Five Safe Ways to Get a Tan

I thought that at-home tanning beds are as outdated (and bizarre) as Michael Jackson's personal oxygen chamber.

Nuh-uh! The New Yorker reported that Sarah Palin has a second-hand tanning bed in her Juneau house, and the Indoor Tanning Association is cheering: They whipped up a press release commending Palin for not giving into "the fear campaign." (Read more about the Sarah Palin beauty rumors here.)

Well, they would say that, wouldn't they.

There is a direct link between UV light and skin cancer, and this has nothing to do with party politics, moose hunting, or Joe Sixpack.

Smarter choices? Self-tanner and bronzer. Here are some of my favorites:

Lancaster Self-Tan Fast-Dry Water Spray. This spray is quick-drying and moisturizing. I love it. $27

Neutrogena Sunless Tanner and Bronzer in One. This tinted foam is kind of fun and really easy to apply. Put it on in the a.m., and you'll be bronzed and gorgeous by lunchtime. $9.99

Jergens Natural Glow Daily Moisturizer. I'm always asking everyone which beauty products they couldn't live without. Of course, some of the ritzier gals name drop Dior, Chanel, along with this drugstore tanner. $7.33

Model Co Bronze Meringue Bronze Glow. This instant bronzer is pretty ambitious: It gradually self-tans, adds shimmer, and supposedly slims with cellulite-fighting ingredients. Hey, I'll take help wherever I can. $38

Lorac TANtalizer Body Bronzing Luminizer. If you can get past the pun, learn to love this sparkling bronzing gel. It looks good with short skirts and sleeveless tops. Note: Less is more. $30

Also try Loreal sublime glow! I like it better than neutrogena, few bucks more but smells like green tea and dries just as fast as others I've tried. It definately has more of a bronze look than orange and has little flecks of what I would normally call glitter, ( i despise glitter, gets everywhere) but doesn't look like glitter. Gives your skin a soft almost dewey look.

I'm with Melissa on the Loreal sublime glow - I like it better than the Jergens stuff because the Jergens makes me smell like a tanning salon all day (I hate that!). The shimmer in the Loreal one is great too, totally subtle!
