Up until I was thirteen my little experience with makeup was selecting a new nailpolish or flavor of Lip Smacker, and borrowing and incorrectly applying my mom's blush for yearly dance recitals. I remember going with my pals to CVS on the weekends and spending our allowances on lipstick (I got a hideous color called Rum Raisin by L'Oreal, mascara (Maybelline's Great Lash since every article in Seventeen raved about it) and eyeshadow (a dark green shade by CoverGirl that I figured would bring out my green eyes--wrong!). Paired with my first pair of platform heels, I thought I looked like a hot, sophisticated 13-year-old, but to adults I'm sure I looked like an idiot. My parents weren't very strict and let me wear what I wanted, so I left the house in, what I would now consider, unattractive, maybe inappropriate makeup. I remember the episode of "The Cosby Show," where Vanessa sneaks out wearing makeup and Mrs. Huxtable adamantly forbids it, saying she's too young. Would I have been better off if my mother was the same way? In the end, I don't think dabbling in cosmetics at an early age changed me in any way whatsoever.

While we may not all want or allow our daughters to pile on the makeup like Taylor Momsen, perhaps we should cut her some slack and chalk this up to her inevitable experimental growing up phase. Did you wear lots of makeup and spend hours on your hair as a teenager? Were your parents strict about what you could wear at a certain age?

I had the wild man look in my teenage days, due to my physical activity and life style, I wanted something that would give me body and I could play up with not much effort with the mix of long hair. I have had short hair the few past years, but now it is long and fortunately due to hormonal changes as all go through when they progress through life, I have now have been blessed with natural waves!

Nope. If anything, I UNDERdid the makeup and hair. In high school, I was of the philosophy that everybody should like me just the way I am and that dressing up was way too much work for someone as brilliant as myself.

I showered at night so I could avoid getting up that extra twenty minutes early. I let my curly hair airdry as I slept. I washed my face and put on no makeup so that it took me less than five minutes to get from bed to breakfast. I let me mom pick out my clothes until I was in middle school. When she gave up on that, I chose outfits that centered around a favorite t-shirt, usually one that announced a play, film, or vacation spot I had been to. I matched my socks to my plain colored t-shirts. I hid my breasts in minimizer bras and behind sweatshirts and fleece vests.

I have grown up quite a bit since those days, but it wasn't until I turned 16 that I discovered makeup, nice clothes, and contact lenses. And I didn't start getting up in time to do my hair in the morning until I started working at the age of 24.

There is a huge difference among the females who wear little make-up versus those who wear a lot of make-up. By my own choice when it comes to make-up, I say the more natural looking the better....In this action by itself, I believe a person is portraying themselves as that no matter what your flaws may be with few enhancements through make-up, you are still confident in how you look, and not having to totally rely on piling on cosmetics in making you look better to the leading of making you feel better.

Oh yes growing up in the 80's was all about the big hair and the colorful makeup.

I would start my day at 5am (to be in my first period class by 8:15 and i only lived 15 minutes walking from the school).

everyday in went the hot rollers and intense makeup, and of course the clothes made the whole look come together.

Now 20+ years later I still do the makeup thing (less intense) but the hair... lets put it this way I wash it and run a comb through it

and thats it case close LOL!!!

OMG!! Rum Rasin was my first lipstick...LOL, I read somewhere that it would flatter a dark complexion that had yellow undertones...FAIL! LOL. Oh to be young again. But that girl does look like a w---- and I would never allow my daughter out of the house dressed the way she does. And I am very open when it comes to clothes.

No I was a hippy and make up was a no no. It was'nt till I hit my twenties that I went nuts with make up and hair. Now I wear very natural looking make up and hair. I guess things kind of go around in cycles

I'm in high school now. I hardly ever wear makeup, only on special occasions. But I always wanted to see how I would look in mascara and eyeliner but been to lazy lol. But there are ppl who go really overboard. I'm talking about one eye sparkly turqouise and another sparkly purple trying to match their shirts and shoes. They look like clowns!!!
