Disturbing jewelry made out of human teeth and hair

Sterling silver teeth rings by Polly van der Glas

Sterling silver teeth rings by Polly van der Glas

It's rare that a piece of jewelry creeps us out, so we just had to share images of Polly van der Glas's new jewelry line. The Australian jewelry designer uses sterling silver in conjunction with real human hair and teeth to create rings, earrings, bracelets and necklaces. Per her website:

"Human teeth are locally donated and sterilised, and human hair is either locally donated or sourced from India and China. Teeth are particularly difficult to come by, so any donations are gratefully accepted."

Would you really want to wear someone else's tooth on your finger or around your finger or neck? It seems kind of morbid.

I would never, but wouldn't it be kind of neat to try this with your child's first tooth or something? :)

Not morbid, exactly, since the teeth are donated ... well maybe they are dontaed by the families of the deceased ... I don't know.

    Gross.

However, in the 19th century a lot of Europeans wore lockets with a piece of their beloved's hair in it, or a bracelet made of it. They considered it kind of romantic. Then again, they actually knew the person whose hair it was.

Cindy, I'm with you, maybe your child's first tooth might be okay, but some stranger's tooth is kind of weird. I like the human hair as jewelry. Different and cool.

Mysterious Gryphon is correct. The Victorians and Edwardians were extremely found of "hair jewellry" which was most commonly made from the hair of a deceased loved one. Also commone were "hair wreaths" which were elaborate wreaths woven out of hair and other fibers. My grandmother has a framed one that's three feet across and weights about fifty pounds!
