Fashion That Makes Us Sad: Grown women and the high, side ponytail
editor
All summer long—in addition to
rompers and tall, cage-like gladiator sandals—I've been pondering a questionable trend that seems to be everywhere: The high side ponytail. Now, don't get me wrong, I'm a huge fan of the ponytail, even the low, swept-to-the-side style. But this high, 80s-rollerskating version terrifies me, especially on anyone old enough to vote. In just the past week, I have seen SIX such looks. Three HSP's on teenagers, two on hipsters and, one on (ACCCK!) a 50-something lady. The problem with this hairstyle, at least for me, is it's completely infantilizing. So, on a grown-ass woman it looks like crazy-town, akin to Baby Jane's curls, a loopy old hippie lady's scrunchy-wrapped pigtails or when ravers were doing drugs and sucking on pacifiers. It's wrong. And, when there are so many awesome ways to wear your hair in the summer (low bun, high bun, braids-as-head-band, conventional back-of-head ponytail) why in the world would this be a top choice? In the middle of my HSP tirade the other day, a friend suggested this: "I think it's like non-medical botox, it's so tight that it pulls your face and smooths out your forehead wrinkles—maybe that's why they do it?" Hmmmm.

Well, the chick in this pic ain't lookin' too groovy. So anyone considering adopting the style should think about how they'd appear: sad & bad. Women have to realize that once you hit the pre-school years, it's time to abandon ship on this mess.

I'm with you all the way on this one. Particularly when worn with a big, bright scrunchie, as the side-of-the-head placement highlights the bigness and brightness of said scrunchie. Although the hipsters' adoption of this style is news to me. I'll be on the lookout.

I haven't seen anyone with that style lately, particularly not an adult. It would look like crap on anyone over 5!

Even on children, this is bad. It's been out of style since 1988. And any parent who'd do this to their child in this day and age...get help. Or glasses.

50-something woman? Eeeshhh... scary.
Gasping onto any little part of her youth, I guess.
Love the comment on scrunchies, too... ov vay, as they say.

ha! I have not seen anyone attempt this. A low, side-swept ponytail can be nice if done correctly and with the right outfit.
And just to clarify to the first poster, the chic in the pic is "Deb" from "Napoleon Dynamite". Her character is meant to look outdated.

i think a side pony THAT high is ridiculous. but actually the other day i was messing with my hair and put one about mid-lower ear and it looked pretty cute.
dont knock it till you try it, right?

This style was essential for the comedy of Napoleon Dynamite, but off the stage of entertainment, it definately looses its appeal.

I agree! this side ponytail thing has gotta stop because if see one more person with a side ponytail im just gonna lose it. i told my niece if i see it again im going to cut her hair off. to its very ghetto and childish for any one over the age of four to wear thier hair like that. i dont know which one is worse the side ponytail or throw-back jerseys on men over 25
