Does makeup actually make us beautiful?

There's a Belgian advertisement floating around the internet right now which depicts what seems like an average woman in a dowdy "before" and a glamorous "after" shot.
The makeover images are meant to sell eco-friendly cosmetics from a company called Biocorner--the ad's tagline reads: “No need to be ugly to save the planet.”

The woman looks better in picture 2, though that's really not saying much. The female in the before photo is all bag lady'd out, and the after one has been (obviously) heavily Photoshopped.

I actually usually love a good makeover, but this advertisement gave me pause. It suggests that we need makeup to be beautiful, and that, without it, we are hideously ugly trolls. Though most every woman in my life wears some kind of gloss or blush or shadow or liner, I like to think of this as just part of our personal choices and preferences, not a societal mandate. But when I really examine it, I realize  we see fewer and fewer "natural" women in this country and probably all over the world. I can't really remember the last time I witnessed a public figure (in entertainment or otherwise) who was not heavily dolled up. The youngest teenagers in movies now wear tons of crap on their faces, something I don't believe was prevalent when I was growing up. And even in the world of sports, our top girl athletes often become seriously coiffed beauty and fashion icons. It's weird.

So, here are my questions: Do you feel pretty without makeup?  Do you wear it every day? Do you think you should have to?

My answers:
Not totally
Almost
No

I think it all depends on the woman. I look pretty bad without makeup so I do wear it everyday. But I have sister in law who looks absolutely gorgeous without it, and on her face it just looks fake. It shouldn't be a societal requirement, but a choice.

depends on other factors - what is my hair doing? am I tan and well-rested?

Yes, but some days, just mascara and blush.

Yes - not because other people/ society makes me, but because I enjoy applying makeup and I like how I feel when I'm wearing it.

I hardly ever wear makeup. Mostly because I think I look silly with makeup on. Add in the fact that I have uber sensitive skin so it tends to just make my face go crazy afterwards. Plus, I don't know proper application, color for my complexion, etc. Sometimes when I see ads I think I should wear it more often. Then I realize that those people aren't that perfect even with makeup, it's all photoshop, so why bother.

I wear bronzer everyday and I love blush. I'm not into eyeliner, I can NEVER make it look decent. I believe that most celebrities in the public eye are looked as a commodity to their agents. If they go around looking half haggard, what is this selling? Unkeptness? Is this a tool that really "sells" in the market of marketing your best assests? I think women today have the option of looking their best whenever they want. Beauty sells just as sex does, if it ain't broke... don't fix it.

Look how many women are photoshopped all the time. In reality, lines around the eyes and mouth are fine because we witness it everyday but on film and in photo's? To many people touch the product before it goes on the shelf...

Do you feel pretty without makeup?

Not often. It really depends on my hair.

Do you wear it every day?

Never on weekdays. I don't have the time to put it on in the morning because I value sleep. I put makeup on maybe every other weekend, if I'm going out.

Do you think you should have to?

No, no, no, no, no, no, no. The only reason I enjoy wearing makeup is because I do feel prettier in it, but I've heard from quite a few guys now...that they prefer it when women don't wear it.

    1. yes, i feel pretty w/o makeup. i like that natural feeling.

    2. no, i only wear makeup mon-fri. on the weekends i wear none at all or

as little as possible (tinted sunscreen, mascara, blush).

    3. heck no! i think that women should do whatever they feel!

it took me a long time to go w/o makeup. when i was in college i even wore makeup to gym, gasp! when i graduated i started to hate the hassel of putting it on before going out. i learned to accept how i look w/o it. i like how i look w/o makeup. i feel like people are seeing the "real" me. if you can't deal with an occasional zit or uneven skin tone, than to hell with you! :) during the work week i like makeup because it makes me feel polished. it really sets the tone for the day.
