Dior Beauty's House DJ: What's music got to do with it?

Watch out Samantha Ronson—there's a new spinner on the scene: Harley Viera-Newton was recently named House DJ for Dior Beauty.

Why does a beauty brand need a DJ? Funny you should ask. I dialed Harley and got the scoop. Here's what we talked about:

Q. So how did this whole thing with Dior Beauty start?
A. I was DJing at the Beatrice Inn in New York and got approached by someone from the company who told me they were looking for someone to create playlists inspired by Dior Beauty's collections, and to host events.

Q. How do you create a playlist inspired by makeup? It sounds a little bizarre.
A. They send me colors for the upcoming season, and I assess its mood and pinpoint a vibe. Then I find songs that make me feel the same way. It actually makes a lot of sense.

Q. So what are your favorite fall products?
A. I've always been obsessed with DiorShow mascara and SkinFlash, but my new thing is DiorSkin Shimmer Star in Copper Diamond. It's got gold, bronze, and rose stripes and I use it as both a bronzer and an eyeshadow.

Q. And music. Your new favorites?
A. As for new stuff, I like Vampire Weekend and Beirut, but more than anything, I love Lissie Trullie, which is the band I'm actually in. I play bass and sing backup.

Q. What do you do with your hair and makeup at night when you're working?
A. My hair is always pretty natural, a long wavy mess. I love the cat eye look, so I do that or a really strong red lip, but never at the same time.
