Do you have personal fashion rules?

On Monday night at the premiere of "The Soloist," Halle Berry hit the red carpet in a long striped dress and… flip-flops? Berry, 42, showed up in support of her pal Jamie Foxx, but was the only female star who wasn’t wearing stilettos.

As someone who loves heels but really hates wearing them for extended periods of time, I totally feel Halle’s desire to opt for flats. But on the red carpet, maybe some strappy leather sandals or ballet flats would be a little more appropriate. To me, flip-flops just scream, “I’m going to the beach,” not “I’m going to a fancy movie premiere.”

This got me thinking about my own personal fashion rules. One trend I’ve always hated is sweat suits. I don’t care if they’re expensive Juicy velour matching sets or Adidas tracksuits—if you’re not going to the gym, getting on a long flight or sitting around at home, I don’t want to see them. Same goes for pajamas or sweatpants when running errands. Throw on some jeans—or even comfy leggings and a tunic. If you’re going outside you need to get dressed.

Also, I become outraged when I see people wearing sandals with socks. Even strappy open-toed shoes with lacy ankle socks as seen in fashion spreads. I don’t get it and I don’t like it. If it’s warm enough to wear sandals what do you need socks for?

In New York City I see a lot of women stumbling home carrying their heels in their hands and walking bare foot. Ew, really?! I don’t even want to think about all the disgusting things that have been on these city streets—going barefoot is never OK.

I’m sure I could think of several other rules I have, but I’d like to throw it out to you Shine readers. What personal fashion rules do you abide by?

I was always taught by my grandmother, if you are leaving the house you get dressed. This means you do not wear PJ's, workout gear, or your dirty gardening clothes. It's a matter of self respect and respect for who you may see.

I also will not leave the house if I am not showered and clean. I even hate going to the gym if I already feel dirty.

However, I will admit I don't always wear makeup if I am not going to work, on a date or hitting the town. So when running errands, I am dressed and clean but makeup free.

During the week I usually dress up, on the weekends I dress down. In a small town where everyone is dressed down daily, i am the one who stands out with my trends and constant fashion. I think I was called bad names because I dress too "fancy." Whatever I put on I try to make an effort to be well put together. Sweats and hoodies are fine if you stay local.

Sandals and socks are awful. No sweats in public, pj's? Never... Jeans can go with anything, I do love my flip flops. I have about ten pair in all different colors but if I was at a premiere? Never, doesn't matter how long you have been a celebrity: to me you are still required to look good at buisness functions.

I have had Neuroma surgery on both of my feet and now suffer from continual and chronic pain. I can’t wear heels and most shoes cause me a lot of pain. The one shoe that feels pretty good are my Keen Newport’s. So, I wear them year round and in the winter, I wear socks with them so my toes don’t freeze to death. So, next time you see someone in shoes that are not “appropriate”, maybe they are doing it for a practical reason, like bad feet, not just a fashion reason.

I love, I mean love my flip-flops, but with a dress like that,

dont think so. Cute little sandals would have been a much better

choice. Stacey and Clinton would have a cow!!!!!! Just cause

you're famous doesnt mean you have any fashion sense.

I love my flip flops. Wear them all spring, summer, and fall. So, here are a couple of mine:

    1. If you toenail polish is chipping off or you have hair on your toes (ladies), don't wear flip flops.

    2. If you have to lay down to button your pants, don't weat them. And if you do, don't wear a tight little t-shirt.

My number one fashion rule: the shoes need to fit the occassion. It is never ok to wear athletic shoes unless you are working out. Athletic shoes (sneakers, tennis shoes)are the kiss of death for fashion!

I have had foot surgery so I'm sympathetic to those that need to wear comfortable shoes, but you cannot wear sneakers with everything.

I'm sure I could come up with a list a mile long, but here are a few:

    1. Wearing a nice outfit with a sweatshirt or track jacket over it. A lot of women at my work get cold easily so they put any ol' sweatshirt over their work clothes. I hate that! If you know that the office is cold, plan for it and bring a cardigan or suit jacket with you.

    2. I too am not a fan of the sweatsuit phenomena! If you have time to put on a sweatsuit than you have time to put on jeans and a cute tee and still be casual. My mother-in-law-to-be is retired and always wears tracksuits or sweatsuits regardless of the occasion (Christmas dinner, birthday parties, etc) Of course she has a full face of make-up and her hair done. She even had the audacity to ask me why I was so dressed up one day (we were at a birthday party, so I wore a spring dress and sandals). UGH!

    3. I usually limit myself to 2 accessories per outfit. Either a bracelet and long earrings, or a big ring and a necklace. If I wear a headband, then I won't wear long earrings, and a scarf (not a winter knitted one) counts as an accessory. Some women obviously don't practice this rule. It's almost as if they thought we were playing "Pretty, Pretty, Princess" again! They look like they emptied their jewelry box and put everything on. Trust me, more is not always better. You just look like you are trying to hard.

Ok I too could have a list that goes on forever, but I'll try to keep it short.

    1) If you have a revealing top on or a top that shows midriff or lots of cleavage, please keep it simple and classy below the waist... you don't want to look like your giving too much of the goods away for display...

    2) Acessories makes an outfit stand out. So even if you're just wearing bracelets and no earings or vice versa, remember that wearing some sort of accessory takes the outfit up a notch.

    3) Wear what fits!!!!!!!!!!!! Even if your a size two, if you squeezed into a zero, you'll tend to look bigger than you are.

    My fashion rules:

-I dont wear anything that makes me feel uncomfortable (where I have to be adjusting my top every 10 seconds)

-NEVER wear my lounge clothes out and about. Sweats are for the gym and lazy sundays.

    -I never leave without earrings.
