Drunk Internet Shopping: Um, do you have this problem?

Yesterday's Chicago Tribune had a funny (by funny, I mean terrifying) story on what they're calling BUI (Buying Under the Influence). The condition—which the Tribune describes as the "internet's dirty little secret," though I can think of far dirtier internet secrets—involves people (mostly women) getting real wasted, blacking out and going on online retail benders, typically blowing hundreds, sometimes thousands, of dollars on clothes and shoes and rings and crap. The weirdest thing was, most of them don't regret it. In fact, one woman referred to this kind of sloppy shopping as "the only thing you can do after a few drinks and not have any regrets." This is presumably because you can return most purchases. But what if you're a cheapo drunk shopper and you buy things on sale? Then you're just screwed? The terror.
Also: Is this a phenomenon I've missed? I mean, I did go through a ridiculous, late-night wasted infomercial period, but the resulting four easy payments of $9.99 for a food dehydrator were, as expected, easy. But not remembering buying an $850 ring? I hear a "Hi my name is...and I'm a..." in that. [Chicago Tribune]

I have a loved one with this problem, but I don't try to rehabilitate her because sometimes I inherit the things that don't fit and she's too busy/lazy to return. Everyone wins, really.

Sounds more like a manic episode to me. Or a combo of drinking, while in a manic condition. Pretty classic, women (and men) have done this type of 'bender shopping' for years, it's just the internet has made it frighteningly easy!

i do this! oh, you described me perfectly! i don't return my scores, mostly because they're things i've been lusting over that i'd never be able to justify while sober.

i should curtail my habit though. i have to keep it under the radar with my husband, which isn't always easy.

LOL I have done this once. My husband was out of town with work & I got a little tipsy & was bored to death & started shopping on line. It was a shock to him when package after package arrived to our house. (luckily I am & will forever be a bargin hunter...even when tipsy)

Um yes. Well, technically there was no black out. Just shopping under the influence: Sober, I would threaten, but never in a million years actually buy a new Juicy Couture track suit to replace my frayed old one. (WTF!?) What am I, a cast member of "Desperate Housewives?" Sheesh.
