Have you ever worn something and returned it?

Some events or special occasions call for a particular garment or accessory you'd never typically wear or spend money on. But has it ever crossed your mind to leave the tag on, wear it, and later return it to the store for a full refund? It sounds like Courtney Love has attempted to do just that. (Why are we not surprised?) Last week, Love wore a long black gown to Elton John's 8th annual "An Enduring Vision" AIDS Foundation benefit. When a reporter noticed she had left the price tag on, Love nicely asked them to tear it off, but then hesitated. “Oh, no—what if I want to return it? No, no, I can’t. That’d be bad.” The reporter handed her the $7,800 price tag from Bergdorf Goodman and Courtney laughed.

This wear-and-return pattern might be the norm for Courtney Love. Though it sounds like an economical way to look fab on the red carpet without breaking the bank, perhaps Ms. Love should check out Rent the Runway.

Have have you ever done anything like this? I'll admit, I have left unworn items hanging in my closet for months and begged sales clerks to take them back without receipts or beyond their allotted 30 day return policy—actually, during this recession I think they've been more likely to do so. But wearing something and trying to get your money back seems really wrong. Not to mention unsanitary! Once I saw someone return panties to an unnamed retail chain and watched the clerk put them right back out on the sales floor. Isn't there a policy that you can't return bathing suits or underwear? Because that's just gross!

Have you ever worn and returned anything? Fess up, we won't tell! [NY Mag]

When I worked at a department store, women would retrun even gowns with deodorant stains on them..as if I was blind.

I think if you buy it, and wear it, and just don't like it afterwords there is nothing wrong with returning it. After working at a dept. store for over a year most of what people buy has been tried on by thousands before them, returned, and then put back out..so I don't see what the big deal is.

I thought it was you couldn't return swimsuits that didn't have that liner in it anymore... But anyway, no... I just feel like it's dishonest and stealing (but that's just my moral compass)... If it's something that I wouldn't typically buy, then I would still keep it because there maybe some time down the road where I may need it again. Besides, what happens if it gets ruined while you are wearing it?

Yeah of course I have. If I know I need a nice outfit for something and I know I will never wear it again I just tuck the tag in, wear it and return it. I do have a job and money but there is no point in paying $40 for a top I'll never wear again.

I think if you buy it and wear it out, but in the process realize you hate it, it's okay to return it. I mean, it's technically the same thing as trying it on, only it's for a longer period of time. I don't do it, but whatever.

Besides, you're supposed to wash things you buy before you wear them so I don't really see the unsanitary part. I think it's nasty not to wash things you buy before you wear them... so many people have tried them on in the store.

If you're just buying it to wear it to one thing and returning it because you don't want to spend the money, then that just stinks. Only return it if you don't like it.

I can't believe a dress costing $7800 would have a price tagged attached. How tacky.

When I buy an outfit for a special occasion, I keep it. Eventually, something will come up and I can wear it again.

I know this is a bit different but we bought a cot from a store, used it for camping, it was for our son and we put a sheet over it, He used it for two nights and then I returned it and got my money back. We didn't want to keep it, just borrow it for a few nights. :)

I worked in retail for 20 years. Buying something, using or wearing it and returning it is stealing. Period.

You aren't sneaking it past the people at the store. We know how tacky you are, we are just too polite to call you on it.

I saw a customer (or a "renter" as we called her) outside of the store at the movie theater. She came up to me, started a conversation with me, showed me the outfit she had on was the one I sold her a few days before, and said goodnight. Two days later, she came into the store to return the outfit. Pretty ballsy, huh?

Before you say "who is it hurting? It isn't your money so who cares?" I want you to know that as a store manager it WAS my money. I got raises, bonuses, etc based on how profitable my store was. Returning items to a store that cannot be resold diminishes their profits. Spending time helping customers who will ultimately return the items is a waste of productivity. Man-hours would be better spent helping customers who intend to keep their purchases. We had to spend time assisting these customers on the sales floor, in the fitting room, at the cash register, etc. Typically, customers like this demand attention and lots of it. This eats away at the time I could spend with other customers. And no, company policy dictated that I could NOT turn away her business, nor could I refuse her returns. So she (and several others like her) continued to eat away at the bottom line.

last time i did it was a white garter belt that i used for halloween night. I kept the tags on and returned it for my $19 back.

Other times it's usually books and things like that.

Bought it without trying it on, assuming it may fit, took it home, tried it on, did not fit, returned. As far as wearing for several hours, then returning it? No never done this.
