Five reasons to avoid gift cards this holiday season

If you're thinking about giving gift cards for the holidays, it may be worthwhile to look at the findings of a recent poll by Consumer Reports on holiday shopping. A couple of facts jumped off the page:

1) Most people don't want them: While 46 percent of people plan on buying gift cards, only 15 percent said they want to receive them as gifts.

2) A quarter of people haven't used the ones they got last December: During the 2008 holidays, about half of adults received a gift card, but one in four hadn't redeemed at least one of the cards as of last month.

3) They encourage overspending: Sixty-five percent of adults who received a gift card in 2008 typically spend more than the value of the card, up from 58 percent in 2007.

4) Store-specific cards may limit gift choices: Forty-one percent of those who have unused gift cards from last year said that they hadn't found anything they wanted to buy.

5) Many cards carry fees: Consumers may have to pay an upfront fee to purchase a card, but there are also monthly "inactivity" fees that can slash the value of the card if the recipient doesn't use it within a specific time frame.

This will be less of a concern next year when The Credit Card Act of 2009 goes into full effect. It prohibits gift cards issued by banks or retailers from expiring for five years; and bans inactivity fees for the first 12 months. Any fees must be fully disclosed. Here's a PDF of the entire Act -- the gift card provision is Section 401.

But the Act won't cover cards purchased this holiday season. So if you go ahead with a gift card gift, check out these two resources: A new guide from the Consumer Federation or America; and Bankrate's study on the best deals.

A final fact that blew my mind from the Consumer Reports study: Six percent of Americans--some 13.5 million consumers--continue to carry debt from last winter's holiday season. For those folks, it's time to stop shopping and switch to gifts that don't cost money. The blog Get Rich Slowly assembled a good list of low- and no-cost holiday gift ideas.

Are you a gift card giver? Do you like receiving them? Would love to hear your thoughts.

Ugh! this is the big struggle between my husband and I.. he always insists on getting gift cards because they are easy, where I would rather get an actual gift because they are more personal.. So I think I am going to work on getting real gifts this season, just because that's what I do. :D

Don't forget the chance of the store the gift card is to closing. Think Circuit City, Linens 'n Things, etc.

I get all the kids (tweens and teens) iTunes cards. I know for a fact they are getting used, since they all have or share iPods. My total shopping time? About 10 minutes depending on how long the line is.

I enjoy getting gift cards and occasionally give them as gifts, but I do have some rules I follow:

Is this card to a store the recipient actually visits?

It doesn't do you much good to get someone a gift card to Petsmart if they're allergic to animals and haven't expressed an urgent need to get a pet fish.

Is there actually a store close to where they live?

Yes they may have enjoyed shopping with you during their last visit but if there isn't a store close to them it'll be diffacult for them to use it.

Is there any chance that the store will go under soon?

While it's often hard to predict this one, it's pretty safe to assume that places like Wal-Mart, Barnes and Noble and Blockbuster aren't going anywhere, and if they do, we'll probably know about it first.

I like to get gift cards because there are usually things that I need that I don't think to ask for, or items that would be difficult for someone to purchase without me being there, such as clothes and some books.

It's better that the person receiving whatever gift they get from you learn to be a "gracious receiver" and be polite about letting you know about their preferences (like not telling you they would rather get something really out of your budget or something that is hard for you to get them). In this economy, people also need to learn to be less materialistic, and appreciate the gesture more, especially if you don't treat them badly in the gift-giving area yourself.

My sisters and I have been exchanging American Express Gift cards for years. We gave up trying to figure out each other's styles (and how to quietly return an item). I don't think AMEX or VISA gift cards have the problems listed above.

Whoa, Writers_block! You surprised me! You have some really good points here, all of them I personally use when considering gift cards as presents. BUT I was surprised to see someone as shopping-conscience as you seem to be put BLOCKBUSTER on that list of supposedly-safe stores. I'll tell you this much, Blockbuster IS going somewhere, fast. Shop Safely! : )

That aside, I use the gift cards I receive, and I appreciate them. I give them occasionally, but like to stick to more traditional gift-giving.

    Happy shopping all!

I love getting gift cards as long as they are not those cheap $5 ones that you can't buy anything with.
