Fall Is Here! Who's Chaninging Their Hair Color?

Before you go on and say anything...NO, I haven't gone lighter, (at least not yet -- the image on the left is an older one of me versus the more recent on the right.)

It's the beauty norm that when the Fall season starts to creep in, many ditch the Summer highlights and lighter hues for darker shades in an attempt to revert and restore our hair's condition from Summer's damage. Think of it as an instinctual hair-rehab of sorts, or pretty much a good ol' guilt trip that you end up with when you realize that most of your hair is now sitting in your bathroom sink.

Check out some of the latest Fall hair color trends as told by Hallie Bowman, celebrity stylist for Pantene:

“The days of striking, contrasting colors are gone this season,” explains Celebrity Stylist for Pantene, Hallie Bowman.  “This fall people will be going back to their roots, or at least making it look that way.  We’re going to see natural-looking tones to balance the more extreme hair styles that are going to be big, including mixed textures and nods to the 80s shapes.”

The Color Trends:

  • Blonde:  Platinum blonde is out and warmer, neutral tones are in.  If you’re blonde Bowman recommends shades of sable, vanilla or mink.  However, if you’re not ready to let go of your platinum locks, soften the look by adding some golden highlights.
  • Brunette:  Reddish or bluish browns are out and warmer browns are in.  Shades like deep chocolate and chestnut are going to be all-the-rage; it’s all about making your shade believable.
  • Redhead:  Two words – true red.  The key is to ask your stylist to stay away from blue and copper undertones, both of which reflect orange in the sunlight.  One way to avoid orange is to add some highlights to cool down the shade.
  • Black:  Stay away from blue undertones and go for ebony to keep the shade natural-looking.

I had this stint back in 2006 where I went lighter. I sported caramel, J.Lo honey-brown shade. I actually kept mine for a bit over a year. It was a love hate situation with me and that hair color. At first I was fascinated because as it was my first color job ever, I suddenly felt like a different person. I liked it so did everyone else around me. But, what I didn't like is that suddenly two to three weeks later after the color processing, I was already in need of serious touch-ups, and not to mention that I'm no color-at-home risk taker so maintenance was not only a major b---- for me, but it was a b---- for my schedule and my paycheck...oh yeah and of course, my hair too.

Because the color I had included reddish undertones, I dealt with brassiness after just two or three washes. What I didn't know then is that regular shampoos and conditioners are nowhere near suitable for color-treated hair. Instead you need a system specially designed to treat colored hair to preserve the color and richness longer, and maybe even extend the time between salon visits. Had I known something so simple like this, and that a great line of products such as Pantene Expressions could have been purchased at my local drugstore; then maybe I would have saved myself from a touch-up or two.

Either way, reverting back to a darker shade did "rehab" my hair, and I've grown-out all of the color-treated strands, so I'm left with virgin hair once again. So, I guess I'm already good-to-go as far as Fall hair trends are concerned. However, I do still get an itch to revert back or at least throw in some type of color, especially when seeing my friend Kitiya's hair of Mischo Beauty -- who has amazing all-natural hair color!

So what's your dig on changing your hair color with the seasons? Do you dig lighter shades in the warmer months versus in the colder ones, or do you just prefer not to put your hair through the Summer damage so that you're not paying for it in the Fall? Does your hue go up or down according to the temperature?

I tend to stay darker....I tried to do the at-home highlights - oy vey! Not a good idea, no matter how easy the box makes it sound. It's a nightmare. I'm still dealing with damaged ends from that fiasco, and it was over a year ago! I have more gray than I'd like to admit, but I'm vain enough to keep covering it (I'm barely in my 40's, for Pete's sake!) And my hairdresser, who is super brilliant, said to me the last time we colored (about three weeks ago) "Hmmmm....I'm going to have to use the permanent color on you next time." What!?!?!?! He's been using temporary on me for the last 5 or 6 months? Charging me an arm and a leg for it to boot? I'm still going to see him because he's brilliant, but I did think it was odd that my color needed to be touched up every 4 weeks.
